hehehe, um you mean any wizard, warlock, cleric, druid, (and maybe bards idk) and most of the half casters (ranger, pally and whatever else is a half caster.) However sorcerers are and have always been a spontaneous caster they don't prepare spells at all. The pull from their pool of spells know whatever spell is needed at the time. 5E makes this even better cause they can take a level 1 spell and cast it at level 4 and enhance it with meta-magic. If you read through their spell casting rules you will not find a rule on their preparation of spells for this reason.

@Viktor Magnusson Yeah most of what made sorcerers special in past editions has been given to pretty much every caster class now. Before the Wizard needed to prepare his amount of fireballs or whatever for the day and when he was out of them he was out of them regardless of if he still had slots available. This was wonky so I'm not opposed to it being changed however a wizard can now prepare from his known spells and as long as it's prepared for the day he can cast it as many times as he wants as long as he has slots available that can be used for that spell. Metamagics were supposedly given only to Sorcs now but even that's not true as a lot of caster subclasses give metamagic or even stronger equivalents to their chosen genre of spell. Especially wizards getting very strong and most are always active metamagic like abilities, while also having their near infinite spell options, as well as more casts per day, and getting spells for free, and having the best options in magic items solely for their class. In all honesty Sorcs drew the short straw this edition as they have very little that makes them unique and aside from subclass flare they don't get all that much in the base class.

In old school D&D, good creatures were universally more powerful and more rare than their evil counterparts. It only makes sense to leave a gap for the 'good' players to make a difference. For some reason that has changed in modern D&D. It probably has something to do with it becoming more popular for the player's to be villains--not sure, though.

A few minor corrections/extra info on Inferno... Inferno is not actually a red dragon, he is a crossbreed between gold and red, which was never meant to happen. There two dragons are the most powerful of the chromatic and metallic dragons and he gained the power of both, although Tiamat personally made sure to have his parents murdered and the rest of the eggs destroyed. Bahamut then later personally came to teach him magic and he has devine based powers. Half his breath weapon deals quasi damage, meaning it's godly and cannot be resisted. He is also known to be one of the best magic users of teleportation and dimension based magic of his time, even impressing elminster when he hear of it. His main lair has over a dozen teleportation based traps that will just remove you from the lair if you don't know how to get through them. Also in his main lair has a lake of melted gold, that he uses illusions to make it look like it is so deep that he can swim in it, but it is actually only a few feet deep and actually teleports the rest of his body to his secret lair in another land... he just uses this to show off to anyone that enters his lair. He also is the first dragon to take adventurers to court for breaking and entering in his lair and wanted them sent to prison for attempted theft... yep... he is also a lawyer dragon...

In my world (Created as a hobby, still ongoing) the two thirteenth level spells are "Control" and "Obliterate". Control makes you the DM, Obliterate destroys the multiverse. Literally, if you cast Control, you get all of the files for the world, and if you cast Obliterate, I delete them. The material components for either is a little ball made of the essence of thousands of my equivalent of Greater Deities. The only time either was ever cast was when Perampas Tidak Bijaksana, the first mortal, tore off the hand of Pencipta Yang Bijaksana, the Creator, and used it as the material components for both Obliterate, on Pencipta, and control, on nothingness. That was how magic was created - from the essence of their corpses. Greater Deities in my world are people who embody a single concept entirely. For example, Vallin, the god of death, who can kill anyone instantly with no option for coming back ever. They are granted additional power by the essence of Pencipta and Perampas. You also must be one of these Deities to cast the spells. Not to mention, the orb is contained within a nation that is protected by dozens of these Deities, none of whom would ever cast the spells, nor can they. Because the final qualification to cast them? Every other being in all of existence must agree, as well as all other beings who have ever existed. Perampas and Pencipta were the only two beings when the spells were cast. Pencipta was brainwashed into accepting it. (Yes, the omnipotent Creator of everything was beaten down by Perampas.)

