I refused to believe it was even him, at first!

The animation is gorgeous and ethereal, it doesn't feel like Illuminations' normal style. After seeing so much heavy expectations, I don't think this will be a let down. Jack Black is already doing a KILLER Bowser and Chris Pratt is tolerable. Though I do spot a hint of Brooklyn or New York accent in there. Can't wait to see the full trailer next!

@@cradica While it certainly still has some of their character style, especially in Mario's design, which I don't really like, it certainly is much higher-quality animation. I imagine the budget for this movie was much, much higher than Illumination's other films. Nintendo probably gave them money to have better animation.

I guess that Mario will be an Italian plumber living in New York that gets transported into the mushroom kingdom, because it seems like that could be the case. You see him probably having been dispensed from that brick built pipeline thing that might be the connection to the normal world, also that accent would make 100% sense and could transition to the one we know through the movie. +he just seems confused about everything there

I wonder if there will be more power stars scattered across the Mushroom Kingdom? Maybe at some point after coming to the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario starts to help Toad and presumably Peach to get the stars before Bowser.

The thing I love in this trailler is how much personallity they gave to bowser which we not see a lot in the game

Bowser has a lot of great personality in the rpg games, especially in bowsers inside story where hes pretty much the main character

This is one of those times when that line is actually appropriate since this is supposed to be Mario and Luigi's origin story. This is the first time the brothers have been to the Mushroom Kingdom, and seeing a world made up completely of mushrooms and pipes is going to be really weird compared to the hustling and bustling city that lived in before as plumbers.

It’s not an official backstory. Its a movie based on the games. That’s like saying that the sonic movie is somehow related to the games canon.

The designs are really cool to me, like the way bowsers green isnt just on his head but blends into his body? Super cool, and the visuals are super cool as well

With a musical score and visuals THIS *BEAUTIFUL,* I’d be HYPED to see what they could do with Zelda, or even something like Kirby or EarthBound! This trailer exceeded ALL expectations, even for Jack Black’s Bowser voice, which I already KNEW was going to be great!

I am a diehard fan for the series, and I own all of the CDS for the games, a Lucas amiibo (I still need to get my hands on a Ness one), and a copy of Mother 1+2.and Mother 3 for my GBA SP! It’s an absolute DREAM of mine to see Mother 3 localized, and I have a little more hope now that the other 2 games are on Switch, and I CRIED tears of PURE JOY when that happened! I know James Rolfe, The Angry Video Game Nerd, along with RogersBase and MANY others like Toby Fox, would be VERY excited to see a movie happen!

I think Mario’s voice is just something we’ll have to get used to. I doubt he’s not putting in the effort, it’s more like they’re just going for a different direction for his voice. I mean, from what VERY little we heard of Luigi, it sounds just like Charlie Day’s normal voice and I’m not hearing any complaints about that.

But the fact that it’s still him has people on board with the new direction he’s taking the voice. People are so fixated on who the VA actually is. Out of all the possible choices for Mario, Chris, at least to me, had proven to be one of the better choices for this role.

THE WAY SCOOB SCREWED OVER MATHEW AND REPLACED HIM WITH ANOTHER ACTOR THAT JUST TWEEKED HIS VOICE A LITTLE AND SAID LIKE ALOT WAS A TRAVISTY! Mathew IS Shaggy and it was SUPER lame that they did him like that. WILL WAS NOT A GOOD VOICE ACTOR, he just does his own voice and that's it. Example, he is good on The great north(they seriously just cast him as every tall skinny guy that is cowerdly) but he is no where close to being the VA that Jenny Slade is! Every one of her characters have something that sets them apart(Still so dumb they made her stop doing Missy is BIGMOUTH).

Well, here's what I think Chris is doing for Mario's voice. Instead of the typical "Let's a go!" that we all know and love. Chris might be doing a voice that may be more nostalgic then you think. When mario is seen following toad to the mushroom kingdom, the tone in his voice sounds slightly different. It almost sounds (in my opinion) like a stereotypical Brooklyn/Italian accent. The type of accent you would hear when thinking of classic New York phrases like "Hey I'm walking here" or something like that. I believe in the Super Mario bros Super show, mario had that kind of accent. Maybe Chris tried the classic voice himself, but failed at doing it, so he tried the second best option of doing Mario's voice from the TV series. It could honestly work in my opinion, at least that's what I think. If anyone disagrees, that's ok. All I know is that I think I'm actually going to enjoy this movie, no matter what mario sounds like.

