The Tale of the Jagged Sign Recap & Review - The Midnight Society

Комедия

On this episode of The Midnight Society, I look back at season 5, episode 2 of "Are You Afraid of the Dark?": The Tale of the Jagged Sign. Kiki tells a tale about two girls who discover an urban legend about a ghost haunting a cliff might be true.

Taking Marjorie's stuff to the thrift shop was pretty messed up. I doubt her family just said "No, get rid of it all". I forgot the music box turned into real Doves. Wth!? And Stig needs to wash his hair, badly.

Yeah, I feel like the Midnight Society kids represent a real personality trait of a kid you probably knew or went to school with, but Stig feels like a character a kid on tv show or a cartoon. I've known a lot of Garys, Kikis, Franks, Sams, and Betty Anns in my life, but I have never met or known a real life Pigpen (sorry, Stig). I'm not saying those kids don't exist, but he is just way over the top.

Gonna have to agree, this one feels pretty been there done that. Maybe I could forgive it if it was in season 1 but the ideas were more played out by this point. Majorie should have been expanded on more. Station 109.1 is a fave of mine so there is that to look forward to.

Yeah, this one is a shame because it's almost there. And I can't blame the runtime on this one. There was plenty of unnecessary stuff that could've been trimmed to improve the story or scares in other places.

This was always among my favorite episodes. Sure it's not scary at all. It's just a sad, heartwarming story. And a rewatch speaks to me more right now, having recently lost a beloved grandfather to dementia. Also adding to this show's multiple Arthur crossovers, the boyfriend is played by the voice of Buster Baxter 😅

I am sorry to hear that. Dementia is one life's cruelest jokes and I'm sorry that your family had to experience it. While reviewing all of these episodes, I have noticed an alarming number of the cast members, both regular and guests, also voiced characters on Arthur. I'm not that familiar with the show (I was more familiar with the books as a kid), but I'm guessing it was also a Canadian production.

Yup saw this as well although not scary but sad and sweet also Marjorie's parents didn't approve of Joshua as she mentioned to Kate I loved the doves on the music box turned into real doves that was sweet and something I've never seen before. I think stories like this were fillers for the show cause it was the fifth season and they were running out or low of ideas for scary episodes that were appropriate for the show. The show was rated Y7 meaning youths 7 to 15

Good review! This episode is one of those that I enjoyed as a child but not so much as a adult. I mean, I don't mind it but everything you said; I have to agree. I never realized how rude Claudia was in that episode. How did her parents raised her? Why would a couple showed their love at a dangerous cliff? That's nonsensical. Thumbs up for the Claudia stunt double for hanging on to that cliff. One of the few positive things about that episode. Quite the opposite from the excellent previous episode.

Yeah, I have to admit that I should've given a shoutout to the stunt team for when she was hanging on to the side. That actually does look really good, but I didn't realize how good until I had already filmed everything and was doing the editing.

I actually thought this episode was rather sweet. Deeply flawed, yes. Questionable, yes. But still sweet. It’s better than the Frozen Ghost episode. Btw, Melissa, bro? What is being harsh on poor Jewel, man? Sensitive! Anyway, not all ghost stories need to be tense. I agree the jagged sign would be better if it had been even less complete than it was. At least, have a quarter of the bird head and wing. I also think it would be more impactful if Margorie kept wandering to the base of the cliff or kept trying to climb the cliff, out of being traumatized for seeing the love of her life fall to his death. Think of it kinda like the 1986 movie “The Boy who could Fly”, where the lead Eric wanted to learn to fly after finding out that his parents were killed in a plane crash and after that became mute. I think that would have been much better having Marjorie behave in a sort of similiar fashion and also be mute, but then we wouldn’t have gotten that exposition - unless it was delayed to the end where the girls catch Marjorie on the cliff and Marjorie almost falls to her death and she explains in a flash of memory that’s why she’s been going to the cliff, and then when they save her and bring her back down and get her safely into a rocker facing the cliff, as she thanks the girls, and that’s when the spirit of her lost love comes to call her to her Paradise, and that’s when she dies peacefully smiling in a rocker with the girls holding her hand and then cut to the music box playing. Then again, that would be heavily ripping off of that movie. Or alternatively, but similarly, they catch Marjorie when she’s about to climb the cliff and they talk her out of it and it’s then that Marjorie comes clean and the girls soothe her by saying “He wouldn’t want you to harm yourself. Remember, he loves you” and then she smiles remembering and that’s when he appears to call her to Paradise. I think that would have been much better than what they did in this episode. Missed opportunity AYAOTD crew. Just saying. BTW, if you haven’t seen “The Boy who could Fly” - I highly recommend it. It’s, IMhO, a fantastic movie, ironically directed by “The Shape Michael Myers himself”, Nick Castle. No seriously! It’s true! Look it up. :)

I did see that movie as a kid. I completely agree with you that it would been more impactful to have Marjorie in the story more and factor her directly into the resolution somehow. You could even still keep it similar to the way it was in the episode, but when Claudia slips the ghost is there asking her why she never showed up. She's pleading for his help, but he is wrapped up in his ghostly sadness that all he can do is keep asking her why. Getting increasingly more aggressive. Kate then arrives at the bottom of the cliff with Marjorie. Kate still overcomes her fear to go help Claudia, but is struggling to pull her up. Marjorie explains what happened on the night he died and shows him the music box, making Joshua realize that she does love him still. He then helps pull Claudia to safety at the last second.