@@kevynhansyn2902 for me, psionics could easily be what monks draw on, if you really think about it. It could be a more spiritual mind form of chi. And considering stuff like meditation, levitation by windpower, and mind reading powers primarily come from east and has been a eastern practice, makes you wonder why not call psionics a branch of chi? 🤷‍♂️🤔🤨 But that's the thing. Divine dragons (which WAS what the gold was called at ons point), which is another word back in the day for metallics, drew on the more celestial/angelic/godly type of magic source, and arcane dragons (aka chromatics) drew on the more primordial/demonic/devilish/(evil)godly type of magic. The gems were just in between and not really one or the other. A true balance between law/order and chaos/mayhem. But the psionics part has been harmed too hard, as well as a bit on the neutral abuse. People thinking they are ALL types of neutral, when really, the are neutral in morals, like metallics are GOOD in morals, and chromatics are BAD in morals, so they aren't neutral like neutral evil or neutral good, but neutral in lawful neutral, and chaotic neutral. But mainly neutral neutral, if you catch my drift.

How the hell do mundane medieval cities like Baldurs gate or waterdeep coexist with nuke level creatures, Archmages, Avatars and evil gods? The world map and various cultures looks too.... normal for how powerful everything is. You would expect there to either be extremely advanced magical empires or a chaotic world.

Funny how most mainstream fantasy settings are essentially post-post-apocalypses (there was once a great world spanning civilization and now it is in ruins). I think the only thing that can really explain the current status quo is a massive ancient secret society which somehow preserves the status quo for some reason. Maybe they discovered something analogous to the reapers and want to keep technology and magic relatively low lest they attract the attention of some kind of cosmic horror. Maybe they gave Karsus the inspiration for his epic-spell, knowing what would happen. Perhaps they social engineered the spellplague. Is it possible to have such far reaching changes to the vanilla setting for tabletop rpgs? I only know cRPGs. Not familiar with how this sort of game works.

But I said sardior because he is one of the original 1e dragon gods, WAY before Io was a thing, and all these either grimderp, cringe lolz, mystery saping dragon gods came to play, like hlal, the two wingless drake styled platinum dragons (seriously, there should only be ONE platinum dragon), Null (that's not even a actual god name, that's just lazy writing, and the grimderp name and wannabe edgelord.), Zorquan, and task. ALL those gods are either unnecessary, not needed, poorly executed, fight with certain worlds lore, or just don't make sense and take away from the mystery. Like we don't need task to explain why dragons hoard. The hoarding thing should be a mystery, it adds to the whole idea that dragons may or may NOT have a reason to have the stuff they do. Hlal is your radical extremist sjw who thinks they know what they are talking about but actually have no clue, Tamara and Lendys are just bland original pieces of bahamut's idea of justice. Garyx could easily be absorbed into sardior, for the fire and renewal part (minus the destruction), so no need for garyx anyhow. And finally, Azharul, Kalzareinad, and Kereska are apparently gods of magic, the arcane kind, you know, THE THING MYSTRA CONTROLS?!?! Why would there be a god of magic, when all arcane magic (not counting sorcerers) comes from her? These magic dragons would bring chaos to it, and plus mystra would cuck them, so these magic dragons shouldn't exist. The 2e dragon gods I am so far ok with are Asgorath and Zotha. The rest don't exist to me in forgotten realms setting. Plus 5e seems to have done away with all the dragon gods except Io/asgorath, bahamut, tiamat, and sardior, which in my opinion, is a GOOD thing.

Force dragons have 75 str 10 dex 61 con 62 int 63 wis 62 cha as stats. They are invisible all the time like greater invisibility and they blink all the time which makes it really hard to hit them. Even if you can see through greater incisibility and pass through 102 ac you still miss %50 of you attacks against a force dragon. They also immune any damage lesser than epic damage and even epic damage will deal 25 less with every hit. Also they have a 60d12 breath weapon that deal force damage which can’t be affected from any damage reduction effect. And that’s the best part THEY ARE IMMUNE TO FORCE DAMAGE!!!! Time Dragons are beyond even that(although in different ways) they reach CR 90 as a Great Wyrm. They have at will time stop with 1 round pauses between cast, permanent haste, immunity to slow, Immunity go any spell that last longer than instantaneous unless it’s cast on it by itself, an Aura that imposed slow on everything within 40ft of it without a saving throw, the ability to have more actions in one turn twice a day, Two Breath Weapons: one a cone that ages everything within it and deals con damage; the other a line that sends people forward in time(effectively removing them from combat for the time between, Advantage on rolls(which wasn’t really a thing in 3.x, but yet they had it) and to kick it all off, they can actively Time travel! With the right preparation they can defeat anything by just escaping and then going back and doubling up on the enemy with themself.

