I am a Chinese now 79 yrs old was born in Sonla, so far I can speak Tai. Like your introduction the Tai Dam story, my family had some relation with Tai Dam peoples in Muang La. Your story is great !

yes! I couldn't agree with you more. Laotian, Black Thai, and Thai have the same root. That's why we can understand each other, not without some misunderstanding in the beginning, but we still get the point of the others :)

I want o know how could someone posted comments here by saying LAO IS NOT TAI and/or LAO AND TAI IS NOT THE SAME ! How well do Tai Dam in Vietnam, Tai Shan or Tai Yai in Myanmar or even Zhuang in Guangxi China know Lao language ? Can I ask all of Tai people out there no matter where you guys are in Yunnan, Guangxi Chiname; Assam India; Chengtung, Tai Yai, Tai Kheun in ( Shan State ) Myanmar; Dien Bien Phu ( Muang Taen ), Son La, Lai Chau ( All Tai Dam, Tai Khao and Tai Daeng) one question ? Please provide me the best answer that you could think of. My question is: What is the meaning of the word " Tai " ( As it represents a tribe or ethnic.) in your dialect regardless of how this word " Tai " would pronounce or written ? ฟังเข้าใจอย๋บ้าง ทำให้รู้สึกเศร้าใจของการเสียบ้านเสียเมือง จากบ้านจากเมือง ไปเที่ยวซาปา หวังจะพบคนไท พบแต่แกว พวกเขาไม่ให้เกียรติคนดั้งเดิมเลย

I agree. The Vietnamization of our Tai-Lao people is heartbreaking. Listening to the lady in the video speak Lao with a Vietnamese accent makes me angry and sad at the same time. The same thing is happening to Laos now. Vietnamese is taught as a 2nd language.

Being able to speak another language as a 2nd language is an advantage. The more languages you can, the more chance you will get to enter a work market :) But I think you guys won't loose your own language and culture, as long as there are still Laotian living next to each other.

seon, to answer your question, there are over 100 different ethnic group live in Laos,6 million is the total populations. Half of them are Tai(tai dam, tai lue, tai dang,tai kao, tai nuay, tai kun and may other tai). The other half of populations are other ethnics. To say that Lao are Tai you are half right.

Tai yai is Lao, they speak Lao, Tai dam not speak Tai

In Thailand we call Lao is Thai Larn Charng but most of then are staying in Northern Lao such as Luang Prabang and Vientian but central and south of Lao they can be exactly Laos . For my case I was born in Thailand we call people who are living in norther of Thailand such as Chiang Mai , Chiang Rai , Prae , Nan , is Thai Lanna while in northeastern such Ubol , Udorn , Khon Kaen we call Thai Isan that they speaking nearer Laotien than Thai language . Maybe the same as you said Tai Dam is living in norther ( Dien Bien Phu ) of Vietnam but in central and southern of Vietnam , they are Vietnamese not Tai . So in my opinion , we are relatives in among Tai - Thai group but not the same person that why we have a little bit different in pronounciation , intonation etc . In Thailand we call ourselve are KHON THAI but we never call us is Kon Tai as we know KON TAI are staying In Shan State of Myanmar but as I said they are relatives of Thailand.

ไทยน้อย หรือ ไตน้อย As I know Thai Noi or Tai Noi is Thailand called by Tai Yai / Thai Yai / Shan . Tai Yai looks like meaning the oldest but Tai / Thai Noi is the youngest . But at present Thai Noi could did a good job to protect their own country and sovereignty so both of two Tai/Thai not comfortable mouth to said Thai Noi but these two Tai/Thai so close to each other than others since location and always each side at border move to each side but recently most of Tai Yai move to Thailand particularly now Chiang Mai looks like New Shan State City ( same as New York in USA ? ) so many Tai Yai immigrant into Chiang Mai but most speaking Kam Muang ( Thai Lanna language ) . Thailand call ourselves Khon Thai คนไทย but Thai Yai call themselves Kon Tai กนไต . Some post said not call them Thai or Tai is up to them depends on your history background. If long and long time you call yourselves Lao or Zhong , Lue it's up to you but please not said instead of another group if some want to call themselves Tai that is very common to many family of Tai/Thai group . Thailand current history changed long time that we has been stayed here we never lived in Altai mountain in China but we will call other as we has called and familiared and some of you can call us as your background.And many family dislike the word "cousin" so we should not use anymore in case some want to use we should use "friend" or "one type of Asian people who staying in .....Country ?
