Kudos to Rex for his directing and editing skills! It was VERY easy for Daniel and I to go super nerdy and launch into an hour long conversation on the topics and Rex did a great job of reigning us in AND editing the video so that it maintained the core and real heart of the conversation. A question for you sir, possibly the other gents as well. Isn't there possibly a meaningful difference between Scotch and French Wine because wine grapes are affected by the environment in which they are cultivated? My impression has always been that whiskey is more controlled because different batches of grain don't change that much and the barrels and peat etc are mostly consistent, or at least explicitly controlled by the producer. On that basis my understanding was that with Wine there might be places where its impractical to produce good wine because the land sucks. Good whiskey could come from anywhere but because distillation is expensive places with a history have a leg up on newcomers because they've got it down and the business is stable. I wondered with your cross domain knowledge you might be able to help me understand this?

@@Vote4Drizzt Yes, the word you are looking for is "terrior" or "provenance" which includes the climate, soils, angle of the sun on grapes etc. Bordeaux as a maritime climate whereas Napa has a Mediterranean climate and the two regions have different soils. The assumption of the French up until 1976 was that they had superior terroir. Well, generally speaking, Napa has better climate but Bordeaux has better dirt. When it comes to whisky regions, there is SOME sense of terrior but not to the extent of wine. Without a shadow of a doubt, while California has better weather for Grapes Texas has better weather for making whisky because of how it effects the interaction of the spirit with wood. Texas is also growing some unique corn and experimenting with mashbills very differently than Kentucky. When I recently visited Texas I was visiting distilleries and was paying particular attention to the environment. A 2 year whisky from Balcones or Ironroot is far superior than any current California distillery could hope to achieve (I've been to 8 of them in California) in such a short period of UNLESS they moved the distillery out into the desert. I hope this answers your question.

You guys took me from a guy who watched your vids because they were entertaining, to a guy who tried some whisky, (but couldn't pick out any notes) to a guy who has begun to be able to smell (and taste) a couple different notes and appreciate whiskey. (the journey continues)

So true guys. My son always asks for the same 2 whiskies because they are his favourites. So for his birthday I did a 16 bottle blind shoot out for him. His favourite whiskies all got knocked out in the first round. He was totally gobsmacked that he actually liked whiskies he had previously dismissed as bottom shelf. But on a real plus point he actually enjoyed 15 out of the 16 🥃 Proud dad 🏆

Mark Slinger , very true. I never gave wild turkey 101 a second look, but then one day I was under the weather and sent the wife to get a bourbon for a hot toddy. She came back with WT 101. So I said this will at least make a serviceable drink in a pinch. It was so much better than I ever thought it could be. I reserved some for drinking neat after my sickness was over and was still shocked to learn how well it stood up to other higher dollar bourbons.

As an old, retired, psychology professor, I greatly enjoyed this post. Y’all are the best!

In the third part you could literally replace the word "whiskey" with *any* other thing that people like and it would still be *perfect* advice. Outstanding job, guys!

That's why I love Blind Tastings so much. I once did one with a group of Scotch lovers. They were no snobs or self-proclaimed experts, but they all were pretty sure that they like Single Malts better than blended whisky. It was quite a surprise when in the final results, "Black Bottle 10" was a tiny bit ahead of Highland Park 18, which made a close 2nd.

Snob's subjective opinion saying your subjective opinion is objectively wrong is, objectively, a bad opinion. Subjectively speaking, of course.

So it sounds to me like, the more tastes and smells I’ve experienced, the more interesting and complex whiskey can be? As a concept, that’s awesome.

I agree 100%. I often talk about whisky life-lessons, both wine and whisky can make great metaphors for the parables of life.

4:34 this is super important for anyone starting out tasting whiskey. If other people are calling out notes and flavours that you recognise but can't detect in the whiskey, this is FINE! It takes time and experience to start recognising those familiar scents in whiskey as opposed to their 'natural environment'. I was super sheepish starting out because I was thinking 'I know what marmalade, candied peel, leather, oak etc. smell like but this just smells like alcohol to me'. Luckily my more whiskey-acclimatised friends were very reassuring and encouraging; that was over a year ago and now I'm one of them!

Newbie to your community here... I think your "Guidelines" aren't just good for Whiskey, but for SO many aspects of life. Thank you!

Great episode and message, guys. What hit home to me was: "The most important thing isn't what's in the bottle- it's the human beings around the bottle and having a great experience with those people."

10/10 video. I agreed with every word. I always try not to let my enthusiasm spiral into the dictatorial snobbery that you often see from people who (like myself) feel like they've started to "get" whiskey. I'm the only one in my friend group who's really into whiskey, but something I always say is "If you like it, it's good", much along the same lines as your #1 rule. I think it helps them not feel guilty about drinking whiskey in coke, or with ice, or in their favourite non-Glencairn glass, or whatever. Whiskey is a wonderful thing, and the last thing you need is guilt and anxiety over your preferred method of imbibement. Great stuff guys!

I'm not new to whiskey but I'm newer to it as a hobby. You guys make it feel so accessible, and I just want to say thank you for that. I'm excited to push more into the world!

