It's not just a movie. It's based on actual events that happened in Japan. There's a statue of the original Hachiko outside Shibuya station in Tokyo Japan. Fun Fact: There are two types of Akitas. The Akita Inu or Dewa Akita which originates from Japan, and the American Akita which is larger and with a denser bone structure. Hachi in this movie was an Akita Inu and you can tell by it's slighter frame, coloring and the white(urajiri) markings. Beautiful dogs but difficult and require an experienced handler.

They are 5 statues, one even erected while he was still alive, but with years of waiting for his owner behind , in front of Akita Prefecture. Some others are much more recent made, like that one by the Tokyo University, with both, him and the professor, and another one by Akita Museum. The place in front of Shybuia Station was full of people attending to his funeral.

I'm not someone that cries easily...especially at movies. THIS movie tears me up every time. I don't know how anyone can watch this and not get emotional. Hachi had such a pure love for Parker and only just wanted to be with him and make him happy. That is all he wanted in life. When that purpose was snatched away, all he could do was continue to live each day in hope that one day Parker would return. I'm sure he knew he wouldn't but he was so loyal that it was all he could do to find purpose was to live out days as if Parker was still with him. Talk about a pure love and loyal companion. I don't know if dogs have souls but I can't help to hope that after the real Hachi passed away, his soul was able to be reunited with the Professor. Again, I don't know how anyone can't get emotional at this movie but if anyone who has ever had a dog or pet gets this.

The Japanese professor was just telling Hachi that his master is never coming back, but if Hachi feels he must continue waiting for him there, then he should continue to do that as long as he feels the need.

As a grown man I subconsciously suppress my emotions a lot, especially around people. But this movie got me crying, it makes you want to appreciate other people in your life 10000x more.

When my previous dog died 7 years ago, my wife at the time dissipated me from getting another dog again because the pain of loss was too much for her. We went a couple of years before we got our next dog. The wife in this movie makes similar comments to what my now ex-wife used to say. No more dogs. We agreed after Lucas we weren't getting another dog.

this is the reason your furbabies have to be allowed to say goodbye like us too, they just think you abandoned them or still coming home. They deserve to grieve as well. This movie is a gut puch everytime I see it.

Like the man said it's got to be a purpose why the dog will fetch. And he knew what was wrong with him. he could smell it. Dogs have a better sense on things than us humans before we know things it's too late to do anything about it. The one I love about dogs Is there pure and loyal but there not driven by greed or hate like humans. They don't act human they are loyal and good companions. And will be there for you. As long as you treat them good, they will be good back to you. I love how smart they are too how to train to for recuse and helping out others.

I hope someone sees both this and my previous comment and asks to put “LIGHT IT UP” on one of her Patreon poll if you agree with me. Ive had to spend a lot of my checking and savings & am waiting for the state of WV to send me an reimbursement check for my Hot Water Tank, Furnace, Deep Freezer, Fridge, Washer & Dryer due my house being hit by a Flash Flood 2 Saturdays in a row. The 2nd flood wasn’t as bad, but it cost me more $$$ to move my brand new hot water tank & my brand new furnace. And I’m currently staying in my parents home at my age until everything is deep cleaned & checked for black mold before I can move back. It’s taking forever bc all our local mom and pops, along with the national chains (Walmart, Home Depot, Costco, Lowes) are either sold out or behind with everything. That’s why I can’t spend money on MJ’s patreon just yet. PLEASE DO ME THIS SOLID IF YOU MAKE IT TO THE END OF THIS COMMENT. TY ❤!!

Having seen Hachi b4 (knowing wht's coming) "fetch" scene really gets me. I enjoy your reactions MJ. Even tho we're different generations, genders, life experiences, etc. & will / do hv different perspectives on "this & that" (which is normal). No perspective or opinion is necessarily 100% right or wrong. Cuz of tht, I'd like to suggest another Richard Gere movie tht's a classic but (some reason) not big w/KZreadrs. "An Officer & a Gentleman." Came out in 1980, so, Richard Gere much younger & very different movie from Hachi. Wld be interested in how you'd react to it.

He plays Coach Carter’s son in the same titled movie starring Samuel Jackson & is one of Channing Tatum’s 1st Movies. Ri’chard is also best know playing bsf turned bf on the UPN sitcom “One On One”), & Sara Gilbert (former child star who best known for playing Rosanne’s daughter Darlene in the show Roseanne. Also reprised her role as Darlene as well as became a writer, director & executive producer of the Conner’s after Rosanne lost her racist ass/trump-glazing mind).
