The Subaru WRX's REV HANG Is Terrible!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

My Subaru WRX has the worst REV HANG, and it isn't the only one. The 2015+ WRX's all have the worst rev hang from 1st to 2nd gear. WRX rev hang comes from the stock tuning and mapping that from the factory, which is just crazy. In this video, I talk about, what rev hang is, how to avoid it and cope with it, and how to get rid of it.

I recently looked at 3 used WRX's with the manual transmission from MY16 to MY18, and the clutch was very heavy. Is this typical in this car? Having driven a Civic SI and VW GTI, this seemed a bit excessive. Along with the rev hang you mentioned, this seems to make for an unenjoyable daily driver.

in my experience with my '18 wrx it seems like the rev hang is not as bad when youre shifting at 3.5-4k rpms. i think the buck is bad when you do it at low speeds because then in second the rpms have to drop pretty low and the wrx in 2nd gear seems to lug quite a bit For example give a bit more gas right before you shift at the point and it should help. though i know what you mean about being in between speed bumps. i wish the car was more drivable in 2nd at low speeds

Being an owner of a '17 WRX 6 speed myself, the rev hang sucks. It sucks a lot more in lower RPM's, obviously. I also live in a townhouse riddled with speed bumps, so trying to get power in between is hard, so the jolting and "bunny hopping" happens sometimes. Once I turn onto a main road I'm usually pushing it to like 4500-5000 RPM's, so it isn't as noticable. Also, has anyone noticed it doesn't seem like I can get past 5500 RPM's before it just like stays there. Would a tune help me get closer to the actual redline?

Something louder than stock, quite on highway but can enjoy some noise when hitting the gas. I have looked at several videos for grimmspeed, so I decided to buy one and figure it out myself. I also realized my stock exhaust is rusted in less than one year with my car which is crazy. It seems like stock would not hold up? I’ll let you know how it sounds though.

  • @HelycopterEP

Unfortunately rev hang on this car is very prominent because for 1. It’s turbo charged (very high boost for the size of the engine too) and for 2. (Sort of related to #1) emissions. When you let off on the accel pedal, the A/F ratio becomes very lean for about a second or 2. This creates a very high NOx content and to eliminate this, Subaru and many manufactures added this rev hang. What it does is it holds the throttle open just for a bit to equalize the A/F ratio and get rid of these gasses. Boost pressure that still needs to be recirculated and used also contributes to this rev hang very bad and makes it prolong even more. Sorry, but a tune will help out a bit. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Over 2000 rpms it jerks too much and under 1900 feels sluggish. I drive manuals for over 10 years and when I got this with the rev hang I thought the gearbox was defect before I learned that rev hang existed. My 2020 Honda Civic Si Coupe has horrible rev hang too and it drives me nuts. Love the car but hate the rev hang. Thinking of upgrading to a Type R just to not have to deal with the rev hang anymore (heard those cars don't have the rev hang). Why do companies do this to newer cars? It doesn't help the car drive better in anyway. Just makes the car a pain in the ass and unenjoyable to drive. I'm trying to find a way to get rid of the rev hang (don't have a tuner and no stores where I live sell them) but no luck so far. I put in the Perrin shift stop (which just blocks the stick from going too far left), which was ok ish but honestly feels a bit weird too since now the stick moves much farther right from center by comparison. Still overall an improvement. For rev hang I flashed stage1 cobb, which I guess improves it a bit but also just gave up on waiting for revs to drop and now I smooth out the shift by just letting the clutch slip until the revs are matched. Probably sucks for clutch wear, but meh.

Had a 2018 wrx and fell in love with that thing but I agree that rev hang is absolutely trash. I say this because I upgraded to a 2019 STi and there is NONE and the shifts feel completely natural. I noticed the rev hang before but it wasn’t until I felt a transmission from wrx that was this good in the STi until I understood just how bad it really is. Trust me, get rid of it ANY WAY you can and you’ll feel like you have an entirely different car and for the better.

Folks, part of the problem is about the driving - normally everyone is used to pushing in the clutch and easing off the gas at the same time. Won't work with the stock FA20 WRX, the ECU map is not linear - therefore, the traditional footwork approach won't work. Just like you get the immediate boost spike as you roll on the throttle, releasing it slowly keeps it at higher than needed RPM. I've been driving my WRX'19 for 10K miles and this is how I deal with the rev hang: I try to give the car enough of the acceleration initial impulse off the start in 1st, then immediately - before I aggressively step on the clutch, I lift up my foot off the accelerator completely. Make sure the car doesn't loose the acceleration momentum. That split second when you lift off your foot off the gas first and THEN momentarily push in the clutch will be the key trick to master. The shifting got a LOT smoother. Plus, you have to wait for the synchronizers (don't force them) to equalize cogs speed and then as you shift, releasing the clutch quickly doesn't cause jerkiness.Try it. WRX has her own rhythm, which requires a great deal of synchronized and smooth drivers' inputs. Don't make the samurai do wrestling.

You think that's bad rev hang? Try driving an '07 Dodge Dakota with a manual transmission. It's the first year that they came out with electronic throttle control in those trucks, and you might as well completely forget about even trying to rev match the 1-2 or 2-3 shift in that thing. By the time the revs drop anywhere close to where they need to be, you've already lost all your momentum. The only way to shift it quickly is to slip the clutch on the bite point and force them to drop. Whoever decided that the simple mechanical throttle cable should be replaced by electronics ought to be hanged, drawn, and quartered. It's like someone said, "you know those guys that buy manual cars for the fun of it? How do we make it not fun so they buy the more expensive and less reliable automatics instead?"

Perhaps I could get used to it, but man I just wish I could put it into a sport mode or something so the throttle actual does what I tell it to. You pretty much have three options. Wait a long time between shifts to allow the revs to drop (sometimes 2 - 4 seconds). Slip the clutch a little more to smoothly bring the revs down. And finally, possibly void your warranty and install a tune that gets rid of it. It's a shame on an otherwise fantastic vehicle.
