    Good video but would have preferred if you went in to more detail of what YIIK actually tried to say rather than just problems with the gameplay. I feel like I understand absolutely nothing about the game other than its gameplay mechanics. Why did you want it to succeed more than the other 2? this was stated in the video but wasn't elaborated on, I have no understanding of what the game was trying to be, so I can't answer it for myself. Overall though, great video! I hope to see more from you.

    I totally agree with you. I had another comment bringing up the exact same issue and you're both totally correct, I did a big uh oh there and should have elaborated on this. My next video is on a standalone game so that video shouldn't have that issue as much as this one. Anyway, I do have issues with YiiK's themes, and I'll actually tell you my issues right in this reply (Spoiler Warning:) YiiK is a game that attempts to tackle the idea of flaws. The game attempts to present this theme through Alex Eagleston, the main character of the game and an intentionally unlikeable character. He has pretentious monologues, annoying acts of selfishness, and the player's actions can cause a party member to lose their life, with which Alex's actions and inner monologues are legitimately a little bit disgusting. He is a massive piece of garbage with the idea that he grows in the story along with the player. By the end of the game, Alex hits rock bottom and needs the player to join him in saving the world, through a forth wall breaking moment that establishes there are millions of parallel universes with a version of Alex and all of his party members, and the one in your universe consists of *you*, the player, and all your friends. It's almost a really neat fourth wall break, and probably the best part of the game. But it's *almost* a really neat fourth wall break. Because Alex doesn't have any actual consistent character development. The game could totally have kept him a bit douchey, even by the end of the game, but he says and does stupid things until the final chapter starts, basically, so not only does the player not even think he grew that much by the time it's over, but the game literally tries to compare the player to Alex through the alternate universe shenanigans when the player probably doesn't even like Alex (ESPECIALLY if they took the route that resulted in the party member death). That's a very bare bones explanation of YiiK's flaws, but I feel like it has a lot of excellent ideas concerning its story, with the fourth wall break being a huge stand out moment, but also with the idea of Alex LITERALLY being the most important being in the universe whose failure will doom every planet by the end of the game is so extra it's hilarious. Yeah that's about it

    @@mageyplss Ah that does sound interesting, cant wait to see this explained in your editing style lol. Does the planned update intend on rewriting the story to fix these issues or just the gameplay and levelling mechanics like you mentioned?

  • @mageyplss

    @mageyplss

    @@EchoesPF878 I am not entirely sure, that's why all I said was that it promised to fix gameplay issues. I was going to say that it planned on improving the story but I didn't actually see much about it so I decided to cut me saying that out. The closest thing to story improvement that is promised are reworked cutscenes, and yes, they are visually incredible and a massive step up from the cutscenes of the original release. They very well could improve parts of the story to make the message more clear, and I hope they take that extra step to do so, but most of the reveals for the update are for things like the revamped mind dungeon. You should look at the opening cutscene for YiiK 1.5, it looks very good. As for my editing style; I still want to keep the style for all of my future videos but I still feel like it has a lot of room for improvement. That is to say that my next video(s) might not be exactly like how this video was edited. I feel like people don't really understand how much time goes into crafting a video with my editing style, and for me, doing something as simple as finding every single clip I need for a video is an entire process that can make a minute of a video take multiple hours. Not to say people are ignorant but I have to adapt my editing style to the length of the video to an extent to get the video finished relatively quickly, and even then, getting out one video every two weeks takes up most of the time that I'm not putting towards school. yea that's all i wanted to say ig

    @@mageyplss The issue here is that you believe the intent was that "Alex is going to change" Alex actually is working against that trope altogether. The point is that the growth is "false" that it's supposed to be the appearance of growth but from a guy who refuses to EVER admit his faults and grow. It's where that "Post-Modern" thing comes in As far as gameplay goes it's important that the developers have been open that the way it's designed was not what they wanted but was rather a suggestion from the publisher from playtesting. With nearly every dungeon completely remade before release. (The original versions are viewable in game files and they are pretty awful) And how it even still has run out of its budget. (I.V's Budget has been completely self (ACKK) funded and the publisher has no involvement)

