The Sydney Ant Hill - A Modern Tragedy

Sydney has a problem: An addiction to endless growth.
It's gradually eroding the things that make areas on the fringes of our major cities such lovely places to live, such as the Hawkesbury district in north-west Sydney.
But what does that have to do with the obscure economic concept of 'The Tragedy of the Commons', buying milk at the local shops, and Australia's unprecedented levels of migration? I'm glad you asked.
The March edition of the Hawkesbury Post contains a text version of this article. This video version is intended as a richer, shareable version.

Absolutely spot on. Councillor, I live (Mortaged) on a duplex in Bligh Park - my share of the block is 333 sqm. Can you please shed some light on why my rates are $670 a qtr. My mother in law in Baulkham Hills - on a 800+ sqm block pays half this. Why are my rates this high?

Agree on most matters, especially developers & high density development. There is also the matter of causation of flooding due to development. The pattern of flooding changes as major developments in the basin are implemented. Can’t agree on raising the dam wall. That would result in the loss of huge tracts of native habitat & Aboriginal history. There is also the problem of mind boggling flooding if (when, going by current development standards) the wall fails. There are other solutions to water supply & flood mitigation issues.

I agree mostly with your sentiment here. Unfortunately without the record immigration, what else is going to prop up the ponzi scheme that is the economy in Australia? The new draft Hawkesbury-Nepean flood strategy is only going to make housing matters worse for both new arrivals & existing residents, with the proposal that all dwellings under 30M AHD be unsuitable for development/re-development! Ridiculous! That will decimate the land values of nearly all of Bligh Park, South Windsor, Riverstone, McGraths Hill not to mention make insurance near impossible to obtain. I look forward to your commentary on this issue also.