This video was one of my favorites. To me whisky is about appreciation and community. Its been such a great hobby and intrest to have, it genuinely brings happiness and not just from the dram in the glass.

My story is that I was raised in a teetotaler household, so I had no experience with alcohol until I was a few months short of legal drinking age. I had some crown mixed drink and a jack and coke. And I definitely preferred the Tennessee touch over the Canadian rye flavor. So for years in my early 20’s I stuck mostly with good old Jack around while I ventured into other American made bourbons and having a soft spot for rum. It wasn’t until I moved back home with my brother that we decided that once weekly we would go out and purchase something totally new to us to try. We did beer nights at a local shop that allowed pick 6 cases so we could try a wide variety of new beers without breaking the bank and around monthly we’d go pick one new whiskey each. This expanded our horizons towards Scotland and Irish whiskey. It was a good system

I love when you meet a snob, and they are sipping on a $90-$120 bottle of grocery store bought whiskey claiming other-worldly properties. The perspective that makes me love this is that the majority of grocery store bought whiskey originates from 1 (mostly) behind the scenes whiskey producer; MGP. No this is not a dig at the whiskey industry, I don't frankly care where my delicious booze comes from -- it's just funny.

What a great video. I have done most of what you guys alluded to in the video. We have created a community of friends and we get together too taste and enjoy whisky. That being said, I have probably also been the classic a**hole.

Five friends of mine and I had a blind tasting last night of ten plus whiskeys Two of us are very new to tasting and describing what we find in smell and taste. It was an awesome learning experiance for me personally being that it was my first. Opened up a whole new level of whiskey enjoyment for me. I now have a greater appreciation for the whiskey experiance. Al

That's why i moved more to IB bottlings, since they are usually non coloured and NCF. And many are single cask and cask strength. But mostly - whether its IB or OB - i check out actual experiences from ppl online on fora and KZread to see whether the general consensus is which bottle is worth buying. And although that it's still very very subjective what can be considered a fine whisky, the market is flooded with limited editions and artistic packages and PR talk, u only have the opinions of (hopefully) integrity tasters to decide on buying a bottle. Certainly in these days where budgets are tight and more importantly, prices high ..

This was a great video, I am only two years into my whiskey journey having learned so much via the vault but knowing full well there is so much more I don't know. I don't deal well with talking to people or social settings, so it is a boon to have this wonderful spirit that I can eagerly share with others. "How do you whiskey?" has been an ideal opener to say to anyone who shows a slight interest in wanting to try more whiskey. I do my best to share my enjoyment by first finding out what they are interested in (Bourbon,Scotch,Irish etc.) and that gives me a starting point to at least share some knowledge and hopefully experience if they point out a bottle I have sampled before. With close friends I offer up samples of some of my choice bottles by filling up a typical sized empty prescription pill bottle, I do that for a number of reasons. It's safer and easier to transport short distances (can't always host a tasting), the humor of alcohol being a "prescription" once upon a time, and as mentioned in the video to cloud the expectations of the imbiber by removing the fancy bottle. So far every person I have done that with has lit up after smelling and tasting some of my favorite bottles, and seeing that spark in a persons eyes when they taste something amazing does wonders for my spirit animal. The more episodes I watch....the more I want to see! You guys aren't just discussing whisky...you are discussing life! The shenanigans are a wonderful side trip full of laughter!!! Since I started watching this channel....my brother and I have started trying new whiskies together! It's been great having that time with him and it brings us closer. I've been telling him about the different things I have learned from you guys! Just recently we have a few others that now want to join us on whisky night! lol. The only rule we have is you must bring one bottle with you ...for all to try! lol. Doesn't matter if its whisky, bourbon, scotch....as long as bring one! lol. Thank You Whiskey Tribe!!!

I often am swayed by good packaging or a creative label. Not ashamed and yes, I'm aware that a nice box with magnets and clasps maybe doubles the cost sometimes...don't care because it looks good on the shelf even after it's empty. I take $6 glencairns camping because my friends laugh about it and I'm not gonna be serving them in a red Solo cup. I drink whisky with friends. The whisky isn't the "star" it's the experience. Sharing with friends, stories told over a few drams, laughter. In a few weeks I'm not gonna remember my tasting notes of the night. I will remember when friend ....told a story of his first drink with his grandpa, or his last. If my buddy blind tastes a bottle of Signet and says "it's just okay" I'm fine with it. If he asks the price and gawks I might just say "Yeah, but look at this awesome packaging" then we laugh. And pour another dram. Magical.

Rex made an awesome point. The most important thing is not what's in the bottle, it's the human beings around the bottle

I'll add to this (as a complete novice who has gotten into whisky the last year thanks to Daniel and Rex) that I have found that it has taken some time for my palate to adjust to the flavors. Whiskey I tried a year ago now tastes different to me today. (better)

I'm SO happy you posted this video. Everything you said was true. The experiences we get with wine, whiskey, or any other alcohol can really change drastically depending on so many factors! It's also comforting to know that as a whiskey beginner, when I say "Uh..I don't get that flavor", everything is still fine, LULZ. Nice video guys.

