Great series. But whoever is responsible for the audio needs to be fired. The background music is always too loud. And in this story, the translator could barely be heard.

Unwatchable 30 seconds in. I'll read subtitles for hours without issue. This was just impossible to watch and try to listen to the jumbled audio. The sound engineer should be left in the bottom of the sea.

@@bobgillis1137 Australian. Dad served in new guinea at Sanananda, Buna and Gona with the 2/7th. I served for ten years but was never in a conflict.

It is beyond heartbreaking to witness Mr Schwarz's grief and pain in facing U455. Excellent documentory. I had only few issues with the audio as I'm fluent in english and german and understand french ok, so I could concentrate on any one person and language of my choice. It is a sad and gripping story. Thank You!

Yes. I'm sure he went through a mix of "there but for the grace of God....", and complete and utter sadness at the thought that his best friend and other shipmates were just beyond that wall of metal. And to know that it was caused by "friendly fire" must have been so devastating. Such a brave man to be willing to go down to see the boat.

You can use subtitles using your phone

The Audio is Appalling, was looking forward to this but stopped it. Don't have translater speaking over person with same volume as original. Couldnt hear either. Music is meant to compliment the audio not drown it out.

I enjoyed this documentary. My grandpa survived the bombing of pearl harbor and continued on fighting in the war as a gunner on destroyer battleships. Watching this reminded me of him, he always said the ones that didn't make it home were the real heroes. He was a great man and I miss him dearly.

My grandfather was German American and served in the navy in WWII, I’m pretty sure he would shed no tears for a fascist enemy.

Tenth patrol and loss On 5 April 1944, U-455 was lost with all hands, sunk by a mine. The German navy did not provide the sub's captain with their latest minefield maps and U-455 was driven straight into a German minefield. A mine exploded near the stern section - possibly during a turn - ripping off about 10 m (33 ft) of the boat's stern, leaving the crew without any chance of survival. The boat was likely at periscope depth, since the observation mast was deployed. The wreck is lying about 120 m (390 ft) depth 2 nmi (3.7 km; 2.3 mi) off Portofino, Italy, vertically with her fore section up. Her diesel mechanic Luke Brauer, who had served on-board up to patrol 9 but transferred to the naval academy before her last mission, confirmed her identity during a sea exploration in 2008. Her last transmission was on 2 April 1944, four days prior to her disappearance, when she radioed-in while on patrol off the coast of Algiers.[2

@@GrumpyIan After over 70 years of salt water corrosion, finding any "air" inside is highly doubtful. Additionally the batteries underneath the interior deck plates have probably leaked and would have released chlorine gas on contact with the water.

@@markfryer9880 not only that, the shockwave from the explosion, would have killed those who were not in the stern section, and if the shockwave didnt get them, the wall of water rusing in would slam crew against any bulkhead. it would have been a quick ending for the crew of U455. may they rest in peace.

This should have been a superb documentary. As it is, the extremely poor quality of the audio makes it almost impossible to follow. The sound editor, for reasons known only to himself (or herself) elected to record and playback the volume of French, Italian, and German speakers, _and_ their English translator, not only simultaneously, but at the exact same audio output levels. You literally cannot hear what any speaker is saying, either in his native language, or via the translation, as all comments are a garbled cacophony of unrecognizable noise because they're speaking at the same volume at the same time through most of the interview segments. The closed caption function is also useless. It cannot record what it cannot hear. It would be very nice if someone would re-edit the film to make the comments comprehensible.

its a shame really. where listening is an important part of ones practice, this video is a great demonstration for students of what not to do

One's heart goes out to that submariner in the end. He fought with, what are for me, enemy forces, but one can still see elementary humanity in him that we may see in ourselves. Any one of us could find ourselves in his position for any number of reasons. God rest his comrades in arms!

Yes, these submariners had some balls to climb into those steel coffins. Not so much courage to submerge and sink an unarmed oil tanker. They could have taken it out with a deck gun; like shooting a fish in a barrel. No, these men deserved to die. Unfortunate they were slave to a war criminal worse than Putin.

@@LynxStarAuto Exactly- men fighting for their country. BUT submariners respected their foes. I met and worked with a Ex German submariner When I worked in RSA. He was 17 year old when he served on U Boats Great guy- dead now- but despite me being English- we were good friends.

A Fine documentary, ruined by dueling German voices and English voices all at the same volume! This made so much of the dialogue difficult to understand. It is surprising that the editing crew missed this.

