The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck - with Mark Manson | Know Thyself Podcast EP 45

Mark Manson, Author of "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck" explains why most self help is backwards, and how to actually improve your life and wellbeing.
He shares his perspective on life, death, success, and finding our purpose. Mark recounts how the surprising death of his friend shifted his view on life, and why it's important that we lean how to die before we die. He describes the challenges he faced after becoming 'an overnight success' and selling 10 million copies of his book - challenging the idea that success can make you happy. He uses 'The Paradox of Progress' to explain why the wealthiest countries are also the most unhappy. Mark also explains the fundamentals for building a healthy relationship, and how to use the context of the past to inspire gratitude for the present.

I love how human and open he is about self help authors not always taking their advice!! that alone helped me so much- knowing that even when you know what to do- you won’t always do it and that’s normal

Interesting comments on the paradox of progress…Why do the wealthy and abundant parts of countries/cities also have the highest suicide rates and highest levels of depression? When we solve the issue of physical abundance (when we do not worry about survival) we then ask who do we want to be? Live a heart based existence…enjoy the question. Go easy on yourself. Allow and surrender to what comes…

I was so pleasantly surprised by this conversation. It’s beautiful how the dialogue seems to flow effortlessly; at the same time, I recognize that this is a reflection of your interviewing skills. I haven’t (yet) read Mark Manson’s books, so I had no idea that his insights would be so life changing. Thank you both. 💞

Your fried Josh was your awaking. His death and just so you know his death was planned previously to him being born. His contract was up and he was there with you to lead you on your journey by leaving and going home. You have an amazing story and your journey isn’t done yet. Josh gave you the lead by him leaving you but he is always with you and you must remember that all this was planned.

Hi there, ever since I started watching your videos, I was able to tap so much into my consciousness and discover that I am Awareness and it all felt so good, but now my mind seems to be clamping down really hard, and it's like there's an entity in my head that's constantly over-reactive and causing all sorts of clenching or tightness in my body, it makes me unable to burp or fart or poop easily, it's amplifying the pain I feel from all sorts of things and feelings, and it's affecting my life really much. When I try to talk to this entity, I always get the same answers, it wants me to suffer, and the reason it is here is because of all the consciousness work that I did, and that it is killing it, so it wants me to stop, but I have already stopped for so long, almost weeks, but this entity is still here, and it's just making life harder and harder by the day, I'm like having constipation and bloating just from the fact that mind is so tight that it won't let me release, and my entire life is now centered around finding ways to burp and fart and poop. No matter how hard I try to make peace or be friends with it, it just stays silent, and gives me no answer, and whenever I even think about anything that's slightly triggering to it, like abiding in God consciousness, or meditating, or simply being jolted by sudden movements, and noises, it just goes absolutely nuts, and clenches up completely, making the top of my head feel like there's a clamp on it. I really need help on this, have you or anyone here encountered such a phenomenon before? And what would you guys recommend I do to put an end to this? Is there a way to come to peaceful terms with it? A way for it to just let go if I would stop the meditations? Do I just give it time to calm down? It seems worse and worse each day. Do I keep on practicing meditation regardless of how painful it is and maybe it will be gone forever? But it just feels worse and worse the more I do it, and it always comes back, and it feels wrong to be forcing things like this. I feel like my life is really going to end if I don't find any solutions, anyone who has any idea what's going on and what I should be doing, I would be so grateful to hear from you!

You are describing my life right now, I can't get my self to meditate im forcing myself to for 3 min every morning and it's nice actually at this point im seeing that I need to stop being so hard on myself the fact that im aware of the nurture and care my spirit soul mind need is a step forward everyday I work on taking little step that way and that's enough for me right now

@ 27:08 RE: higher prosperity leading to increased stats on suicide etc......This appears to not be true in countries where it is common to have a connection to the divine/ god. For instance in affluent countries in the Middle East such as Kuwait, Saudi Arabi etc.

You completely forget that in many countries suicide is still a great tabu or even illegal especially in the middle east. Much data is inaccurate and many suicides are not reported. It is true that highly developed countries with high stress and pressure and not religious like South Korea has high rate of suicide. Children there often have very long school days with extra training, saw a documentary about it, some children has like 10-12 hours school days. And take India that is considered very spiritual , here according to a World Health Organisation (WHO) report, India has the highest number of depressed individuals in the world. This means that one out of three individuals in India suffers from depression.
