The Supersleeper Project

See it run • Let's go for a ride in...
Step by step process of my Subaru powered VW bug engine conversion and restoration.
I chose a 1973 Super Beetle for this project for a few reasons. First, the flat windshield standard Beetle is way more popular and has been restored, modified, slammed or patinaed probably thousands of times. It seems the Super is the car nobody wants. The '73 is the first bug to come with, IMO, the sexy curved front windshield. The '74s and later had (again, IMO) the less desirable bulbus 5 mph bumpers. The Super's wider trunk is a better fit for a wider radiator. The US Supers had built-in louvers for optional A/C which works very well to get air flow to the radiator. Strut front suspension just works better and gives a better ride quality. All my projects are 1974 or older to be smog exempt here in California. Finally, my older brother Jerry (RIP) had a '73 SB years ago and I thought it was probably the slowest car on the planet. So I rectified that problem. But what about the ridiculous elephant foot taillights? Well, I got used to them and hopefully, nobody will slam into the back of me because they couldn't see my brake lights.

The roll cage does give it away a little for sure, but it was necessary. I could have contoured the rear diagonal stays but that gives up strength integrity ( they also tie into the frame horns). Of the three colors to paint the cage, blue, black or white, satin black seemed to make the bar disappear the most, which was the idea.

At 1m24s the statement about converting the transmission to a 2WD unit was masterful understatement. That could be it's own video! Nicole's interview brought out a few more details about the build including: fuel surge tank, rewelding stock wheels to accommodate the 275/50R15 rear tires, using an original intact dash, and the hidden gauges. looks so sweet, and i bet it will be a lot of fun! i built a rover metro gta 16v vvc, later rebodied into a 1.1s shell, kept the 1.1s trim and badges. So it looked just like a standard basic metro, even kept the choke lead in the dash, so people thought it was very basic at a glance. I remember some clio driver having eyes like plates, when the car just walked away from him. not sure if he was going to take the piss just cause he had his lass in the car at the time. Another lad in a 1.2 corsa tried to sit up the arse, looked like he sucked on a lemon when the metro just walked away from him. So sleepers are very fun for this sort of thing.

The attention for detail is unreal. Bravo! What a work of functioning art and engineering. I'm 50 and have been in and around custom cars, resto cars, bikes of all sorts. In 31yrs of being a autobody technician and collision painter, along with countless side custom work, this Beetle is superbly done. I've always worked with my hands. I've always had a good imagination. There were seldom issues that I couldn't figure out.........you spent 2yrs and most likely 100,000hrs on your creation. Well done. God bless.

The finished product blew me away! Keeping the Peashooter exhaust is an awesome idea, and really adds to the sleeper-ness of the build. Can't wait to see what you do next!!

I just found John's channel after a couple years of watching rat rod builders and "will it run?" videos and I'm knocked on my ass by his meticulous work. A multitude of skills are exhibited, and he probably has other talents that are not shown. Thanks for sharing your work.

Oh, my god! How amazing! 1977 I bought my first Beetle and it was from 1967 and later I restored a beetle from 1958 but this I would never be able to do that like this man! I am speechless. Many greetings from Austria 🇦🇹🏔⛷🍺🥨🛶🌻🐺 Europe!

Meticulous work,, great video documentation. I, and I'm sure many other people, have always wanted a Beetle sleeper. Watching the video was a vicarious experience. I was in Uncle Sam's Canoe Club (Navy) back in the '60's on a submarine in Charleston, SC. A guy on the base had a VW sleeper. He front mounted a small block Chevy and had to move the driver's seat back over a foot.

Amazing work. The sleeper route makes all of that exceptional engineering and physical labor worthwhile, because it could have made lots of cars fast, but the sneaky factor of a sleeper is priceless, and valuable when putting money on contests of speed! BRAVO!
