You guys clickbaited the thumbnail on this video by trying to make it seem like you were talking about insects in outer space with that pic of flies on the helmet of an astronaut. Now I'll remember that this channel does that and be more likely to pass up on future videos. Clickbait me once, shame on you. If the BEAM (Bigelow Expandable Activity Module) on the ISS behaves itself, it could pave the way for much roomier spacestations :) (Currently it's just proving it can maintain its internal pressure, and its resilience to the extremes of space.)

As an added note, people living in excessively clean environments can really mess with immune systems as they have nothing to calibrate their immune responses in childhood. Reminds me of Mass Effect and the Quarians. Perpetually bound to their suits, or a simple bacterium can kill them in unsanitized environment.

You don't have to; they'll show up anyway. Fruit flies: medieval science's strongest evidence for spontaneous generation.

Tenth grade biology 1962-63: the aroma of the equipment closet full of test tubes of ripe banana pulp with fruit fly larvae inside, and ether used to anesthetize, sort, and count newly hatched adults. Fun with science!

The one dislike on the video was from someone with both spacephobia and muscaphobia. I can't help but wonder if any flies manage to escape and wander around the space station. What is flight like for them in microgravity?

Go to a swimming pool. Use two ping ping paddles and swim fins to swim around. That is pretty close. Now, swim in three dimensions.

They aren't going to be doing a lot of flying under those conditions. That alone probably isn't good for their hearts.

They aren't endurance flyers. They'll get just as many flits in the fruit fly lab as they would in your house, and the fact they only move a few inches at a time is... normal.

All I'm taking away from this is that Fungi is from space and that when reintroduced to space will start to react appropriately

I think that any species that live long enough in space, moon or mars would be a totally new species in a couple of genrerations, adapted to the new climate.

No, vertebrates aren't the only animal group with an adaptive immune system, specifically it has been shown that at least some bees have one and so more testing needs to be done to show which groups have adaptive immune responses

I want to see how the 10000th generation of fruit fly born in space adapts to life back on earth. In a lab of course, the Earth isn't ready for a space fruit fly invasion.

I have never found Fruit-flies to be a nuisance, not like those awful house-flies. I saw Hank smile at that Especially Fruitful joke.

I would think the studies on the heart health proteins could be very important for those with rare heart diseases as well. That medicine doesn't have to be specifically applicable to astronauts.

I just realised that in the future, most colonists on Mars will probably be able to see flies only in Martian zoos.

No chance we will be able to keep flies from stowing away on Mars trips, once that is happening regularly. And we will NEED them on Mars, so we will bring them anyway.

I was expecting something about flies free living on a station and some of those benefits.

Most alien designs like the greys. Look like their built for lower gravity . we were expecting most planets to be like and finding put cells at least bacteria divide faster in lower gravity looked really good for life. Especially mars and Eurupa . but funding out majority of planets are bigger then earth and so much note massive maybe moons are included but we need test how life cells adapted to increased gravity

I wish they would do more experiments trying to emulate ecosystems in space.

Okay, but wings could be a great way to get around in microgravity as long as you're not in a vacuum. You're already flying, it's just a better way to move. Theres not much room to fly in on the ISS yet, but maybe on eventual larger bases

@@francoislacombe9071 yes, for the most part. But there might be areas that are specifically kept low g for ease of maintenance. You dont have to worry about dropping anything, and you could have essentially long vertical hallways. Or maybe just for fun? People still like having fun. It could even be a sport

So now I'm wondering if gravity affects protein folding?

I'd be really curious to see how 100's of generations of these flies would "adapt" to a life in space if they even make it that far. As humans will likely get to that point eventually, living on a spaceship for their entire life or on a planet that isn't Earth.

Considering the 2 week life span, this is not super out of the question. Perhaps that is going on already? I really don't know but it might be very useful studying evolution and the changes that occur.

Maybe I'm alone in this but it seems wiser to invest an equal amount of attention to creating spacecrafts that are as vivacious and biodiverse as the attention we spend on sterilizing vessels. Launching bioreactor ships packed with algae, fungus, vascular plants, microbes, and insects may very well turn into the healthiest and most efficient way to sustain astronauts. Basically a space garden that sustains air and water quality and food/medicine that comes directly from autotrophs just should make sense as a venue to explore.

It sound like they forgot to adjust for the variable of beneficial bacteria to the study, seems like a major flaw that could make this study less useful for what they were trying to achieve, but will be a good control for when they perfect the study

The fly does propulse itself using the gas around it. Maybe it would just be disoriented. I was thinking more how freaked out they must be during liftoff, little fly brain doesn't know wtf is going on lmao

There should be two front panels and two back panels, so they can alternate, vertical horizontal vertical horizontal, all the way around. If not, then the designer made this shirt to intentionally mess with people with OCD/COD. 😉

A suggestion. Knowing how bad weightlessness is on the Human body, why don't we have Rotating space stations?
