The tech secrets of F1’s dominant Red Bull RB18

Спорт

Brought to you by Aramco: bit.ly/3N0TswF
The Red Bull RB18 was not only the best car of 2022, but one of the most dominant Formula 1 cars in history.
Max Verstappen won the drivers’ title with four races to spare and Red Bull took the constructors’ championship with an advantage of 146 points after winning an astonishing 17 out of 22 races.
But what made the RB18 so good? It was down to multiple factors given there’s no such thing as a magic bullet in modern F1.
So in this video, we’re going to tell the full story of 2022’s best car and explain the reasons why it was so dominant.

    RB is working like a well oiled machine. Ferrari clearly lacks the experience of fighting for a world championship. Given how many internal shifts there were in the past eight years, it's more or less like a young team without any experience. Cracking under pressure, not being able to develop as fast as their direct competitors. They were effectively fighting with Mercedes and not with RB.

    Something that wasn't mentioned, Max Verstappen. If Checo was the leader and Max wasn't there, would we think about the RB18 the same way we do today? i would say the biggest factor is the suspension change that gave them the platform to then work from, almost every other team had suspension travel issues except redbull for most of the year as they had to run the car so stiff and couldn't handle bumps and kerbs, the Ferrari was the odd one since it had bouncing and stiffness but could still ride the kerbs more aggressive than anyone else in the early part of the season. and then if you add the clear straight line speed advantage they had it make its easier to develop a car when you know you have such an advantage you can run more downforce etc using the the straight line speed advantage to cover for it. no other team had this option except redbull all year. when you have 0.3+ sec advantage on straight over almost everyone makes life easy.

    @@Ghost-fz7to yes merc and ferrari was faster through the corners but not fast enough to make up the loss they we having on the straights to redbull, a few races to point this out jedah, Bahrain, spa, monza, COTA, Mexico, Abu Dahbi, French GP, Austria just to name a few these tracks. but if you take quali out of it cause ferrari had the faster quali car all year tbh. the redbull straight line speed gave then huge advantages in the race when DRS could not be used vs everyone else. SO about last year merc at the start of the year it was slower than the redbull until Silverstone where the upgrades they brought unlocked the cars true pace, from there the merc and redbull were more or less equal only specific tracks showed the advantages of the cars example dutch GP and qatar last year really showed how the car specific features can be good and bad points. redbull began running skinny wings in the 2nd of the season to try and match the merc new straight line speed but they still had the downforce to match the merc. while merc were running bigger rear wings to get the extra downforce they needed so both teams had a advantages then began making compromise to make up for the other. you could say brazil, jedah and last race of last season hamltion straight line speed advantage was more down to him been able to run that new engine at a much higher mode as it was basically built for 3 races so he had way more power, if you compared his speed to bottas was so running the engine in the more normal mode to last more races.

    A dominant F1 car is never down to one specific component. Everything has to work together perfectly. Only then its possible to have a dominating car. So saying the suspension was the main factor - the argument is diffucult to sustain, especially as the Ferrari was not less effective in the first half of the season when riding kerbs etc. At the end of the day, if anything, then it was the aerodynamic concept of Red Bull. It relied more on diffuser performance with tunnels with a high roof and a lot of vortices creators. They opened up the diffusers sidewalls and energised the vortices by air from the top the floor. Their car bssically worked more like a flat-floor car, less dependant on low ride heights. The Ferrari on the other hand, with very low tunnels relied more on floor performance itself, dependant on low ride heights. As TD39 basically made higher ride heights mandatory, the aero concept of the RB18 benefitted, while the concept of the F1-75 suffered negatively. So - at the end of the day it was without a doubt the aero concept of the RB18 that was the true secret, and it has to be said that the reason was a midseason change in the technical regulations. Some fans of Red Bull and the RB18 may not like it - but its not only a fact, but technically as simple as clear and like simple maths.

    The 2 factors that set RB apart was their floor was shaped in a way that never let the flow be completely interrupted by the car's proximity to the track. And secondly they controlled the rear floor edge with the "skate" that never let it seal. Both gave them better control over how quickly negative pressure developed and allowed better matching of the rising aero load to the suspensions spring and damper rates.

    Although the Red Bull was clearly the best car for most of the season, I wouldn't class it as dominant in the way that word's usually understood. To me, it just didn't seem that their pace advantage was particularly huge, and certainly nothing like the way Mercedes dominated the flat-bottomed hybrid era. In many ways this season reminded me of 2001, in that one car was the best but the overwhelming points advantage was more to do with rival teams slipping up and taking points off each other.