I feel he’s probably gonna give Mario his italian accent at the end of the film, or like a similar situation of the scoob film which is also an origin story of the mystery gang, where fred just has his ascot with him and decides to wear it at the end of the film, it’s probably gonna be the same as Mario where Mario might eat a spaghetti dish served by toad and we hear Chris Pratt imitate Charles game Mario saying “that’s a spicy meat-a-ball” (but idk, or something like that)

Toad’s voice is INCREDIBLE. Hearing a normal dude voice instead of a high pitched weasel voice is actually amazing in my book. Actual normal voice! Yes!

Also loved toads voice, which I was kinda concerned about since they have pretty high pitched voices and it would definitely be annoying to hear after a while but they seemly were able to avoid that while giving them a voice that fits. I say they and them because I do not know if they all have the same voice and I'd be curious to see how other toads will sound like.

I REALLY like what they did here, the looks are great and I love how Illumination actually seems to be trying with this one, either that or Nintendo has them on strict guidelines to follow. It’ll be nice to get a proper origin story for Mario and Chris’s voice does seem like something you’d have to get used to, but aside from that the fact Bowser is taken as a threat and not just a jokey character is also good for the movie, gives me Super Mario Galaxy vibes with him being perceived as a threat. All they need to do now is keep their promise of this being a movie that anyone can enjoy and i really do think they can stick the landing on this one…

Oh you can definitely tell that Nintendo REALLY watched over their shoulders the entire way - it's obvious because if they hadn't, everything would feel off-brand, it'd feel way too off-model, there'd be pop-culture references and jokes 3 seconds in, "this is the night" would be playing - or whatever that song is that keeps being played in those animated movie trailers - but no - it's clear that Nintendo made SURE they weren't going to mess with the aesthetic and that's a good thing. Nintendo is VERY well known for being very strict about licensing their character rights and exactly how those characters can be portrayed, so it feels authentic for that reason. Except for Chris Pratt. But I'll give it a chance because everything else looks great. Maybe they're going somewhere with this Chris Pratt voice thing - if you google it, Charles Martinett - the voice of Mario in the games - is listed in the cast, but it doesnt say who he plays - so there should be a surprise cameo in there for people.

Here's the thing as much as people ask "why isn't Charles Martinet voicing Mario!?" I honestly think a whole movie with Charles voicing Mario in his usual style would get grating really fast, while Charles's Mario voice works in short bursts I think for a whole movie with presumably a decent amount of dialogue for Mario it would get old fast, there's a reason Mario rarely speaks more than three words

To ask for better then this when we had nothing but a bad live action movie prior is pretty selfish if you ask me. Visually I have no complaints and most of the Voice actors are good. I neither like or hate Chris Pratt's Mario so far because we only got two lines from him. One breathless line and one generic "Mushroom Kingdom here we come" neither of those lines do any justice to what Pratt could be capable of.

Yeah, illumination and their movies annoy the hell out of me, so I was a little worried. But this looks neat! Very excited

I remember watching Vailskibum in 2015 when he was doing Gravity Falls theories and his voice sounded like a fax machine. Back after a long while, and I'm glad to hear he's got more life in his recordings, even if tonality isn't always something someone can control. Good job.

I think this is the most Effort illumination has put into its animation, it was never bad but this is Stellar!

It looks good for sure. But I never thought any of Illumination’s animations were bad per say. Sing 2 is arguably my favorite one BTW . The animation and film itself is just fantastic

I love how you can see bowser's hair is swaying when he commands the penguins to open their gate. I also love how the penguins look, with the eyes and beak looking super clean and the fur looking pretty realistic while maintaining its cartoonish look.

If I could say something, I think we’re jumping to conclusions on Chris Pratt’s Mario voice. He only had like two lines that were whispered. Sure it did have that distinct Pratt voice, but I could actually kinda hear a faint emphasis of an Italian accent. I think Chris really will at least sound decent as Mario with the Italian accent. It just probably won’t be as strong so that we can actually take the character a little more seriously and not giggle at every word he says in his iconic Italian voice. Let’s just wait and see. I’m sure they’ll show more Mario lines in the next trailer. Edit: A lot of people are suggesting it could be a Brooklyn accent which now that I’m rewatching the trailer could also be very likely. I just assumed Italian because Mario’s most iconic quotes in the games are said in with an Italian feel to it.

