The Symbolic Themes of Flies in the Deathguard.
Ойын-сауық
An exploration is the symbolic meaning of flies throughout human history and their relevance to the Deathguard in Warhammer 40,000.
I tried to provide sources where applicable, some information doesn't have attributed authorship.

Excellent painting. Good to see Death Guard armor that, while corrupted, is not rusted to uselessness. On a side note, "Lords of Silence" is a great book for getting a look into the perspective of a Death Guard warband.

While I don't particularly care much for the painting aspect of this, it does provide a wonderful background for the subject matter. This is a cool way to do lore, it appeals to the miniature folks and the straight lore folks like myself. Looking forward to seeing your next video

Aersome video, your painting is inspiring and the commentary was interesting. I really love how unique the death guard marines are. I bought a Lord of Contagion because I think its hands down the coolest mini GW has made. I cant decide if I want to build a death guard army, or do 1k sons or orks instead 😅

Washington does have its fair share of fly problems, especially during the summer, so I'd say we would know a thing or two about them... Very cool breakdown though. I've never actually thought this deeply about then as part of the army beyond just being THERE
@thecozypainter

Yeah it was interesting to actually think about the design choices and their meaning rather than just aesthetic
The mythos is thousands of years old so I may be wrong, but Beelzebub may have been the Hebrew nomenclature for the Canaanite God "Ba'al". Ba'al was just some sort of agricultural God, not necessarily evil, similar to the Hebrew Yahweh. The Hebrews didn't like the competition and called Ba'al Beelzebub to slight him, as Lord of the Flies. I think it was them basically calling him shit because that's what flies like, and the Hebrews were not tolerant of other faiths, even being commanded to kill them in some instances.

Great vid man, I've been painting my own Death Guard as if they're covered in ice like the plagues & parasites that are preserved beneath glaciers during ice ages. Any tips for painting frozen armor/weapons or for doing snow/ice bases?

Unfortunately I've never done any snow themed minis yet, I don't have a lot of expertise in it. I know Darcy Bono had a cool tutorial on coolminiornot a few years back, try searching for that and see if it helps 🙂

Great video, thanks. Minor nitpick (flypick?) when you say that "flies in Egypt don't always have a positive connotation", and you cite Exodus. That text has nothing to do with Ancient Egyptian culture, but is a result of a much later Israelite origin myth.
@thecozypainter

Fair point!
@DnoFM
Ай бұрын
Since even ancient Egyptian history and culture are measured in thousands of years I would not use "much later" words. Old testament is also ancient, and it was still produced in ancient times (and definitely influenced by Egyptian mythology). It is just that Bible "ancient" comes in the later "ancient" Egypt, which was already thousands of years old at this point. So not "after", but rather "quite late" and maybe non representative of thousands of years before it in any way.
Where did you get the conversion bits for the miniature. I've been looking at doing something similar with a a troop holding a victim like that but haven't been able to find anything like it.

If your in the Seattle area, Waystone Speakeasy in Ballard has a pretty solid scene
Lord of the Flies by William Golding could also be an inspiration. In the novella the Lord of the Flies is a hog‘s head impaled on a spear enveloped by a cloud of flies. It symbolizes the boys‘ decent into savagery and their simultaneous loss of civilization/humanity. This could be related to the Death Guard‘s fall from humanity to chaos, which is a similar descent from civilization to savagery :)

An interesting analysis; I admit I don't remember much about Lord of the flies. I think that connection is spot on!