    Ferrari and Mercedes have similar shift of personel to gain knowledge, but it's definitely unfair for teams like haas or alpha romeo who don't have the money to do such projects. It's incredibly hard to police this, as companies are allowed to spend their money on any projects they want outside of F1, and they can gain at least knowledge for their engineers, but the FIA can't deny them that. The big teams will always be big, unless we introduce some kind of artificial capping, where you lose performance the more success you have, but that just goes against the spirit of F1.

  • @TimPaddy

    @TimPaddy

    A bounce is a single reaction to a track feature. Porpoising is a continued, uncontrolled bouncing that happens at a frequency which is relative to the vehicle's speed (caused by the suspension's inability to deal with aero effects). Porpoising can be initiated by a single bump, but does not have to be.

    Redbull fans like to put Max on a pedestal, and after spending years downplaying Hamilton's performance, saying oh it's the car, now RedBull built a rocket ship of a car and they are now downplaying how dominant the car was. Did you all miss the part that the car won 17 of the 22 races in 2022? Remember the time Max started 14th or so and still won by a mile? Ferrari was at par with Redbull in the first few races, but after that they tailed off in development. The Redbull straight-line speed was insane, they were just passing other cars as if they were standing still. You don't have to be as superior as the W11 to be considered dominant. 0.3 to 0.4 sec faster than your rivals in race trim is enough. Forget about the number of poles that Ferrari got with Leclerc, it was the race pace that mattered. You can always optimize a car for a single lap, but come to the race, it is slow. I am not taking away Max's talents, he has it in abundance, but to say the 2022 Redbull was not dominant is preposterous. Congratulations to Redbull for building a rocket ship, and Max put it to good use, and they won both championships. Even Horner himself said it a few times. "We have the fastest car on the grid". Who are we to keep apologizing for them. Time to move on. It is the car. Nothing to see here.

    Given that, in the RB18, Red Bull have a solid basis to work from, they'll relatively easily manage with less development time. There's already a lighter monocoque that could be worth extra tenths, and we already know Red Bull is less affected by ride height changes, so next year's regulations change little to nothing on that front. That leaves just the standard iterative work on the car, which can be relatively cheap.

    The beginning of the year the car had understeer and Checo was still slower. He fluked a podium, that he admitted himself he couldn't do again with 1000 laps. What they need to do is replace Checo with a better driver. Just FYI, Villenueve said in 2020 that Newey prefers to design a car this way because it's quicker, or has the potential to be quicker. So it's probably more likely that they wanted a driver like Verstappen who could drive a car the way Newey wants to make it.

  • @fam.hunger5244
    @fam.hunger5244 Жыл бұрын

    Sorry, but saying that Red Bull or Newey had a deeper understanding about the underfloor is really wrong. Indeed Red Bull did not really build a "true" ground effect car. The RB18 relied more on diffuser performance with tunnels with a high roof and a lot of vortices creators. They opened up the diffusers sidewalls and energised the vortices by air from the top the floor. So their car literally worked like a flat-floor car. And such a car is less dependant on low ride heights. The Ferrari on the other hand, with very low tunnels relied more on floor performance itself, a true ground effect car, dependant on low ride heights. As TD39 basically made higher ride heights mandatory, the aero concept of the RB18 benefitted, while the concept of the F1-75 suffered negatively. So - at the end of the day, it was not about a better understanding, but about a bold and different aero concept that worked. And it also has to be said that it was benefitted by a midseason change in the technical regulations. Some fans of Red Bull and the RB18 may not like it - but its not only a fact, but technically as simple as clear and like simple maths.

    Mercedes weren’t targeted by regs in 2021. Mercedes happened to suffer, but the 15% downforce reduction was done at the request of Pirelli to prevent extreme tyre wear and blowout (after all, why would they design a whole new tyre for just one season). It was actually predicted that the changes to the floor would affect the high rake cars like Red Bull and Alpha Tauri more. Due to the higher rear height, CFD showed the lessened ability to seal the sides of the floor with vortices to be quite harmful to them. CFD doesn’t always translate into reality however, and the reality was that Mercedes weren’t as well adapted to the technical changes as other teams. This combined with Honda making strides in their engine led to the W12 and RB16B being somewhat level. It’s not targeting, if it were targeted we would have seen Mercedes drop down the grid like Ferrari in 2006, not be a frontrunner…
