Correction in the video: ELDEN RING does not run on any version of Unreal Engine, I was mistaken as it runs on the proprietary "Sekiro" engine. Irregardless on launch it also suffered from shader compilation issues. Still does as far as my recent experience on my system. @@CursedInEternity92 Agreed. Pretty much every action game has dodging and now horror. Resident Evil 2 remake was amazing because of lack of movement. Sometimes having tank controls or a protagonist that can't fight well allows for more tension thus better horror. Can even say that for dead space, where Isaac is terrible at melee and needs to use all of his weapons/tools to keep them away. Calisto really just lacks depth in the combat and it saddens me. Like they could've pulled melee from hack and slashes such as Mordhau or Chivalry allowing cutting of limbs precisely or more melee weapon variety, but no they do the most generic triple A melee combat with 1 weapon.

Something cool is that Valve can ship precompiled shaders for Steam Deck, because they know the hardware. That's why Elden Ring apparently performed better at launch on the Deck. It'd be interesting to see if this applies to more games, and if so, that's another reason for people to buy the Deck and devs to focus on the Deck as they can tailor the game better to a predictable sets of hardware.

  • @huntercz1226

I would like Valve bring Fossilize to every platform and API so shaders then can be collected from players, and then others can download them automatically and be replayed for their hardware. This feature currently works only for Linux and it works really great for DX12 games using vkd3d-proton (unfortunately it doesn't work well for DX11 because Steam doesn't collect DXVK state caches).

This is not even a survival horror game. Every survival horror element is superficial only. For example, an inventory system with no resource management. Survival horror games also by necessity need to have environmental puzzles and backtracking/location permanence, otherwise they do not qualify for the tag. Developers and players alike misuse the term ALL THE TIME. Just because a game is HORROR THEMED does not make it SURVIVAL HORROR, which is its own genre with specific design conventions. I die inside every time someone calls a third person corridor shooter or a walking simulator (Outlast etc) "survival horror". Stop please.

This reminds me of the whole B4B debacle. "It's made by the same devs that made L4D so it must be the best thing ever, it's going to rescue the genre from the evil grasp of greedy AAA publishers that destroyed it!" 😵‍💫 edit - just want to clarify I'm aware that Turtle Rock "exaggerated" shall we say, about being the L4D dev. This is more of a comment on the way we gamers tend to glorify the "exploited visionaries breaking the shackles of the AAA industry to start their own indie studio and lead us all to gaming paradise" narrative and overlook their flaws and underplay the AAA resources that made the original possible. When we say "this AAA company RUINED this and that" we need to keep in mind that the same company helped made it great in the first place. Not trying to defend EA and co, just putting things in perspective.

I find it interesting that Muta didn't mention this, but on linux if you play with proton it'll actually pre-compile any vulkan shaders for a game you're booting up for the first time or after an update before it even launches, so I personally never experience the stuttering he's talking about. However this only works with games that are either using Vulkan or using DirectX via DXVK. OpenGL games may have issues still.

This is VERY interesting. Star Ocean: The Divine Force also runs on UE4 and it actually DOES compile the shaders ahead of time! It takes 20-45 minutes and people were throwing a FIT over it especially as it counts towards playtime (and thus returnability) and it actually doesn't exactly work right as AFTER you boot the game you need to compile shaders a second time through the Options menu (this takes less time than the first time). But due to a bug, some graphics cards would actually take more than 2 hours to pre-compile shaders (this was fixed in a driver update). If everything goes right it should be smooth after that as long as you don't Alt-Tab away from the window but yeah microstutters were an issue even on console. Meanwhile, that new Gotham Knights game ALSO has shader compilation issues, same UE4 engine, even on consoles. Honestly I've been seeing a lot of shader compilation issues these past few months which is very weird and makes me appreciate the Gamecube even more (GC compiles shaders on the fly in ways PCs can't which is why GC emulation frequently had stutters and hiccups and someone had to develop a crazy workaround for it). Gee it almost feels like the entire industry all using the same 5 engines is a bad thing. (Yes I understand engine development is very expensive and time consuming, I'm just being a grumpy older gamer who finds modern gaming frustrating and unsustainable and feels completely alienated from his own hobby)

It's also important to note that ray tracing may incur a hefty CPU performance burden because of the BHV structure required to perform ray tracing. Of course there is some variation in how CPU demanding ray tracing for a specific game will be. All I can say is that you should not neglect CPU upgrades when upgrading your PC for the future.

