The Supersonic Submarine - New Secret US Army Development?

Is the United States Army really developing a supersonic submarines? How would a supersonic submarine even work? In today's educational video we're taking a look at The Supersonic Submarines - New Secret US Army Development?
Submarines haunt the dreams of sailors around the world. Secretive, stealthy, and able to strike from out of nowhere, they remain the greatest threat to surface ships. Thankfully, submarines are limited in just how fast they can move, typically with a top speed of 29 mph (46 kmh), which is well short of a typical destroyer's top speed of 40 mph (64 kmh). Lagging behind their potential prey, submarines must typically intercept their targets or lurk in sea lanes and wait for an enemy to stumble into them. But what if subs could move much, much faster than they currently do? Hello and welcome to another episode of The Infographics Show- today we're taking a look at supersonic submarines- the US Navy's new Superweapon.

Do you agree that by moving an army acros the oceans so fast, a lot of wars could have been stopped before they even started? What else could a supersonic submarine do to make a difference in a war?

I'm not sure how deployment time would stop wars. If anything it would make them more likely. The only thing that has protected the United States is being bordered by large bodies of water, and most other countries not having a Blue water navy or the logistics to maintain a sustained campaign. This kind of speed also would obviously negate the whole idea of stealth. Sound travels very well in water. Submarines can go plenty fast already (well over 40kts), they chose not to due to cavitation making tons of noise.

Stupid idea, An army, organizationally, is somewhere between 100,000 and 150,000 people. Too big for even the largest surface ships. Not to mention their equipment and supplies. Despite what you see in the movies submarines are not roomy vessels. Supersonic noise would alert everybody in the world to it's exact speed, course, and depth, practically handing them a firing solution. Current sized submarines would not be able to transport enough troops to effectively deter hostilities. Also I suspect the energy requirements would outstrip any possibly naval reactor. If rocket powered, where are you going to store the fuel? How much? How are you going to purge the combustion chamber and plumbing of seawater before firing? A cryogenic tank up aganist a submarine hull might make the hull too brittle to withstand the depths. Also you made an error when you stated that any control surface inserted into the water surrounding the bubble would immediately result in the loss of the platform, thats exactly how the Soviets controlled their supersonic torpedo. A really stupid idea!

One thing they can do to reduce drag is dimple the hull of the sub/ship! Another is add a Ceramic or Teflon Coating to the ships/subs hulls! Add Control surfaces to the front of the sub will greatly increase maneuverability! Design ports from which rocket thrust can be directed outwards to change the direction of the sub similar to the nose of the Space Shuttles! If you had a Nuke Powered Sub you could insulate the inner hull and then electrify the outer hull to generate this bubble field it would not work as well as a chemical engine when it comes to speed but would last as long as the power does! Major Problem is with this Bubble Field Sonar becomes useless so you would need a GPS connection all the time that ran down to the ship via cable to keep track of location, speed and direction!

wanderingbufoon wouldn’t generate a tsunami, especially the deeper it went. Tsunamis are caused by large volumes of water being displaced (moved) by equally large volumes of solid mass. Speed is a factor sure, but only with large, blunt objects like meteors or landslides. With a superCav sub, speed and bubble combine to cut the water like butter. Insanely loud, as ^^he said. But surprisingly smooth.

