    I was able to do this move and I didn't know how I did it. It was by accident while i was trying to pass the guard. This video explains it very well so now I understand this. I'll use this and try the different variations. Thank you, Marcos!

    So dope! I can't wait to try this in class! I usually do a knee split. I have long arms and legs, so popping peoples' feet apart while still kneeling is no problem, but the actual pass once they are open is always a pain. I like the idea of this Strong Pass because it appears you always have complete control.

    I did this pass after watching the video. It really worked. I held thier arm behind their back pinning them down for about 4 minutes. They couldn't escape. I did end up in the position where i had them in fulll guard and hand behind their back but could get them to tap. Persons arm was pretty flexible. My professor told me afterwards while i was in 50/50 with my opponents arm behind their back i could have used my free arm to do a modified cross choke. Could you make a video or have already a video doing a choke from that position?

    Great advice for those having trouble passing guard. That said, I can't understand why people find passing guard hard. Maybe it's because I'm only 5'9" or something, but I barely have to work to do it. I go low, letting them wrap my head down. Hand stuck up in plexus, other hand pushing their chin away, then quickly t-rex dig my elbow into their inner thigh, and as soon as it drops, I shoot my knee onto their thigh and it collapses from the dig/pressure of the leg. I twist a little, switching hands and repeat it on leg number two. It's dead simple. Sometimes, on the second leg, I take a wider stance and try and get a wrist or two to start feeling around for where I go next. I usually go for a elbow crank-like submission.

  • @johnkoven3019

    @johnkoven3019

    In my opinion (I would like to hear Marcos'), Sao Paulo passes are VERY skill-based. When I try to pass closed guard by standing up: if I make a mistake, I can use my agility, athleticism, I can scramble to try to recover. When I try to pass closed guard with a Sao Paulo pass, my fundamentals HAVE to be better than theirs. My base has to be better, my frames have to be better. If I have more speed and agility, but I make a mistake, I'm in BIG trouble. I think most passers don't use this in the adult division at black belt, both because everyone is so quick, and everyone is so close in skill to each other. Guarder can attack offbalances, armbars, triangles, and omoplatas against the passer. I really like attacking with the Sao Paulo pass to test my fundamentals against my opponent. Also sometimes I get tired of standing up a lot hahaha

    You are SUCH a wonderful instructor Professor. Can you do us all a favor? Can you PLEASE do an instructional do a vid on the N/S choke where you go over the mistakes/problems/erroneous thinking that plagues this move. I am a blue belt who is about to turn 56- so, unfortunately, speed and explosiveness aren't exactly at the core of my game. I do, however, LOVE this choke (it's my favorite by far) but 98% of the time I find myself in position, holding the choke and...unable to get the finish. I tripod. I squeeze. I move around. I grunt out loud, hoping to scare Uke into tapping 😁 but...no luck.... I am always so frustrated with myself and so dispirited that despite the fact that I act like I'm fine with it, I'm not. Oftentimes this is my ONE shot at tapping out someone better than I am- my ONE chance- and I blow it. So could you (PLEASE) go through the various scenarios of what us N/S lovers face, what we are most likely doing wrong and what we should be absolutely sure we're doing as we try to get the tap? Oh and lastly: please don't think I'm "that guy;" you know, the type of dude who tries to "win" every round, who counts his "taps' and celebrates what happens in class as if it's the Pan-Ams or whatever. I'm not at all like that and if I was it would be pretty sad as I GET tapped about 90% of the time (yes- I'm aware that I need to work on much more than just the N/S choke lol-- but since I DO somehow manage to get there occasionally, I WANNA BE ABLE TO ACTUALLY FINISH!). Anyway so yeah: please my good sir, do a N/S tutorial where the focus is on what can/will happen- what to do about various things the bottom guy is doing to save himself and lastly what the person trying to do the choke MUST be thinking about- and doing- as he/she attempts to actually finish the move rather than just hold some kind of crappy, frustrating, stalemate-type pin while the bottom guy moves around and often times escapes even THAT! Uggghhhhhh! Thanks again, Professor. You have an AWESOME channel and you are a natural teacher!

Your way is to post head on opponent’s right side. What is the difference? Any Pros and cons for the variation of posting head positions?

  • @deathtdow

    Surely you want to have your head on the shoulder as you said while doing this to trap the arm and avoid the obvious guillotine head lock he'll likely try to put you in. Because looking at this otherwise your asking to be head locked with his free arm (his arm must not be free to get the lock otherwise your in a spot of trouble).

    Thanks for the great vid and the sneeky pass. Is it similar in nogi, only difference is the grip of the wrist instead of the gi? Thanks

    Legit question: Why is the bottom player not going for a guillotine or getting double underhooks for a sweep? Seems high risk for the top player.

    Freaking love this. Already my instinct has done 80% of this, feet back, pressure on abdomen, controlling armpits, biceps, etc. I spend so much time in closed guard and when I pass, I get knee shielded... With my big upper body, easy to knock me over and the skinny guy knocks me off balance. But the forearm trap plus walking the hips over seems to be the missing ingredient. It's easy to get out of closed when the guy has stubby legs (hey, I have stubby legs...), but when it's a skinny guy with long legs with reasonable strength, it's pretty tough to get out. The first technique seems to be a fantastic answer for this. If I can grab that opposite wrist behind the other guy's hips, trouble is coming.... 😂
