Although they remain a tiny minority in France, evangelical Christians are growing in number. There were 50,000 evangelical churchgoers back in 1950, but there are nearly 650,000 today, according to the National Council of Evangelicals of France. In evangelical churches, emphasis is placed on personal conversion and a direct relationship with God. FRANCE 24 takes a closer look at their growing popularity.
A programme prepared by James Vasina, Yong Chim and Gaëlle Essoo.

    I left islam and converted to the Christian faith. My faith is based on the bible, so I do not care what kind of denomination a particular christian belongs to. We are all brothers and sisters in Christ. However, I have to admit that the evangelical churches are much more welcoming to new converts like me than the traditional churches. I know many muslims who left islam and became christians - they usually attend evangelical churches.

    @TheDark Nite I'm also one of the many ex Muslims who are now Christian (I'm non denominational). The number of Muslims leaving islam is growing with the rise and popularity of the internet. Also, i honestly think that if it weren't for Islams apostasy laws (the punishment is death) islam would have died off as a religion centuries ago. And if today, magically, the leading clerics of the Muslim world unanimously voted in favor to abolitish all apostasy laws, Muslims would leave Islam in droves.

    Protestantism was still being persecuted in France by Rome until the 1930s. With few exceptions it always had been, sometimes with extreme violence (St Bartholomew's Day Massacre). During the War many Protestant churches were persecuted under the Vatican supported Vichy govt. So 50,000 Protestants in the 1950s makes sense. With the growing secularization of Europe, a strong commitment to minority religious rights by the EU, and the exposure of age-old RC clerical sexual abuse and perversion, Protestantism is now reviving and claiming its rightful place in France. As well as in Ireland, Spain, and other countries as well.

    @Lauriston Calvert The original Christians were Jewish. Both Simon Peter and Paul preached at the synagogues. But, soon non-Jews began to believe in the resurrection. So, they were, eventually baptized. The entire dispute between the Nazarenes and the Judaizers was about non-Jews being told by one group that they had to submit to circumcision and they had to observe Jewish dietary laws. This dispute was going on in the earliest days of the Church. [Simon Peter and Paul were executed in Rome between 64 and 68 AD] Both the Pharisees and the Sadducees were opposed to the new sect led by Jesus' followers. The first Christian martyr was Stephen. Paul held the robes of those who stoned Stephen to death in Jerusalem. Jesus' own brother, called "James the Just" was stoned to death (in 62 AD … Other sources state that it was between 63-69AD) by those who were affiliated with the Temple.

    I think people are now more knowledgeable about the world. Since Christianity is very emotion-based, only about 20-30 % of a population are emotionally susceptible to it. We also have 20-30% of people who are rational in most populations. So Christianity can never really appeal to 100%.

    So, will France 24 ever do a piece entitled "The surprising growth of Traditional Catholicism in France"? Doubt it. France is the eldest daughter of the Church, France was made by the Catholic Church, French knights and foot soldiers fought the Arabs to restore the Holy Land to the Faith, France's sons and daughters proclaimed the gospel on every continent centuries before these evangelical churches were even thought of. France is the Faith and the Faith is France! France is not French without the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Faith. Ste. Jeanne d'Arc, Ora pro nobis! Deus Vult!

  • @andrewrolwes6034

    @andrewrolwes6034

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@rayma66 Yes, by extension He does, because there is an actual Church He founded, and that Church and the Catholic Church are one-in-the-same. Protestants tend not to be students of history and are therefor are unable to see this (otherwise they wouldn't be Protestant), but it is true to say that Jesus established a visible body of believers that can been seen and known by those who are not. The Church at this moment is afflicted by a terrible crisis, one of the worst in its history, and so its understandable that they would turn away from the Church and seek consolation among the Protestant groups whose faith is heart-felt and who are well meaning, but in turning away from the Church they turn away from the very Bride of Christ who enobled them and made them great -- spiritually. The spirit of Catholicism results in Notre Dame de Paris, the Cathedral of Chartres, it leads people to the most remote places on earth to proclaim the Gospel to all who would listen, often at the cost of their lives, it leads people to stand and fight for Christendom against those who would seek its destruction. The glorious people of France did all of this and more, but that spirit is now almost completely extinguished and forgotten, replaced by the unfulfilling secular values of "liberte, egalite, fraternite." The light of the Catholic faith is at this moment very dim and sadly, so many French people turn to something that is not theirs, such as this particularly Americanized form of Protestantism. I mean no ill will in saying this, but it is a simple observation that the void left by a Catholicism that has, in its human component, become incomprehensible is being filled by Islam, by radical secularity, and for some people by this form of Protestantism. I am hopeful though that this situation won't persist for ever.

  • @rayma66

    @rayma66

    @@andrewrolwes6034 In the beginning, the church as a whole was catholic, meaning universal. It's not the same thing as Roman Catholicism. Over time, the Roman Catholic church has become corrupt, introducing heresies and doctrines that have no biblical foundation (i.e. penance, worshipping Mary, praying to the saints, selling of indulgences, purgatory, works-based salvation, bowing down to relics [which may or may not have been legit] to reduce their time in purgatory, believing that they, at least in part, had to pay for their own sins, etc.). Hence, the need for the Protestant Reformation. Martin Luther did not seek to split the church or start a new denomination; rather, his goal was to reform the Roman Catholic Church. Like you, I mean no ill will toward you when saying this, but these things need to be acknowledged. Peace.
