Danie Russouw is the most underrated player I can think of. Hes never mentioned in any greatest list but .. 3 Currie Cup titles, 3 Super Rugby titles, a Japanese title and cup, a Heineken Cup, a Top 14 French Title, a Tri-Nations title, a World Cup and a series victory over the British and Irish Lions

I've always felt like Danie Rossouw was the most underrated player at that World Cup. The work load he got through was just incredible. The amount of tackles he put and the work he did in the loose and in the tight phases was a significant contribution to the win. That is even in a team of super stars that were all performing at their peak.
I am an English fella who was at this game. This is a few minutes of my life I will never forget. The atmosphere in the stadium was electric, you could feel the tension during the review. Once the decision was made massive roar from Springbok fans and noooo from the English. That was a World Cup winning tackle for sure, momentum was going towards England in the game, that killed it. Great game, great memories. Playing SA in finials is fantastic I just wish we won more!

I remember the English were smashed by us in the opening round and then went on an absolute tear. By the time we reached the final I was super stressed about playing them. I do wish they could have won too that day, it was an incredible match.
As an AB's supporter I'm devasted that Kolisi is injured and may miss the WC ,he is an inspiration and a fierce competitor on the field with not a trace of malice .Let's hope he can recover in time as my picks for the final are the mighty Bok's and France (Still hoping for the AB's to sneak in tho).good luck South Africa 😎😎😎

Very good point; he may not be around for the pool stages but for the business side of the tournament.
There were a number of tournament saving tackles by the Springboks during that world cup. (JP Pieterson's incredible tackle against Fiji in the quarter final comes to mind.)

O Yes,I remember it, Fiji game
I am English. Cueto's foot was in touch before he placed the ball on the ground over the try line. No dispute here - it was a great tackle from the SA second row. Fair and square!
That was not the only try saving tackle Victor had. I can recall many more!!! Man, I miss this guy in our Bulls and Springbok team!!!!

Yes a good player and a good man
Francois Steyn & Percy Montgomery, did the business. World Cup 2007 was the first time i watched rugby & learnt of the sport Previously didn't understand why an attacking team gets the ball & kicks to touch 😅 Have had the honour to meet a couple of Springboks (Habana, Marks, Etzebeth, Jantjies) awesome sportsmen. Go Bokke 2023 siyaya 🎉
Matfield incredible athlete and classy guy - I think people also underestimate the spiritual dynamic in the Springboks in the RWC
100% Victor. Ruggas is ’n lekker ding! We are backing our boys to do it again this year. Thanks Victor & Danie - great video for the World Rugby channel.
The break by Tait was outstanding and it was the last ditch tackle on him that won the World Cup.

If he scored that try it didn’t affect the outcome. We were already 9 points ahead and made about 8 line breaks that game. It wasn’t a very close game

Victor Matfield was a beast
What a great player and a real gentleman. V. M. A legend.
Try-NO. it was not a try, the English player's foot was on the line first before the ball was down.Well deserved South Africa win, Victor Matfeild one rugbys best. Regards Shaun in Wrexham WALES a fan of Welsh rugby and a fan of rugby.
That missed try would not have changed too much I believe. They were 2 scores away and it was a VERY tight game. England was not the better team and it was right that SA won the WC.
Nice work gents!. Just remember that without JPP tackle on the Fijian 5 Rawaca, there wouldn’t have been a final.

True but I felt the momentum swung around half time when their flyhalf went off injured. I think he did his ankle. He was absolutely tearing us apart and a bit later John Smit was sent on to get our head in the right place. While that was a helluva scare I think the Boks had two many big guns to let that one slip.
Great to see these rugby legends enjoying life.
It was only Baa baas but Matfield is the best player I've seen live. Quite perfect in his decision making and scary at lineouts
I just don't like IRB's narrative, that we were lucky. Forgetting that there was a two score lead in order to win, prior the opportunity of the "supposed try"

Also true but it is how headlines are written there's never "Solid and talented SA win game they should have won." There always has to be some little hook which is lame.

As an Englishman I couldnt give it either way. I've always felt that there should be guidance that says "If you cant decide with 20 minutes of replays, reward the defender/attacker".

As a kiwi I thought initially it was a try, but looking from behind his toe touched the line and you see elbow in the air, he carried the ball on his chest which mean elbow in line with the ball, can only mean ball in the air before being grounded, confirmed to me, no way was it a try. The right call made., then another angle confirmed it

As a Safa I can tell you it wasn't a try and made zero difference in the outcome if it was rewarded 15-6 duh !!!! 7 plus 6 = 13 still doesn't win .

@@dougerrohmer yeah merely confirmed it wasn't a try also his foot touched the line then lifted, reminder his foot need only touch the line to be deemed out. 20 minutes and still couldn't award a try. Means they were looking for a reason to award the try, they couldn't find one. put this one to bed. that angle clearly showed quite clearly ball still off the ground, after his foot touched the line.