I vaguely heard an accent from Chris in the teaser, but we still don't have enough dialog to really determine how good his performance is. Fingers crossed that the first full blow trailer will show everyone in action and we get a good sample of voices

Hot take: I think Chris Pratt's voice is what Nintendo originally wanted Mario to sound like from the beginning. He sounds like a realistic Italian plumber from New York. I was one of the most critical when Chis Pratt was announced. But I heard a ting of the more typical Mario in there. Let's be honest if we had to hear 2 hours of the funny Italian accent it would be a little grating especially since it looks like they want to make Mario a more fleshed out deep character in the movie. I've loved Mario for decades but even I admit in the games he is a little one-note.

Charles Martinet is a talented and versitile actor and would have more variation to his performance in a movie as opposed to a video game. The games are one note by design. The characters have to be super uppity and chearful all the time to make people feel happy and want to play them more. No one want to play a game about a depressed plumber who is delusional and constantly inflicting self harm. Chris Pratt is just bad for the role. Flat out.

The trailer looks so good, and I liked the fact that they added in the penguins from Mario 64 as a nod to the older games. And I personally don't mind Chris Pratt's voice in the trailer. I can understand why people are still not on board with his voice, and don't get me wrong, I adore Mario's iconic voice as much as the next person, but I do like that Pratt is giving his own flair to Mario rather than trying too hard to imitate Martinet's Mario voice.

Everything in this trailer was freaking amazing! From the designs to the visuals to the voices, it will surely be a great movie. This movie will be up there with both sonic movies as one of the best video game movies of all time.

I don’t know what I was excepting but I certainly was not expecting the animation to look so good! And Jack Black’s Bowser sounds so good! I’m very excited for this movie

Kinda got a first-generation Italian in Manhattan kind of vibe from me. Like someone who visits Italy multiple times a year for family events and speaks fluent enough Italian to converse, but who doesn't live there all the time.

I think the year-long wait for this was totally worth it! The animation is staying true to the games, with some differences here and there, and I think the voice acting is on point! I don't mind Mario's voice at all, and you can hear a little bit of an accent when he follows Toad to the Mushroom Kingdom, showing that Pratt may have really put some effort into the voice as he promised. People are being too judgy about Mario's voice right now, he literally only had 2 lines in the trailer!

Chris Pratt might not be too bad honestly. The scene where they pan out to the Mushroom Kingdom, Chris Pratt gives a slight Brooklyn accent which gives me hope.

Sing 2 is a close 2nd but yeah this one does look impressive.

I’m already super hype about this, to be honest Chris voice as Mario can be surprising even though winners can’t be choosers. I legitimately love the effort that they had put into this cgi film, similar to the sonic franchise. They did a phenomenal job with this, I hope this film can also come with 3d glasses because it would be amazing to actually live in the experience.

Mario's voice sounds nice, I cannot imagine a high pitch voice of Mario in a movie, seems to work for only in games though

Also, didn't the original Mario games start in like city setting like the new york city setting? so they might be trying to just do it as a throw back to the original.

For me, Chris Pratt as Mario is just fine. He dosent need to change his voice unless we decide him to. edit: Now that I listen to chris's voice more, it fits him just nice.

You said the other actors did a good job at copying the original voices, but Mario didn’t start out as an Italian he was a new-Yorker and therefore Chris party is actually doing a good job, game theory sums it up pretty well.

I’m just curious as to how they will handle Mario and Luigi’s sibling thing. From what we saw in the trailer, Luigi seems to already be in the Mushroom Kingdom because he was getting chased by a bunch of Dry Bones. Is it that perhaps Mario is looking for Luigi and ended up in the Mushroom Kingdom as a result? That would be cool.

Keep in mind, not everything in the trailer is in order. Maybe Mario had already entered the Mushroom Kingdom way before Luigi was chased by Dry Bones.

The animation is amazing and the Bowser invasion scene is cool. Jack Black nailed it especially with his first line and Keegan’s Toad sounds accurate as well but Chris Pratt’s Mario yeah he just mostly sounds like himself.

Jack Black as Bowser was legit perfect, Chris Pratt as Mario…needs an overhaul! Hopefully Luigi, Yoshi and Princess Peach got good voice actors who know what they’re doing!

I've got complete faith in this one. Making it a Pixar-esque animated adventure was absolutely the right decision and like you said it's gorgeous to look at. Chris Pratt's voice, I'll grant you, is not what I picture when I think of Mario. However, it is what I picture a plumber from the Bronx to sound like -- you know, just an average joe. So, I think it'll work just fine.

