The Swedish Easter Witch and the Blåkulla Witch Trials (Swedish Folklore Explained)

In this video we explore the mysterious place known as Blåkulla (sometimes Blockula in English) from Swedish legends, said to be the home of the devil where witches held their Easter Sabbath on Maunday Thursday every year. We cover the modern day tradition of the Easter Witch (Påskkärring), the Great Noise Witch Trials (Det stora oväsendet) in which Blåkulla was mentioned many times, kidnapped children, witch's flying ointment, equipment and spells, the mysterious angels seen at Blåkulla, deals with the devil and the strange and disgusting tales of what went on at the Sabbath.

Hi everyone, I wanted to add something I forgot to mention in the video. The legends and stories told here originate from Sweden during a time in which it was heavily influenced by Christianity both socially and legally - which we need to take into account when analysing these tales of witches or pagans as they have obviously been heavily demonised. Nonetheless the Witch Trials and stories of Blåkulla are an important part of Swedish history and culture and are the root of the modern tradition of the Easter Witch. On that note - have a happy Easter and see you in the next video! 🐣💞

Yes I love finding and sharing the stories that don't have many sources in English, there's so much great information out there that's only in Norwegian/Swedish or Danish. Thankfully if you can read Norwegian the other two aren't so difficult 😅

We have a Xmas witch tradition in Sourh Italy.. Befana is said to visit children 12 days after Christmas on the 6th January, for the Epiphany. She is said to fly on her broomstick across the land, to seek out all the children. She enters their homes down the chimney. Deserving children are left a wonderful present by Befana (just in case they happen to be Jesus Christ). The gifts are often chocolates and sweets. Naughty children though, are left a lump of coal! La Befana is often depicted as covered in soot and flying on her broomstick. Families traditionally leave out a plate of food and a glass of wine for her. Italians believe she's able to sweep away the problems of the year with her broomstick, to make everything ready and welcoming for the year ahead.

Do children trick or treat on Ester in the U.K? Are Easter Witches a part of the Easter in the U.K, or in any other country outside of Scandinavia? I never thought about it until now ☺️ I have passed by the island Blå Jungfrun many many times by boat as I am from the Swedish Islands 😊 Thank you for your channal, lot’s of interesting content in here!
