I took mom's "sadness" being the head of her board being moreso empathy and dad's being "anger" being moreso justice or like the ability to stand his ground under pressure.

My mom took me to the circus for the first time when I was 5 years old and for whatever reason, one of the clowns picked me, of all people, out of the crowd and started doing his clown tricks for me. I was absolutely terrified. 30 years later and I still do not like clowns. 😂

While it’s not shown in the movie, if I had to guess, the reason imagination island was still running is because most people try to escape life situations by daydreaming or doing something creative. Especially school aged kids. The jingle that always pops up in my head is JG Wentworth. Can’t fault them for clever marketing 😂 but dang it, get out of my head!!! Anxiety and sadness is unfortunately probably at my control center but sadness is more out of frustration. I get why teachers ask students to introduce themselves even if it’s extremely uncomfortable. I think the idea is to try and help them make connections with students who may have similar interests. Bing Bongs death is truly one of the saddest passings I’ve seen in a film and his sacrifice is far greater than some realize. People always say that people live on through memories. If that’s true, then Bing Bongs passing is true death because he’s forgotten. He was willing to be forgotten for Riley to live happily. It hurts my heart when Riley comes home. She’s doing something so many kids do. They try to be tough for their parents, especially when parents unintentionally put that pressure on them. What that looks like in kids varies but in this case, she suppressed her feeling until cracks started to form. People can only do that for so long and it’s definitely more difficult for kids because there’s so much happening with them in terms of development. When she asks her not to be mad at her, it’s not for running away, but rather for her not being happy, as if she’s a bad for not living up to her parents expectations of acceptable emotions. That’s crushing! Of course her parents never intended to put that pressure on her and probably didn’t think about how this move could seriously affect her. There’s a lot of times I’ve heard adults dismiss major family changes with “kids will get over it because they adapt more easily to their environment.” Sure, kids can adapt but not always without help, sometimes professional help and sometimes it really doesn’t work out at all. It’s happened to me twice as a kid. I won’t explain everything but in one instance, I went through a traumatic passing of a loved one and then had to move shortly after before kindergarten. I was alienated from my class and bullied. The one girl I made friends with, I was banned from playing with once her parents met me for the first time. The reason I couldn’t play with her was I looked different from them 👧🏽/👩🏼👨🏻 I was literally turned away at their door. It wasn’t an impromptu visit. This was set up. I was totally isolated. My only friend was my dog and my teacher, who ultimately held me back because she said I was too immature due to the fact I’d give her hugs… as a 5yr old because she was the only stable person I knew. I had emotional problems at home. The adults couldn’t understand why I was so angry and depressed, as a result, I was constantly labeled a bad kid by my family overall. I spent a lot of time in my room or by myself until I moved back to my home town. This film isn’t really for kids as much as it is for adults. Kids will be entertained but adults will see the bigger picture. It’s a good reminder to try to pay attention and maybe inquire about how they are doing with things. Being open, listening and letting them know that change is difficult and it’s ok to feel some way about it, but that you’re always there to listen and try to help and inquire professional help guidance if needed. It’s so easy to overlook kids when parents are so busy just trying to keep a roof over head and food on the table.

6:00 at first I thought you were saying children/teens aren’t able to feel “real” sadness or depression because they’re not old enough. i’m glad you mentioned that “now she has.” I am 20 and too many people tell me I haven’t experienced anything that would make me depressed 🤣 weird way of thinking lol

21:03 I didn't need an imaginary friend when I was little: they are created by an only child that feels alone; those who have at least a sibling like me don't feel alone (most of the times)

I wouldn’t say that’s entirely true. Imaginary friends can just be an extension of creativity. I know someone who had one that had 2 siblings. The middle and youngest would play together all the time. Sometimes having an imaginary friend helps kids process a variety of things and helps them learn.
