The Sun Could Destroy the Earth in 2025

Geomagnetic storms pose a huge threat to humanity in the modern age. We are entering the most dangerous period for solar activity right now, The Solar Maximum. If we aren't prepared for a serious solar event, the Earth's energy grid could be destroyed. This will cost trillions of dollars to repair and leave some countries without power for years.

if this does happen, it seems we might loose connection to the voyagers, which then would be pretty catastrophic for the NASA team, as the voyagers are basically the lead of space exploration as of now, they might be lost to unknown causes in interstellar space, or other such scenarios, end up perfectly fine, which isn't likely, because if a carrington level event hits us, we'll loose power for years to come, who knows what'll happen.

Nothing to worry about. First the solar storms peak every 11 years. It's not unusual. Then a solar storm doesn't have the effects many of the click bait stories claim. It can't do anything to electronic devices or power plants. It's not like lightning. It's a tiny voltage difference of a minute fraction of a volt per meter. So the only way something can be damaged is if it is connected to very very long cables. The only effect is on step up / down transformers that are connected to cables tens or hundreds of kilometers long. These are the electricity sub stations you may see - which convert very high voltages from long distance cables into the lower voltages for domestic use. Even then those cables also have to run in the air above ground where there is resistive ground rock because you need a voltage difference to build up between the cable and the ground. If the ground below the cable is conductive (e.g. wet sedimentary rocks) there won't be any voltage difference between the cable and the ground because the weak magnetic fields from the solar storm will build up exactly the same voltages in both cable and the ground. The damage is caused by voltage differences between the cable and the ground in the step up / down transformers. It turns out that only a few places are actually vulnerable. The 1989 Quebec powercut was possible because of the resistive ground rock below Quebec as well as its high altitude. But since then they have made the step up / down transformers much more resilient and that powercut wouldn't happen again with modern transformers. The only ones at risk are old models or a new model that is near the end of its operating life and about to be replaced anyway. They make the transformers triply redundant in case one of them fails, so that even if a few of them fail in a Carrington type event - it would be an expensive bit of kit to replace, but the customer is likely to not even notice. In the USA most of the grid companies now sign up to an insurance scheme which keeps a stockpile of road-mibile transformers - it's really meant for hurricane damage and such-liek so that they can be up and running quickly after a hurricane - but it would also work for solar storms an dmean that they coudl replace the damaged transformers and be up and running quickly in the rare case where all three are damaged or to get back to normal levels of triple redundancy. The electricity grid is very resilient, a bit like the internet, if there is a cable or sequence of cables available to get the electricity from A to B then they can reconfigure to use it instead of the one they usually use. Expense would be similar to a hurricane after a Carrington style event but most likely no powercuts or just a few localized in the most vulnerable places. The powergrid companies would know where is most vulnerable in their network also there are a few hours of warning of a solar storm after it passes the SOHO satellite between Earth and the Sun, so they would be able to respond to put their equipment into a safer operating mode before it hits and we have longer term projections of solar storms, though less accurate, of the order of days to a week or so. debunkingdoomsday.quora.com/What-would-the-effects-be-of-a-major-solar-storm-Short-term-local-power-cuts-for-hours-not-widespread-blackout-for-mo As for the flares themseslves we can't have a superflare. We can't have a superflare. For a short time a few years ago some astronomers thought superflares were possible after they spotted them in a survey of stars that resemble our sun, only some of those stars and they didn't know what made a difference between the ones with and without superflares. They never thought they were likely for our sun, because we'd have seen the signs of them in the moon rocks, if there had been any in the last 4.5 billion years. Something that hasn't happened for 4.5 billion years would have to be very rare. But they now know that our sun can't do them. They now understand why some stars have them and others don't, and ours is the wrong kind of star to ever have them. It is to do with how fast it spins and for a superflare the polar region has to spin faster than the equatorial region (the sun isn't solid so different parts of it can spin at different rates). For our sun, it spins too slowly and the polar regions spin more slowly than the equatorial regions and its magnetic field isn't strong enough. So it can't do them. debunkingdoomsday.quora.com/Can-superflares-happen-on-our-sun-observation-and-modeling-combined-says-no-only-bright-flares-equivalent-to-our-sun

This is scary yes, we don’t like to believe it but we rely on electricity so much that even a day (24hrs) of the global power grid collapse would cause mass societal and economical collapse. Even if it’s just 24hrs, it would still cause mass panic across the world. Also I love your channel so much, it’s the perfect channel for nerds like me and space lovers. I don’t even want to be an astronomer (thats plan B xD) plan A is surgeon because I like biology a lot but also physics. Anyways, I love your channel so much. I think the COVID pandemic showed how the world can react and adapt to global threats to life and existence, but an event like this is much more sudden and fast moving than a pandemic. There would barely be time to nip to the shops to stock up on aluminium foil, and we would have to accept that people will die when an event like this occurs.

If the internet was destroyed, we would have to start all over again in life and go back to the older days when internet was either new so it was very limited or not at all, and we would need to use offline features and more paper, which wouldn’t be too bad in my opinion, considering how much we rely on internet in our everyday lives keeps increasing and is making everything being used less memorable from when I was younger when we used our brains more instead of the internet. Physical books also were often used and sent, and made it better to increase information being picked up. (never mind what I said compared to the video because there is still electricity being used but it is still important to remember internet and technology constantly being advanced in unnecessary ways)

Not many people know about this… and I think that’s the major problem. Everyone needs to be aware of this and we need to prepare, and start preparing quickly. As you say, if everyone follows these safety measures, and if everyone is warned soon enough, everyone will be fine… but if this doesn’t happen… we need to prepare for the worst. No one will know what is going on in the world… but when I think about it, It makes me feel better that it’s the whole world. If my internet was shut off for 5 years I couldn’t bear it… I would feel cut off from the world, but if everyone was, I mean, I would still feel cut off from the world. I guess this is kind of selfish, but I would feel better if everyone felt that way, y’know? I wonder what would happen to planes during that period, I would assume that if they haven’t been grounded, there would be big problems. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst, that’s what I say. I’m only young and something like this would absolutely freak me out. And I would hope that everyone follows these guides, pull out all electrical cables, wrap stuff in tin foil. This is a great video and has really got me thinking.. it kind of makes me paranoid though and I hate that feeling.

well I self is very concerned about this to be honest, but if this actually hit us, it hit us with the biggest flare you have seen, we have to be indoors and block all light source from the outside. Every technology in the world will actually get fried and we have to build new systems. There going to be years of blackouts, as the power of the sun is soo strong, some scientist actually have said that this is going to be worse than an ice age. Planes and helicopters have to take time to land and as there is soo many planes and helicopters in the world, there would be no time to land for everyone and there would be not enough spots for them. the Ozone layer of earth will be totally destroyed, thats the reason we can see this events, there layer gets thinner till theres is a hole. It slowly heals and now it can be completely destroyed. I am not trying to scare you or anything, but just be prepared. We may have to be locked down in bomb shelters for a long time.