I had to completely CUT the audio and only rely on the subtitles ! - I was really moved by the emotion shown by the only survivor of the crew who was able the pay a tribute to his fellow crew mates when he dove to the wreck of "his" mini submarine. Very moving sequence ! - Germany built about 1000 submarines during the war. About 900 did not return to their base. Assuming a crew of +/- 70 men, leaves about 63 000 men lying at the bottom of the seas in their "steel coffin". To be added to this figure are the +/- 2 000 crew members of each of the 4 surface "capital ships" (Bismarck, Tirpitz, Scharnhorst, Gneisenau...) plus the countless smaller "naval coffins"... Probably similar figures for the British, the French, the American, not counting the allies of the Germans, mainly Italians. And let us not forget the Soviets, the number of which is unknown, probably one order of magnitude higher ! ... And all of that what for ? Because of the "SUPER EGO" of a certain "Adolf" ? Coupled to the stupidity and/or cowardice of the French government ? Only one man stood up against the general madness : [Sir] Winston Churchill !

As a US Navy submarine veteran, my heart goes out to the Submariner who saw the final resting place of his brothers. Doesn't matter to me if at the time he and his brothers were the "enemy," they were and are still to this day human beings and Submariners. If it were possible, I would consider it an honor to meet him or any Submariner, regardless of what side they were on. RIP fellow Submarine Brothers.

It had to be evewn more heartbreaking for him to know it was the failure of his own country to warn the captain of U-455 of the presence of that minefield. To be killed by your own country....I just cannot imagine what this man had to be feeling. These men were not Nazis. They were young men, just like ours, that were called up to serve and were doing their duty as they were told to do.

Usual level of inaccuracies, “the US Navy’s secret weapon, the convoy” the Royal Navy had been escorting in convoys since November 1940. “the U Boats couldn’t approach convoys” most shipping sunk by u boats in the Atlantic and Mediterranean were sunk whilst in convoy. Most of the rest of the world knows that WW11 had started long before 11 December 1941. The U Boat crews were utterly ruthless, but incredibly brave.

My Dad and his brother were in the Navy before Pearl. His brother was at Pearl and he was off the coast of Newfoundland when war broke out. They both ended up in the Pacific Theater on tin cans.

That last scene with the crew member looking upon his old boat. Obviously such an emotional time for him. Just watching the look on his face was very moving. And I have a feeling that if you had taken him to see one of the wrecks that his boat was responsible for, a wreck where many lives were lost, he would have been equally emotional. Very sad what war does to people, plunging them into a world they would never have even thought of going. No matter what nationality, these wrecks all contain the remains of someone's son, someone's father, someone's husband or partner. One day the human race will hopefully grow up and put a stop to war. But sadly, when the worlds resources start to diminish, I can see just the opposite happening. I doubt we will ever learn.

Voiceovers are at same volume as the people talking. Even in the 40's clips the translated with text, Make up your minds, lowers the voices on the people you translate or translate with text.

I can understand the pain in that man's face. Visiting the graves of fallen buddies is always an emotional experience for me. RIP Andre and Derek KIA 5.5.1980, South African Border War.

one of the best documentaries on timeline i have seen. Regardless if you are German, American, British or any nationality. You can't help but be reminded of the human cost of war. The men on that U-boat died at the hands of their own military secrets. Couldn't help but shed a tear for the man diving down to see what happened to his fellow seamen.

Good point. It is actually the mixing that is really poor. During translations, the native speakers voice is way too loud as compared to the English translator. And the music is mixed way too high, making it difficult to hear the narration. It wasn’t poorly recorded, just poorly mixed

Really disappointing that the subtitle dubbing has been so badly done that it makes following it in either language almost impossible...

Great documentary and very moving to see Mr. Schwartz get to return to see the fate of his comrades. As someone who's claustrophobic the bravery of those men to go down in a narrow steel tube deep under the ocean in the darkness dealing with the possibility of death by being crushed, drowned or blown apart seem superhuman to me. The fellowship they form with those around might be stronger than family. The depth of pain Mr. Schwartz must feel seeing the final fate of someone who he had been so close to and the feeling that he wasn't there at the end with his comrades must be deep even after 70 years.

Just seeing his boat down would be emotional enough then add to the fact of loosing people he knew and was closely attached to I should imagine it's very overwhelming!

Taking a u-boat through the straits of Gibraltar using the tidal current was used in the excellent book “Das Boot” - a must read for anyone interested in submarine warfare.

It was possible to get them into the Mediterranean, but not to get them out again. Doenitz opposed sending boats there, on the grounds that every one sent was one lost to the Tonnage War.

I enjoyed it both as English dubbed and in German with English subtitles. I'm watching the current season of the series German with English subtitles., and frankly I find the movie and the series, each, to stand well on their on.

