Hard to believe that just 25 years ago, the Waterloo to Reading service was still the domain of first generation slam door Class 421s...not sure how these trains looked at toward the end of their careers, but in the mid-1980s they were already long in the tooth with old-fashioned compartmentalised seating arrangements, a far cry from these open-carriage 707 units!

This train saw 4 days of service with South West Trains, which means that there was just a 4-day period to hear the voice say South West Trains (I missed it).

I would like to see what the livery would look like if Stagecoach won, plus they were decent operators of SWT, so I'm sure they'd carry that success over to the new franchise. Also, Southeastern and Govia in general are the shittiest TOCs currently operating. They (Southeastern in particular) blame everybody else for their poor ratings. Please die Govia.

tsangpogorge I am not sure but I think South Western Railway (First&MTR) has said that it is too expensive to operate these units so they would be replaced by new units in 2019.

Saw 2 of these at Eastleigh on Saturday (12th August). 707006 & 707004. They ran from Brockenhurst to Wimbledon before coming back to Eastleigh and then back to Wimbledon.

Great catch - how did you know in advance? Oh and lucky you getting to visit the (rear) cab and film the guard closing the train doors! I would have liked to have been there with you but only found out when it was too late. This is a very good film. I saw it on District Dave - someone embedded it there. With the exception of the inability to walk between train units these trains are OK. I like the electronic noises they make when accelerating. As with other Siemens Desiro trains they are bright and airy with large picture windows. I also like the forward view on the TV monitors and would wish that TV screens were installed so that passengers could see it too. One reason why it would be so useful is that when the train stops at a red signal passengers will get to see and understand why the train has stopped (eh: the train in front is still at the station) - in the days of slam door trains I would stick my head out the window to do this but of course that option is no longer available. Knowing this information would help enhance the journey experience.

Thanks Simon, I found out last minute when my friend posted on Facebook the diagram for it. Like it says in the video, they should enter service again in September. I don't think forward/rear facing cameras need to be installed for passengers, because they should be informed of the reason behind the delay. I always try to explain it as best as I can.

3:34 I can see an obvious problem here. How are short sighted/partially sighted able to clearly see the coach number text at the top there whilst it's scrolling through the calling points? It's so small that it might as well not include it. Also nice seeing this video. I do want to aim for being a guard by the end of the year. Gateline is a start of course ;)

If 'First Shanghai' intend dropping these units, why were they given the franchise?Apparently, these things have no toilets, so why are they replacing some of the trains that do< also the 450's have 2 + 3 seating, these only have 2 + 2 seating; still this will be called improved customer care! Oh, I forgot, cattle have to stand in cattle trucks. Finally, what is the point of wheelchair spaces if they remove the guards who help their users to board and leave the train.

  • @MaverickHunterDaniel

One of the reasons I heard was they aren't suitable what with the lack of onboard toilets. If anything, it could be said that SWT were min-maxing with the specifications.

  • @tonyckw05

Probably, KCR (the old 'national rail' network in HK before merged with MTR 'underground' system) do have serval disputes with Siemens on signal system, they could carry on the grudge. Anyway, It's just a guess. Maybe MTR just want to enjoy some economies of scale from using the same stock as crossrail.

  • @bfapple

Talk about grudges is complete BS. Don't forget that for several years First was involved in train orders from Siemens (Classes 185, 360, 700 for example). Even if the Class 707s were suitable under the new franchise, it would make financial sense to have one larger suburban fleet, as is being done under Greater Anglia.

Woah..nothing the slightest bit styling about that train..dreary interior with abominably dingy lighting, reminding me of that putrid cross-river fleet from a year or so ago..those seat coverings're bound to make its restless passengers see RED :cringe: ..très 1970s, tellement étonnant..oh well.