Love this,as a kiwi respect guys.
What a team that was.
I dunno - I think we absolutely had the measure of that English team. 36 nil in the pool stages, three match series in 07 where we put 50+ points on them in every game. I remember at the time being vaguely disappointed that it wasn't a try as it would have opened up the game and forced us to make some more play rather than slowly, safely and carefully crushing the life out of them with penalties as we ended up doing.
@Martin-pb7ts
Жыл бұрын
But after they lost 36-0 they went on a tear and by the time they got to the final they were a completely different team. I really believe they could have won that game and a try like that would have been a real momentum swinger. Look how Victor talks about that game, the Boks never wrote them off.
@Narapoia1
Жыл бұрын
@@Martin-pb7ts Definitely wouldn't have written then off, but would have gone into the match with a confidence that would have been hard to shake. Even with the 2019 final I reckon the guys went into that far more comfortably than they would have than if they were playing the ABs - even though the English ended up seeing them off comfortably. You don't thrash a yeah 4 times in a row and think you are going to lose right. You don't take it as a given but you back yourself to get there in the end - even if they have played some great games against other teams in the interim, as they did.
That intial footage you can see clearly the foot grazes the touchline then the ball is grounded
I agree, RUGBY has the potential to show ALL South Africans, lighter brown (whites) or darker brown (blacks), we ARE ONE.....WE ARE AFRICANS!!!!!
Dan the Man!
How can people debate? Cueto s foot is clearly in touch before grounding the ball…
"Defense wins World Cups" -Jake White.

lol Dannie rocking a shirt that reads "Babalas rescue" LOL!! YOU SIMPLY CAN NOT CHANGE SOUTH AFRICANS!!!
That try saving tackle was crucial but it itself wouldn't have won England the World Cup. They were 9 points behind. Who knows maybe it would have given them a psychological edge but on its own they would still have been 2 points behind assuming they converted it. It would have been on the touchline so possibly more difficult. But the kicker at the time seemed competent so probably conversion. I don't remember at what point in the game that disallowed try happened. I think it was around the 65 minute mark.

It was just after half-time. So who knows what might have happened. Still agree with you though that the Boks deserved to win it, and probably would have regardless.
The best referee decison ever, replays are good for any sports game just football is making a massive mess of it.
2007 was a great team that worked towards the common goal, but truth is, 2 tackles won us that tournament. This one, and JP Pietersen's in the QF.

As a kiwi we got taken out by a French forward pass in 2007, plain for all to see. Hearing the commentator saying watching the replay " Now was it forward? yes it was, by a mile" was little comfort we lost 18-20 Qtr finals. Wish we had the TMO back then.

Is it me or does this guy look like Yujira
Even with that try allowed with a conversion, S.A would still have won with 2 points
i would en have like to be a englishman that day!!!!!
Won by more than 7 anyway.
All things being equal, England would still have lost if the try was scored and converted - reason being is that the ref was playing advantage and if the try was scored & converted, England would have got 7 points instead of the 3 from the penalty they got from the advantage. This means they would have only got a net 4 extra points, which was not enough to win the game.
even if the try was scored, it wouldnt have meant that england were going to win the world cup on that alone so dont get to ahead of yourself
Still would have won by a few points tho
100% no try!
I say we give them the try and even give them the conversion and then they would have only lost by 1 point. Which is really all the english wanted at the end of the day... its not too late to give them some justice
South Africa 😂
Its not winning the wc...if u take 7points eng still behind...also the play would be different after engl scored...the sboks would change play to score and presure again...sa won engl 2x in that wc and with a big margin.....
Haha that's a loaded title, what was the score in the final 15 - 6 ... let's give England that try and let's assume they kicked it over, we still win at 15/13 ... Sorry let it go
"Everybody will be debating that decision". bla bla.. nonsense. Moments like this make British jingoism a bit hard to bear. The player's foot touched the line and was thus in touch before the ball was touched down. Nothing to debate.
That's where Prince Harry's downward spiral began
Because of their english accents being so bad they never understood the words giving up and that is why SA won the world cup.
Let's go back to Victor Matfields' tackle on Mathew Tate - referee should have given a penalty to England for not rolling away and slowing Andy Gomersalls' pass out wide. Mark Cuetos' boot was always on the up - if it was white tackling green a try would have been awarded!

That’s pretty arrogant. There was still half to play. Even if his foot was in. Doesn’t mean that’s end of match. Boks woukd stepped it up and made another hiding like in the pool game. Perhaps ? Perhaps not. It was 2007 FFS. Get over it England aka WR
That is not a try 100%
Irrelevant, even if the try was allowed they would have lost.