    @@hellkrai I see what you mean, I considered the possibility of him not being meant to change but I felt as though that wasn't the case considering the ending that directly compares Alex to the player. He also has redeeming qualities and the ending is played completely straight, so idk this is why I didn't go into the game's themes lol

    The problem with this video is, while you did describe the messages behind Chickory and Celeste (And implied that it worked well, even if you went into more detail with Chickory's execution than Celeste's.), you didn't do the same for YIIK. Talking entirely about YIIK's gameplay, something I myself can't compliment as someone who's never played it (Or any of these games, for that matter.), but not about the message it was trying to convey and how it did or did not work. At least how it failed in its execution, with the usage of the gameplay in mind. Because I don't know; a game can succeed in its message but fail in its gameplay, or vice versa. If vice versa was what you meant, I think you should have clarified it. Thank you for your understanding.

    I definitely see what you mean there. How the game presents its themes is definitely flawed and I shouldn't have neglected to talk about how the game fails at them, and I think part of the reason why I didn't even though I could was because I was a lot more bothered by the gameplay when I played it than anything else, and I lost focus on all other elements. It's honestly a pretty glaring issue in the video, but I also think I didn't want the yiik portion of the video to be too long in comparison to the other game discussions. I know that sounds silly but it's easy for me to get lost in all my talking points. I'm working on the next video's script and will take your criticism into account for that.

    Hi everybody, here's a little update. first of all, I'm very happy that so many people are enjoying and relating to this video (I released one that came out after this one but it kinda tanked so have a look at it if you have 6 minutes to spare, it looks way nicer than this video so that's always a plus in my book kzread.info/dash/bejne/opN5o7ukYqvfpJM.html ), but I want to improve and improve and improve with every single video I make (I've seen a couple of comments criticising this video and I'm trying my best to address them the best way I can). kzread.info/dash/bejne/c2qbxrCiftGXdrg.html this is a link to my latest video but I had a few issues with it that hopefully won't be an issue in future videos. I'm trying to upload recordings so I don't have to use my computer to film them, but for the games I'm talking about in that video, that unfortunately wasn't a possibility at times. I'm going to make more videos on games that are on consoles where that's more viable for me, but I'm also interested in getting a completely new desktop strictly for making nice-looking videos (so that clipchamp can't crash anymore and OBS recordings look professional). Hopefully I can get monetised soon in that case but whatever I just love making videos at the moment, anyway thanks for listening to that word vomit and have a great day.

    @@boxylemons7961 pretty sure it isn't ngl, I think that opinion originated because of how relatively new video games are (the same thing happened with graffiti and people throwing it off as nothing but a method of vandalism) and because there was also push around video games being nothing but a toy for children, or even something genuinely harmful in any capacity. Video games being seen as something for children is also probably a factor involved in it not being perceived as art, as typically kids media is unfairly seen as something that rarely can have any depth to it. That's a whole other can of worms I'd like to get into at some point tho lol

    I think it's because most "normal" people assume that you just need to type a few lines of code, add the game into the game files, and put 3,000 shaders onto it and boom, easy triple a game in 5 minutes, not at all considering the sheer amount of time, effort, and MONEY that goes into creating games, especially for smaller developers such as indie game creators. There are a lot of games that are extremely visually pleasing, have a really fleshed out gameplay system that ensures that you won't get bored of it within 1 hour of playing, games that don't constantly try to stay relevant by constantly adding more content locked behind paywalls that range from either what should be just a small free update to a rather small addition (such as skins for stuff, like characters and items) either through an optional virtual currency, actual money, or both. Of course, 1 singular game can have all 3 of these and still be considered "bad/inferior" due to the rest of the content within it. Unfortunately though, most people would only look at the "top" games (the extremely popular ones/trendy ones or triple 'a's) as "The definitive video gaming experience" and think that everything else is inferior, usually trying relate almost ALL video games that aren't the top games to the generic copy and paste ad riddled slop that you typically find in mobile app stores.