It was very heartbreaking indeed to see how grief stricken he was especially knowing his best friend died in that U boat. They were very brave men and all I can say is, RIP and Salute and Respect for the 40000 who lost their young lives.

Love this. One thing, very small. "Underwater Grenade" is not a term. "Depth Charge" is what you are looking for.

During 2:50's translation, i find it that objectively true that adding subtitles to the film would make for a better viewing experience. Thank you for the content!

interesting video but you guys need to sort out the sound .... when you dub one voice over another its best to turn down the volume of the voice in the background.... otherwise you end with the proplem you had here... two voices talking over eachother... making hearing anything almost impossible

My heart breaks for him in the end. War must be such a cruel thing to have lived through. To see where your friends died, i can't imagine how that must feel. Poor man.

At like 2 mins 40, having a translator without lowering the volume of original audio makes it sound crazy. Other than that, amazing programme.

Timeline ALWAYS has audio issues. The sound on this was atrocious!! I've complained many times on comments about the audio. IT AIN'T DIFFICULT TO SORT IT OUT!! But whoever is (ir)responsible for the preparation of this doc. for KZread downloading knows sweet f**k all about what they're doing and, basically, should be fired! Excellent documentary marred by some individual's incompetence.

The audio mix on this during the dubbed part is atrocious. I can't believe they let it leave the shop as a deliverable. What a shame.

brilliant... and the U boat -455 crew member was taken down to pay his last respects to his entombed comrades ..he said he remembers there names . whoever made this 1hr video deserves a medal. thank you for this emotional trip back in history and the German Gentleman for the rest of his life knows now what happened to his crew mates.

The two crewmen that went to officer training before U455 went off to its fate didn't talk about (at least in what was included in the released product) what they were told/knew about its going missing, either through official channels or through press releases or scuttlebutt and what have you, or if they were ever told anything officially. I wonder just how much they actually knew or if they were even aware it went MIA or if they were lied to in an effort to maintain morale within the ranks or whatever. The grief that Mr. Swartz tried to control, but was quickly overwhelmed by, suggests he wasn't aware that the U-boat was sunk with the entire crew aboard. Although, to be fair, maybe seeing the shipwreck in person with the fresh information that it appeared to have been struck by a mine in a German laid mine field, was a sight and emotion that he wasn't as prepared to see and handle as he thought he was. Also, I thought it was odd that they only brought Mr. Swartz to the final resting place and not the other guy. You'd think they would have mentioned that he had declined, or he wasn't able to make the trip, for whatever reason, if he had indeed declined the invitation. It kind of feels like he wasn't even offered the opportunity to visit the shipwreck, like they had offered Mr. Swartz. Despite an otherwise enjoyable and informative documentary, I find myself focusing on these two unresolved items far more than the overall project. Is anyone else having a similar reaction?

I don't care what side you were on the men on any U-Boat were brave men. After spending most of my life at Sea on an Ocean Research Vessel I have the greatest respect for the sea and the men who sailed her both on and under. I enjoyed the video but the audio sucked, the sound guy should be FIRED.

Made it to 3 minutes in.... another 50 minutes with atrocious audio is not something I care to do. Hire a decent sound engineer type.

Well done, excellent documentary. Very touching at the end. When he said genau/enough I almost had a tier in my eye, you could see how much he was suffering. I can't, well we all can't even imagine what went through his mind the moment he saw his comrade's underwater grave. The fact he said he remembered many more names, he probably remembered the jokes, banter between seamen, the good times in port and the bad times.

When the old German veteran said, "genug," I was feeling what he felt and it brought me to tears. I am 65 years old so, I never experienced any of WWII nor Korea nor Vietnam but, I believe that the time is near for Our Lord Jesus to return and end the wars and this present Earth. Very impressive research!

This reminds me of a really great book called Shadow Divers. I listened to it a few years ago on audible. I would definitely recommend it to anyone that likes stories about lost Uboats and the dangers of exploring deep wrecks in order to identify them.

Good documentry please think about the background music it’s sometimes spoils the talking

This is an incredible documentary with one very serious issue. I can't believe with the quality of equipment we have these days that you let the audio portion of the presentation slip by. It really destroys your effort and ultimately does not serve well those who perished in this submarine. I will turn on the CC.

Well done all involved in he making of this documentary, and thank you for sharing, can't help but feel the pain especially at the end, we're all human and proves war is never justified. My thoughts are with those poor lost souls, may you never be forgotten 🙏 rip

Who the heck is your audio mixer? The Italian spoken word should just be audio beneath the english narration. Both are competing at the same level.

really great episode! only one technical issue: before posting to youtube maybe remix the levels on the dubs. on air i'm sure it's fine but when compressed for youtube the audio levels need more separation, as they are too close in volume.