Who else is hyped for this movie?? It's gonna be incredible!!

Yeah but i still would of liked a more mario like voice, its not horrible but it feels out of place and unlike the sonic movie where you can ignore it now the main character has a kinda unmario voice.

My favorite thing about this trailer is the fact that The super show intro plays for a brief moment right before Mario gets blasted out "the secret warp he found working on the drain" to finally lend the princess a hand in this cool new mushroom land, and seeing Luigi hypes me for whats next!

@@jasminesidney8174 yes, but those notes are used in the Super Show intro theme, and that version is similar to the one we saw in the trailer.

I personally love Chris's Mario's voice, nobody has seemed to notice it's heavily similar to the Brooklyn-type accent from Super Show, which I would rather listen to for a whole movie. I mean, Charles is great as Mario, but I feel like listening to the nearly-incomprehensible, more goofy video game voice for a whole movie would quickly become annoying and would lose it's novelty FAST.

They are working with the original voice actor for Mario and Luigi. I don't think there was enough voice lines in that trailer for us to get a real feel for Chris Pratts performance quite yet. But I'm so very excited for this movie too!

I expected jack black to speak like he normally would, but he never disappoints.

Honestly, I can't wait for this movie. The visuals, the voices, BOWSER, and everything looks insanely promising And Chris Pratt DOES have a bit of an accent, if you listen to the last line, it sounds like the ones from the 90s cartoons a bit

Was one of the first 10,000 people to see the release of the trailer. Genuinely impressed by the level of quality in the animation and how fitting the voices are for most characters. There still isn't much to see how good the movie will turn out though, but if it means we get to see more of gigachad Jack Black Bowser, then I'm all for it.

I think his voice for Mario is fine. If you listen to when Mario says “Here we go” it’s in a Brooklyn/NY accent which fits for the Mario lore. Before he was in the mushroom kingdom he and his brother lived in a city similar to Brooklyn or NYC but ended up in mushroom kingdom.

Chris’s Pratt’s voice for Mario does actually sound like him and still it’s only a teaser and that’s 1 minute of Mario’s voice maybe his Mario voice will kick in in the actual movie?

Ok, I was expecting less until they did this. It looks so good! Oh my god! The animation, the voice acting, Illumination and Nintendo are prefect for eachother.

I can see why Mario with an Italian voice wouldn't work for the movie, it would look pretty goofy and over the top. Mario here sounds like he has a bit of a brookyln accent, maybe once we hear him more we would get more brooklyn energy than what the teaser shown. Although I was hoping for Toad to have Keegan's normal voice. I think that would've worked well

I heard Chris's little "I'm walkin' heah!" accent at the end of the thingie. I think the voice is just fine.

Even though Chris is using his normal voice his voice _(to me personally-)_ oddly fits! Probably not the best voice for Mario but it seems it can make a good fit! It really depends what Nintendo plans for him to say, only the future will tell

I love how Luigi is dealing with Dry Bones, just like how he usually deals with ghosts

I've never been interested in Mario, but this animation quality is stunning. I may have to watch the movie after all! 😅

I REALLY hope this movie turns out to be as good as the trailer makes it look! I was a little nervous going into the trailer but they really knocked it out of the park! I had faith in Jack Black as Bowser from the beginning, and I could totally picture Charlie Day voicing Luigi. I can hardly wait for this film and hope I can go see it in theatres with some friends!

Same here. So we can finally see a faithful adaptation, especially after that disastrous 1993 film

I honestly think Mario’s voice is fitting for the big screen. There’s a lot of people complaining that it’s not Italian, but imagine having to hear a high pitched Italian voice the whole movie. It’ll lack personality. Its completely perfect for one liners in games like “Here we Go!” And “Lets’a Go!”, but for a movie, I think Chris Pratts voice was a good fit. Plus he has a Brooklyn accent, which fits surprisingly well, since other times he was also voiced with that accent, like the the Super Mario show. I’m super hyped for the movie and cannot wait! The trailer was awesome, and ofc Bowser was so badass!

Chris definitely shocked me! I wasn't expecting his voice to fit the character!

I hope this Super Mario movie is as good as, Super Hornio Brothers.

I really like the style. It’s a good mix of realism and cartoon style.

Mario's new voice will take some time to get used to, but everything else looks really promising.

After the huge success of Sonic Movie 2, my second favorite game series is joining the big screen. With this two most iconic characters movies, maybe there will be a lot more video game movies in the future.