Loved this video, great to note that the same reference may have two very different response in different cultures. By the way, I’ve had some really disappointing rare/expensive whiskeys, Angel’s Envy & Pappy 23 are two prime examples.

My favourite tasting-related way that the human animal can be fooled is if you do a small blind tasting and whoever pours it throws in two of the same whisk(e)y...It's so easy to think that those two glasses are different!

Enjoyed great Thai whiskey hanging out in Thailand!! Luv all whiskey and more. (Not as much anymore since I’m an alcoholic) but the memories are still there kind of!

I have been recently getting into trying different Rye whiskeys and Rittenhouse rye, which is not an expensive whiskey at all, has been consistently a favorite of mine. It was because of the experience I had with the flavor. It was just at home and I do have Glencarin glasses, but it was the memories I felt tasting it. When I tasted it, I was 10 years old again, on a cold Saturday morning just before the sunrise, smelling the dirt and earth in the cold winter air in the woods with my dad getting ready to walk down to our tree stand. It's amazing what the mind can do to associate flavors with memories. To this day, I have yet to find a good rye whiskey that tops that because of the association my mind had with that first sip of Rittenhouse Rye. Various Islay Scotch whiskeys are still my favorites, Lagavulin 16 and Ardbeg Ten are definitely at the top of my lists, but that experience has really got me more into rye whiskey as well.

To me thats why Whisky is such a great thing, there is nothing establish. At the end of the day, your brain will always use the things you already know in order to make sense of new things. In my experience, and as a mexican, a lot of whiskyies remind me of Mexican Delicacies and all sorts of local candy!

You guys have got me into whiskey. I can’t drink anything else willingly. This is very unexpected. I didn’t know this would be a thing.

You guys should talk to the "basic brewing" folks because I think you would get along and maybe you would have some interesting crossovers.

I got a chance to taste Pappy 25 and I thought is was average at best. A friend of mine thought it was the most amazing thing he’s ever tasted. I got him a second taste of the pappys and told him it was Jefferson’s. He thought it was ok but he much preferred the pappys.

The first time I had Johnnie Walker Blue Lable it was delicious, smoky savory, peppery even. Not $250 a bottle delicious, but really tasty.

I love and appreciate most types of whiskeys so I got myself a set of glencairns and I found a hole new universe of taste and experience. It was good before now it's so much better. What I learned from this was to be able to judge a whiskey it's not the first impression that matters it's many different first impressions that matter.

I've always said that making good spirits is mostly about good ingredients combined knowledge and a little luck. There may be some local variations like water source or some kind of wild yeast or other that you've stumbled upon, but as long as you know how to properly put the resources you have locally to task, anyone can make good stuff anywhere.

Thank You guys for your insight and knowledge on the subject of whisky .As a new whisky drinker I am trying to watch as many of your videos as I can to become better informed. I have to admit it was your reviews of the Game Of Thrones set that helped me purchase the 7 that we could get in Australia, but also helped me select and purchase the non GOT branded versions of those whisky's in order to drink with friends so I can keep the limited ones unopened. As I final note, I am wondering if you are aware or have seen the film,"The Angel's Share" by Ken Loach which came out in 2012 ? It is or course film about whisky but so much more. Which brings up a point I hear more about... do whiskey brands slowly raise their prices to try to become the perceived better whiskey? Same with making whiskey hard to find?

On a note about how different people taste things differently, it is worth mentioning that, of the thousands of thousands of smell receptors in our nose, a great deal of them repeat in small quantities. This is because for each group of smelling compounds in nature, we will have a receptor only for that (and there are thousands of thousands of different smelling compounds in nature). All those receptors are, as anything in our body, based on our DNA. Having so many different receptors (that are first based on our genes) also means that it is one of the senses most sensitive to genetic variation, and you know that each person in the planet has no equal (except twins). So, indeed, taste is one of the easiest ways to prove how each one of us perceive nature in different ways. You can have 300 different bottles of whiskey and you can like each and every one of them (highly improbable, it is just an example), but the person with the most similar taste to yours will at least hate one of the bottles. Or have 5 people that hate 1 bottle only, but they will hate a different bottle of each other. Edit: on a note about that final part, saying that we are all equipped with the same tools is accurate. Unless you don't have one of the senses, as a blind person can't see or a deaf person can't hear, but assuming you are someone with all senses, you can enjoy life. As anyone. While I don't drink anything alcoholic, yet, I am curious and willing to engage on this journey!

You know, I took away two things from this video. 1) I think I want a big honey mesquite in my front yard. 2) I guessed you were in the hills northwest of Austin but I mapped it and found out you're southwest in the hills, surrounded by mesquite. This is Day 2 of my Dry Week, by the way, and I'm enjoying a delectible blend of Lipton's and Bigelow Lemon Ginger teas. Meanwhile, the next best thing to drinking whisky is watching you talk about it. When I get back I'll be finishing up bottles of Highland Park and Monkey Shoulder, and segueing back to my usual price range with Teacher's Highland Cream and (Total Wine's house brand) Shieldaig Highland Single Malt supplementing my go-to bourbon, Old Forester 100.

I wonder if anyone noticed the Rex creator at the end 😆 Nice to see your dad enjoying himself!!