"My best friend is in there" is what did it for me. Truly a good reminder that "the other side" is comprised of regular people too.

If you have to spend eternity somewhere then this wreck is about as exquisitely beautiful and tranquil a place as it is possible to get. Amazing to think that there’s nearly enough buoyancy to float it even today. I hope that they are not tempted to do so.

The subject was interesting, but the audio was so awful I couldn't continue watching it.

Quite a moving scene at the end when the old German submariner pays a visit to the tomb of his comrades, who ended up sharing the same fate as their victims. Some conflicting feelings must have gone through the brain of this old man, who survived it all. I grew up in Port-Louis, a village in front of Lorient. I could see the submarine base from my bedroom. After the war, the submarine base was taken over by the French navy, and I could regularly see diesel submarines entering and exiting the bay of Lorient. As a kid, I used to jump from the top of the walls of the Citadel into the see at high tide (seen behind the speaker at 40:14). I also played in many of the blockhaus left behind by the Germans as part of the Atlantic wall.

This is a rough one, as a Soldier I understand this, but I can't imagine being brought back a ... Mass Grave of my brothers, and it's not even a "grave" it's virtually undisturbed battle spot. I have to give him credit, not sure how I could handle this. SAPPER

I don't know if anyone else felt the same way but the voiceovers were very difficult to hear because of the volume not being turned down enough on the original audio.

I can't lie... his line "my best friend is in there", broke me.. So sad.

Thank you for the great content - it is very exciting and touching. One notice for improvement - when the german or french is being translated in to english, the sound of the original should be reduced so it will be possible to here a translation

I thought this was a wonderful documentary. So full of information and history about the U-boat 455's career and end. The last five minutes of the show completely tore me to pieces. When I watch these stories now, I wonder how many of OUR (US) soldiers and sailors were just tally points on paper for some higher up. At heart, they loved their homeland, they loved their families and friends. Thank you for the very personal touch. Almost unbearable in its poignancy, but humanizing and de-mythologizing to the end.😪

I couldn’t stand the volume of the over dubbing. It made it unwatchable for me.

I'm so sorry for Mr. Schwarz who got to see the Uboat he served on under very difficult circumstances. War is never a happy event neither for opponents, allies, or even their own people. It is very sad to me to know that people died on all of these submarines. May God grant welcome them all with open and forgiving arms and may they and their families find the peace they seek. Rest in Peace.

From Europe to South America, how in the heck did they manage so much concrete for all the various buildings, fortifications, and gun housings? Is there a documentary out there covering this? The amount of product and time seems staggering.

For that old Submariner he would never believe his old Boat again in such a way and for his friends still entombed inside , really a moving end to a great vid .

Could have been a great documentary if it wasn't for the poorly done sound mixing. Hint, if you're adding English, turn down the French or German. When multiple languages run at the same volume, it just comes out like gibberish.

I've read that four out of five men who served in U-Boats, died in those U-Boats. Yet the Kriegsmarine never had problems crewing those boats. That speaks volumes as to the courage of those sailors.

@@mandywalkden-brown7250 they were pretty much volunteers... submarine crews were seen as super soldiers, elites, legends, a lot of naive young men full of testosterone see themself as untouchable, they had no shortage of recruits. only after usa joined war after pearl harbour they developed strong anti submarine tactics, before that there was not much what allies could do to counter submarines

Whoever did the audio edit Missed the Boat when it comes to balance.

This one brought me to tears, my brother was a submariner in our Navy in the 70's to 1981. I get it!

This is the best uboat/research videos I've seen. It must've been really expensive to produce. I would pick it any day over something on one of the commercial video services. It makes me wonder more.

An otherwise interesting documentary ruined by truly terrible audio mixing. Closed captions are riddled with errors, spelling mistakes and comical gaffes.

Excellent work on this documentary! Top notch research breathed life back into this dead sub at the bottom of the sea. Now these men can be remembered. Doesn't matter which side you were on. War is War...

Nice situational ethics touch. The crew of the u-boat left port with the intention of sinking ships and killing the crewmembers of those ships. My Great Uncle was Merchant Marine and he dealt with the deaths of his fellow crewmen and was in the cold water of the North Atlantic when his liberty ship sank. My Uncle was no threat to anyone. That is the difference.

I have a German ‘Soldbuch’ from U-455 belonging to Adam Muüller. You can actually see the book shown briefly in the program. No clue how it ended up in my hands from this program.