The second I heard bowser’s voice the first thought that I had was “bro this dude sounds like a fricken kung fu panda villain” I didn’t even know he was po’s voice actor!! Bowser’s voice sold me on the movie

I wasn’t sold on Jack Black as Bowser. Until today I couldn’t stop imagining him sounding like Lenny from shark tale. But after hearing him say open the gates, no doubt he’s going to be amazing as bowser!

The Animation, details, voices and personalities are Fantastic! And I knew that Jack Black was perfect to voice Bowser, he sounded so Awesome. And we're all definitely going to get used to Chris Pratt Mario. But still, really cannot wait to watch this Movie when it comes out, it's gonna be fun.

Hey let’s be real I don’t think the Normal Mario voice would work for a full length movie and Chris’s Pratt’s voice honestly fits this full length animated Mario quite well!

People are acting like all Martinez is capable of is loud "Let's a Go!"s, which is just not true--if you watch footage of him doing his Mario voice in interviews, he's not speaking in ALL CAPS there. It would work just fine. And if they wanted a more Italian/New York guy accent, Danny Devito is right there... Chris Pratt was just a bad casting decision. If they wanted only celebrity voice actors, fine, but they had far better options to choose from. Pratt, while I like him, can really only play himself in various fonts. He works well as a goofy guy or semi-serious action protagonist, but he always acts like himself in some way. Or a generic action star--which Mario is not, at least not in the way a movie star is, due to his iconic Italian/Brooklyn accent. Pratt was only a good fit as a voice actor for Emmett in The Lego Movie because that character was literally meant to be an NPC who starts to gain a personality of his own--and that works with Pratt because he could be himself with no obligations to a certain character. And in the trailer, he doesn't even do a good Martinez or Brooklyn style voice!!! Ugh. Out of all the celebrities to voice Mario characters in the movie, Pratt really feels like he was chosen out of recognizability, to be a name on the poster. All the celebrites are, sure, but Pratt being chosen for Mario seems like his name on the poster was the ONLY, SOLE reason.

This teaser made me feel MUCH better about this movie I was hoping to see more of Charlie Day as Luigi, from the few stuff I've seen of the guy he seems pretty fitting for the role. The little screams he did already work for the character Mario is the only thing that feels weird, both for the voice and the design (though it's probably more the voice, getting used to the design is pretty easy). Chris Pratt did a good job as Emmet from The Lego Movie, so I'm hoping he put the same effort here

Honestly….when I heard the list for the voices I was like oh I dunno about some of these, but I am really digging Jack Black’s Bowser and Keegan’s Toad they sound brilliant, Chris didn’t sound any different then what he normally is but honestly you could hear him try a slight Brooklyn like tone when he says “Mushroom Kingdom here we come” so it’s possible it’s going to be a mix of the cartoon and live action movie Mario. But for Illumination standards such a good step up, this all looks very very promising.

I feel like we still need to hear more of his voice, when he said “Mushroom Kingdom here we come!” He had a bit of a New York accent, I feel like people will warm up to it once we hear more

I honestly think Chris Pratts voice for Mario works surprisingly well. Is it different, sure, but think about how Mario’s normal voice is kinda a really bad stereotype for Italians and could offend some audiences. Then think about how this is a origin story and Mario’s origin takes place in a sort of New York environment, and Chris’s Mario voice has a bit of New York in it. I honestly couldn’t be happier with a voice chance

It's a ridiculous italian stereotype. But as an Italian American, I appreciate it. He literally dreams of pasta. Being a lazy stereotype is pretty much his only consistent character trait. Other than that what is Mario? Not much more to him. Without being a stereotype he loses his character.

Drop the "offend this demographic" card. You don't speak for italians. The only problem with giving mario his known accent would be because Chris Pratt wouldn't have the ability to do a decent accent, so he's going for a more Brooklyn accent. No one would bat an eye had the character been done with the accent we're more familiar with. Only a few weirdos on Twitter would whine about it

Still wanting to hear Seth Rogen’s take on DK. Out of the entire cast, I think his voice is gonna totally fit the character. Even hearing his voice alone.

people don’t seem to realize that the high-pitched cheery italian voice mario is known for just doesn’t work in a movie. it limits the actor’s ability to express much emotion for more tense moments. i think they did the right thing changing it up with chris pratt’s accent.

Mario was the guy that started the video game movie genre, it's about time that he gets a movie that FINALLY does him justice.