Dead space is a masterclass in suspense, tone, and scene setting. But it wasn’t an overwhelming amount of enemies. There wasn’t a lot of heavy combat in the game. But the way they had enemies coming at your from walls, ceilings, and below put you in a constant state of fear that enemies would come from anywhere, without even having enemies always Appear. This of course leads you in a state of content after a few minutes. I remember going minutes without encountering enemies, but I still checked every corner, walked slow, kept me ears open, and aimed my light everywhere. I think the scariest part I remember was dead space 1, walking through a nursery, and something like and alarm clock went off. I wish more developers could dress a scene and immerse us as well. Definitely remains on of the best gaming experiences of my life.

I think I have to agree. I was playing on xbox (someone gifted it to me) and in a universe where this does not have a PC launch. I would say it is a 7 for me. The story and universe is fun; the atmosphere is immersive. It reminds me of Dead Space and Alien Isolation in one and that is what this game could have been. But this is coming from console. I have only seen and heard negatives on PC but not much input from the console community :c

Dead space had side quests enough to look at that you could spend 20 hours on a single playthrough run I remember the third one had so many side quests that I couldn't even do them all I was too chicken s*** as a kid ! The last good horror game I played was alien isolation followed closely by amnesia rebirth which I loved I know that's not popular but I thought it was a really good game ! I just got cry of fear and all the DLC on the computer so I know what I'm doing until Christmas !

This game looks awesome and sounds fantastic (I love sci-fi horror) but the issue is most games that would likely be a big hit end up being flops due to either A: Lag, glitches, bugs etc. B: It's not properly developed. And C: Not much love was put into it, or care which breaks it most.

It used to be the case that developers knew to compile the shaders during loading screens. They also used to be smarter; many modern games feel like they generate and compile thousands of distinct permutations and compile a shader for each... Instead of using uniforms to tweak its results (e.g. to control the colours).

After playing the game I had a really fun time playing it but the dodge mechanics and the GRP need way more improvements I rarely use my GRP just feels like it's in the way sometimes and the dodging is easy to use but has lots of technical issues like even if I dodge correctly I still will get hit the guns are a bit boring I miss Dead Space plasma based guns and the enemy system at times feels horrid they put 4 mutated whatever these things are in a small cramped space expecting me to know what to do off the bat while my characters movement is stiffer than Leon with arthritis like no one thats in their 30s or 20s would run so slow and yes I've worn army gear and can run faster than this guy it's lazy and doesn't make the game scary it felt like a chore more than a playthrough short version of it is game was meh go back to the drawing board with this project if making a sequel.

I hardly used the telekinesis in Dead Space either. And once you figure out you just hold left or right on the left analogue when an enemy attacks regardless of what direction they are attacking you from. You'll get really good at the combat then as you've figured it out. Its pretty easy. I made it to complex for myself early in the game.

@@btchiaintkidding7837 I didn't upgrade the telekinesis in Dead Space much as its not to important to use against creatures like you do in Callisto Protocol. In Callisto Protocol your encouraged to use it more. There are loads of traps to throw enemies into. And you use Telekinesis to grab loot in Callisto Protocol also. Have you played Callisto Protocol yet? As the further you get in the more different paths start to show up. You go off the main path to find stuff just like on Dead Space and there are secrets hidden in around the environment you use Telekinesis to get. There are puzzles in Callisto Protocol. But it's more like move a floating box to climb so you can get to a secret or you need to Telekinesis a vent open so you can climb in. Environment puzzles.