Homebrew the monsters using Fizbans: (bloat stats and damage as high as you feel like for your campaign's purposes). Raulothim: suggest he is an ancient emerald dragon, but his true power comes from his animated staffs. Take the animated staff from rim of the frost maiden and have his fight be a dragon plus 5+ staffs casting fireballs. Will already be a tough fight with all that spellcasting per round so increasing CR is not necessary. Palerandusk: ancient Gold dragon, add high-level wizard spell, has Blurred Form and Incorporeal Movement from Theros Eidolons. may swap Blurred Form for an upgraded Legendary residence to negate all damage? Needs to work out how to balance the number of times this can be used. Larendrammagar: Ancient Gold dragon, could be a greatwrym? Knows all the Wizard and Cleric spells. Could cast them as legendary actions? Tchazzar: Red Greatwrym with immunity to poison, and non-magical weapons. has Divine Being, Magic Resistance. Summons 1d4+1 Red Abishai. Has aura that gives allies advantage on saving throws (Wisdom only if too strong). has an Orb of Dragonkind, an Amulet of supremacy to boost damage. Is a high-level Sorrserer that can cast 5 9th level spells. Imvaernarhro (Inferno): Red is probably a Greatwrym. the strongest sorcerer with 7 9th, 2 10th, 2 11th, 1 12th, and 13th level spell slots. Use spellcasting as a bonus action or legendary action. has a Rod of Absorption, Brooch of shielding, Ring of spell turning, Forbiddance (close enough spell), Teleport, and maybe just also throw in a wish he can spend 13 spell slots a day on just to sell his ridicules power.

Don't forget about Time Dragons. Introduced in Dragon magazine at the end of 3.5, these things are Huge from when they first leave the egg, and by the time they're Old, they are considered Colossal+. Their Breath Weapon can either age their opponents, dealing damage to their constitution *score,* or expell them from time itself, casting them forward into the future. They're constantly under the effects of Haste, can cast Time stop for free, and eventually get a Slow Aura that makes their enemies suffer from the spell Slow.

If I remember correctly, you can can cast two leveled spells in 5th edition so long as one of the spells you are casting is not a bonus action. Say you had fighter action surge and two level 1 spells. You can cast both level 1 spells by using action surge so long as neither apell is a bonus action spell. Its how you are able to cast counterspell (or other reaction spells) in the same turn of you casting a leveled spell. Though no reaction spells if you cast a bonus action spell on that turn :p

I think it depends whether the challenge is issued in-character or OOC. After all, the DM may be a metaphorical (and sometimes) literal deity of the campaign, but they're also just another person at the table.

The Draconomicon (3rd Ed) has a prestige class for high level dragons that turns them into full quasi-gods in the last level while getting many of the quasi-gods powers during the levels of that class, like full hp.

Bah! 5th edition lightweights! In 3rd edition was a type of dragon known as a Prismatic Dragon: challenge rating 66 for a great wyrm. Add the Dragon Ascendant prestige class and you have a challenge rating 78 dragon; for when you want a monster your players will never be high enough level to face! (A monster this powerful is pointless but I love that it exists).

I can't find the Time Dragon except as homebrew. What is the source? Static Charm; you're clearly not very familiar with the earlier editions. A tarrasque, zaratan or any of the older dragons are unthinkable for any but the most dedicated group and that's just the basic monsterous manual. 1st had less power creep but there is still plenty that are unassailable for normal players (Cthulhu on page 43 of Deities and Demigods says hi). D&D is a game system but it is also a tool box designed to provide any adventures a group considers appropriate and is not limited by what one person thinks it should be.

I just checked the old magazine for the stats for Time Dragons and it’s CR 26 as a Wyrmling, but that doesn’t detract from the fact that it reaches CR 90 at Great Wyrm. Also, the Epic Level Handbook has rules for raising dragons beyond Great Wyrm. (and thus pushing CR to ever greater heights...) Dragons are the most powerful species in D&D, it’s part of why they’re in the name of the game.
