i speak English as a second language. Dutch is my first. I watch learning videos in English because there are more of them. And every time you go 'its completely different' I prepare myself but then I'm surprised it's almost like dutch. Like the J for example. J in dutch or in Swedish is much alike

Swedish was influenced a lot by German and Dutch from the late 1300s to the 1600s. The 1600s spelling even looks Dutch, but it doesn't reflect the actual Swedish pronunciation. In the 1700s linguists and authors made great efforts to restore the original spelling or create one that sounded more like the Swedish of the 1700s, although generally speaking, if you speak Swedish with an exact (modern) spelling pronunciation, you'll come pretty close to how it sounded in the 1300s, except that u was [u] and o was [o] back then. Pronounce 'berg' with a hard g as in English and German and you have the older Old Swedish word. Pronounce h in 'hjälpa' somewhat like [x]. etc.

My friend asked me if I wanted to learn Swedish with him today and here I am getting an earful of your alphabet. I tried listening to other videos on KZread but you were by far the best. I'll also be teaching my young son what I learn from you. Thanks so much for posting this content.

Thank you so much for this video I started learning swedish with Duolingo and I was struggling because they throw you into vocabulary and sentences without teaching you the alphabet

Omg I know this is a relatively old video, but it really helped me a lot! I was stuck before even I started to learn Swedish, since there’s SO LITTLE materials online. I searched on Google and on Chinese internet and I couldn’t find any helpful stuff for beginner. So really I appreciate this so much, the production value is making me tear up 😭😭😭

A tip that I found helpful in learning to pronounce å was to overlook the a and focus on the circle/ring on top. That will remind you that it is pronounced more like the long o sound in English-especially if you listen to someone from the U.S. Midwest-“Minnesota O.” 😊 I was told that long ago å was written as aa as in paa svenska. Later the two a’s were stacked and eventually the tail on the top a was lost.

I love the humor and just hearing your pronunciation of such a beautiful language.

Great video! I am an English native speaker but I appreciate the extra thought put in for people who aren't native English speakers. So while some of it is redundant for me, it really shows great knowledge of the technicalities of language.

I have been watching so many videos on youtube trying to learn Swedish but you are great in explaing words in details in an easy way . Thank your for these videos in explaing the pronunciation of the letters ! I believe that understanding the pronunciation of letters is the most important part in order to start learning a language !

My journey to learning the language of my Grandfather begins today. I’m 68 so it’s about time. Wish I had learned more from my grandfather when I was young. He came from Sweden when he was 16 in 1906. Our old family farm is still a small town outside Gotebörg.

This video is very funny, it made me laugh, but at the same time I remember the words more. Thanks for teaching me the alphabet. Swedish belongs to the Germanic language family. I'm German and I think I can easily learn it. 16 or 17 letters are pronounced almost identically to German. I should start studying immediately. We have in German also the Ä and the Ö. And we have a Ü as well.
