I could easily believe, that everyone was obsessed with Jude Law...this one? Nah Also, nothing against Andrew Scott but he was giving off sinister vibes only while Matt Damon had this innocence to him and I could totally get, why they treated him like their cute pet dog.

Also Jude Law’s Dickie actually makes it believable that he’d just up and leave Marge

@@Dumbangel This is absolutely true. Gwyneth's Marge was well aware of Dickie's tendency to get bored of people, as well as his wandering eyes when it came to the ladies. He says he loves Marge, but you never get the sense that he truly values her, as he frequently does things that he knows will upset her but he never does anything to change his behaviour. She's just the sad, loyal puppy dog that he needs to keep happy to maintain the status quo. In contrast, Dakota's Marge doesn't really have anything to complain about when it comes to Dickie. He remains faithful to her, gives her the desired space to focus on her writing, and frequently asks her opinion on things. They're far more like partners. His only negative is that she loves him far more than he loves her, according to Dickie himself, but his behaviour doesn't reflect that.

Lmfao it was garbage. Anyone who knows anything about filmography can tell you the black and white noir look was horribly done and over saturated. Not to mention the fact it’s pretentious to even do in the first place, albeit poorly.

The series highlighted how important Matt Damon and Jude Law were to the film. As Tom, Matt had this boyish innocence to him that made him very likeable, even when he was committing horrible crimes. It seemed like a case of a dreamer who got corrupted by the situation and deeply afraid of losing his newfound lifestyle. Whereas Andrew Scott as Tom was corrupt from the beginning, and you never really got the sense that he was ever a good person. He was already ripping people off back in New York, and Dickie seemed like just a mark for him. Likewise, Jude as Dickie had this undeniable charm to him that made it very easy to become enamoured with him. Everywhere he went, he was the centre of attention, which he was proud of and used for his own means.but beneath the charming exterior, there was a cold and cruel personality that would come out as soon as he grew tired of the person, which ultimately revealed him as a villain. However, Johnny Flynn as Dickie was far more grounded. He wasn’t particularly charming or exceptionally good looking, so it was much harder to buy him as this playboy that everybody gravitated towards. Even the way he treated Tom was not unreasonable, as he handled rejecting him as best as he could. Obviously, I preferred the film.

@@biharcourt tbh it would work better as an original series if the writers actually did some real work. I’m sick of studios using established characters and titles and tweaking them. It’s just exploitative and stale. Doesn’t it feel like we have so many less memorable original characters being created the last 10-15 years? Especially in American media

Very well said! The movie is irreplaceable! No only Matt Damon and Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow as Marge, Philip Seymour Hoffman as Freddie Miles and Jack Davenport as Peter were also brilliant! It's the impeccable casting for the story. (Of course, including the young Cate Blanchett)

@@randywhite3947Negative, he was in the novel, but was a minor character. Ripley considers taking his identity and decides that he could not pass himself off as him. I have read the novel several times and watched Plein Soleil/Purple Noon along with The 1999 Talented Mr Ripley. The 1999 film by Minghella is a masterpiece. It does take some creative liberties to adapt the novel for film and was more explicit with the homosexual undercurrent, but it was very much truer to the spirit of Ripley in my view. I feel that had Highsmith lived to see Minghella's 1999 Ripley, she would have very loved it. The tv series is quite flawed though still watchable, but is poor compared to Minghella's masterful 1999 adaptation. Meredith Logue is a completely new character created by Minghella, but Peter Smith-Kingsley is already in the novel, just a forgettable minor character.