Moving troops and equipment on a the scale needed to fight a war involving superpowers is not feasible. Making a sub large enough to load helicopters and tanks on it and that same sub still be capable of traveling at supersonic speeds is a pipe dream. Even if you could do it, making large amounts of those subs would be insanely cost prohibitive. The next 6 gen fighter the US is supposedly building is rumored to cost 300 million/plane. And Russia is threatened by USA and has to spend more by percent of GDP. In the past NATO has been moving it's bases closer and closer to Russia, even though they agreed not to do that... USA propaganda in my country constantly works in order to make people question our government and many do. In USA people don't even care that their oligarchs and corrupt government was complicit in the starvation of 85 000 Yemen children, and USA still supports the Saudis! To remind you Obama is the one who began supporting them in Yemen! So both republicans and democrats are to blame for supporting such a horrendous government as Saudi's! @Joseph Stalin Facts are this is BS, not practical to make a sub that is for military use that would work this way. Subs don't need speed they need logistical support from planes and satellites and stealth and high speed missiles and torpedoes. The subs the US navy already has aren't exactly obsolete either and in my opinion are probably the most destructive and most problematic point of concern for other nations, mostly the Nuclear subs that can stay submerged for months and carry dozens of Trident 2 multi nuclear warhead armed missile that are just out in the oceans somewhere always ready to receive the order to fire the MIRV and spread across the earth where the target is a momentary state that is similar to that of a star. Maybe a stealth weapon that first travels supersonic in the ocean that would basically fire from say Alaska at a target across the ocean and then drop the first stage and emerge from the shore of the target with a hyper-sonic speed and then begin a rocket phase and accelerate again and spread into like 6 nuclear devices and take out an entire shoreline and partially inland military assets almost as if it was launched from a missile silo that first boosted the missiles speed massively before it ever exits the silo like a mile off the cost and have an unknown origin if the weapon wasn't claimed by anyone.. Anyway the US has already made some insane weapons decades ago, such as the Nuclear rocket ICBM thing. The US built all kinds of nuclear technologies if the idea could be weaponized it was tested.. The actual facts are conflicts between major power today would be un winnable and self destructive if the fight a direct conflict between say Russia or the US or China. None of these nations would ever 'surrender' and all could go all out nuclear retaliation if any one was pushed into a corner and had no other options. No missile defense system is effective and capable of dealing with any of these power simply firing everything at each other as it would overwhelm and 'defensive' platforms. So basically the rest of the world gets to sit around and get fought over indirectly by these powers and wait to be made Russia or China if the US ever falls from power and no longer could project both nuclear and normal military power around the world because the only reason Russia and China don't try to conquer the earth is because the US would fight on behalf of a bunch of people that hate the US that are ignorant and think they would be sovereign nations despite having no military capability that could deal with the two ambitious communist totalitarian atheist governments. Governments should be kept in check by the concept of GOD preventing any man or argument from allowing those temporary in power from ever being able to strip the god given rights of individuals people. Even if you don't believe in God, act like one exists and make it the basis of your system of LAW and solidify the principles by the word of God not by the word of man. There is a reason beyond simply being religious that God symbolism is part of the US government and legal system. People who want God removed from everything don't understand it's function and what would be changed if it is not the word of god that set principles into positions that no Man could ever provide valid reasoning and argue to change or defy.

Otherwise, interesting speculations are presented, but the challenges to be overcome are, I think, much more significant than stated.

If maneuverable *supersonic* submarines was a viable technology, the only reason why they wouldn't be excellent offensive weapons is that they would have a very hard time with real time communication and sensing. Being noisy is a non-issue when you're not using staying underwater to avoid detection but for physical protection. I think they would be next to invulnerable at least until ASW adapts, and I think that would be an even much harder task than the submarines themselves.

The biggest problem is not steering - it is navigation, which is why the torpedoes were never any good.

Well you're wrong on that one. Super cavitation is achieved solely by the shape of the nose cone. When moving through water at appropriate speeds the shape of the nose cone creates areas of high and low pressure. Water "boils" in these low pressure areas to create that gas bubble

I really like this channel, but I feel like most of the dialogue is filler. I often find my self impatient with the videos, wanting just to get back to the information I'm wanting to learn about in the first place. If these videos were more condensed, that would make them way more enjoyable, at least for me...

Will likely never happen. Rocket Sea Ships can probably be technically done easier (imagine Battleships/Carriers cruising at monster speeds) yet we don't see a rush to build those

Would sonar work when it's going that fast? Cause if not then there may be a risk of running into things. Or if it does work can it turn out of the way quickly enough?

Not used for combat? I disagree, for big subs it's impractical for combat and stealth, but now we could start making smaller subs that are the Navy's answer to an F-15 in the water. Basically small fighter jet subs.

We already can put soldiers anywhere in the world in a few hours we use things called airplanes like the C17 and C130. There’s no stealth advantage due to the noise generated, it would make highly valuable assets extremely vulnerable, and the subs would be able to carry far less cargo. I can’t see any practical purpose for that technology outside of torpedos
