    I love how Arthur keeps telling the truth despite how many more "demerits" he keeps getting. And his wisdom in saying "Just because you can't understand something it doesn't mean it's wrong." Those words ought to be plastered everywhere across the world.

    That is a good character we see here. We see his valor through actions he believes in despite getting punished for it. We see here a young boy standing his ground in a reasonable way. I don't believe any Disney production will give such a well thought-out scene proving the quality of a man anymore for the next 20 years. I believe they'll go for what is popular to say in all mediums now : men are stupid / evil or goofballs...

    The crazy thing is that it took the Cook so long to discover what was going on in her own kitchen. Merlin and Wart were out of castle for at least few hours and Merlin's magic was still going the whole time. How on Earth did nobody at least notice all the bubbles coming out of the kitchen, let alone not hear all the commotion and sounds down there?

  • @girl1213

    @girl1213

    It just goes to show how much they were putting on Wart. Orphan abuse wasn't uncommon back then as free labor because they literally weren't paying for anything but being allowed to stay in the residence. Wart himself said he was lucky to just be a squire because he was an orphan (and clearly Ecter doesn't realize he's hosting the late King's son). While Ecter isn't a truly evil person, he is a conformist in the true sense of the word and can't appreciate Wart/Arthur's wisdom.

  • @miroslavtomic7038

    @miroslavtomic7038

    Жыл бұрын

    @@girl1213 I agree with everything you said, except one thing. But, before I say what it is, I just want to make something clear - you might be right about it, but we don't know if you are right or not. We don't know what, if any, relationship Arthur ever had with previous king. It is not even implied at any time that he was son or related in any way to the previous king. The way it is all presented, seems like some kind of divine intervention that chose him as the future king. Still, it would all make much more sense if Arthur was the son of previous king as the way it is all presented in both the book and this movie makes literally no sense at all. Aside from that, I do not view Sir Ector as the villain of this story. He is more of anti hero, along with Kay, who in the book is actually a heroic character, while in the movie he is just obnoxious idiot who is not really a true villain. I am not entirely sure there is a real villain in this movie, except for three totally minor and virtually unimportant villains who did what they did not because they are villains but because of their natural instincts - wolf, pike and hawk. Now, of course, many will now say that there is a villain in this movie, who doesn't even appear in the book or the folk tales, but was invented solely for this movie. I am talking, of course, about Madame Mim. However, to me Mim literally plays no real role in the overal plot of the movie, except enabling Merlin to prove his point which he already made clear against the pike. While I am a huge fan of Madame Mim and her entire duel against Merlin, they served absolutely no purpose except to show that Merlin is actually capable of doing something besides giving pointless lectures to everybody around him and just performing minor magic.

    The fact that Sir Ector replaced young Arthur with Hobbs must've been good news to Kay, judging by that grin on his face, and seeing how he hated Arthur. Hobbs was only mentioned, he was never seen, but he must've proven himself to be a much better squire than Arthur, that is until he got the mumps, thus young Arthur regained his position as Kay's squire by default.

    Another strange thing here is that there seems to be only four people living in the castle - Sir Ector, Kay, Wart and the Cook. Which totally doesn't make sense. For such a big castle, having just one servant doesn't make any sense. There is mention of another potential resident, young man named Hobbs who is mentioned twice in this movie, but he is not seen even once and obviously lives out of the castle. During middle ages, all castles had alot of different kinds of servants, like kitchen helpers (what is obviously what Wart was doing in this case) or stable boys and so on. Also, as an obvious nobleman, Sir Ector should also have at least some soldiers at his disposal in case of war, but obviously there are none around. When Kay is training for the tournament, literally only Sir Ector and Pelinore were with him, with Wart helping. If these were indeed days of anarchy and nothing but problems, where are the soldiers guarding the castle? I know that many see this as proof of huge crisis they were all experiencing and dark times they lived in, so it would be possible for a nobleman not have many people living with him as he wouldn't be able to pay and support them. But still, just one servant boy and one cook was virtually impossible in order to maintain such a huge castle. And, apart from Merlin's tower, castle still looked to be in good condition.

    This film has many scenes & moments that are very funny. Somehow, though, they just weren't enough to provide a smoothly coherent narrative. As good as the movie is technically, apparently it just wasn't memorable in the usual Disney sense. I loved it as a young child, the 1st Disney animated feature I ever saw in a theater & to me it was very memorable indeed. It's virtually never mentioned in discussions of the studio's work, though. By the early 60's, however, young moviegoing audiences no longer were gravitating quite so much towards fairy tales, this being the Space Age. They were looking for more modern or contemporary type stories. This factor accounts for "Stone's" somewhat schizophrenic nature---a medieval setting, albeit with plenty of magical moments well-suited to animation---but given an overall treatment that's immersed in the early 1960's, i.e., it provided lots of laughs but contained little heart or emotion with which to leave the theater. The potential majesty of its Arthurian setting & storyline was muted & downplayed, thus contributing to its fate of being unmemorable & subject to casual dismissal. Its emphasis on Americanized slapstick & bits of dialogue here & there somehow seems to cheapen it. "Sword's" animation nonetheless is superb, its artwork nice but not overly lush. The film remains a favorite of mine but it's a movie of parts rather than a whole, devoid of strong emotional impact. As a young child, I never could've imagined being able to see these scenes from "Sword" on my home computer anytime I chose, as such technology didn't exist in the 60's. Although the film didn't age well in the sense of it evolving into a traditional Disney "classic", it'll always have sentimental value to me!
