To give some context to this amazing video... This is the show that Phi Lesh was supposed to play with SCI. It was going to be one full set of dead songs with Phil. Phil got sick and couldn't make the show last minute, so somehow Billy was able to step in. Us fans were greeted with an extra special treat. When Billy was announced to come on stage, Red Rocks erupted. Chills as I write this. Enjoy!
Music can be different from this, but it cannot be better! We are so blessed to have had SCI all these years; now we get Billy Strings! And all that on a foundation of the Grateful Dead! I have truly lived in a golden age of music!

I get that Billy is an amazing flatpicker, but its actually stunning how good he is rocking on the electric. Talk about being an all-rounder.

His incredible Halloween performance really highlighted his versatility. Going back and forth from standard bluegrass picking to avant-garde bluegrass to hard rock; all with amazing dexterity. I think he's a pretty good bluegrass singer too; especially when sharing a stage with Del McCrory, who makes him kick up his game a notch.

I actually found it pretty sloppy. I mean he's good, even really good, but compared to some of his contemporaries on electric (and by that I mean other players about his same age like Matteo Mancuso, Marcus King, Tim Henson, Mateus Asato, et al) he is not even close. I know guitar is not the Olympics and "best" is subjective, but those guys clearly have a significant edge on the electric. That being said I really enjoy his style, his fusion of traditional bluegrass with hard rock and metal, etc, and his singing and songwriting are excellent. I just wasnt blown away by his electric playing in this set

Was born in San Jose and the years 69 thru 75 spent a lot my time in S.F. listening to the Dead and most of the greatest bands/music put out in Winterland, Kezar and Fillmore and throughout the bay area.. Cheese captured Estimated like no other! Kang and Billy are true jam masters. And most of the concerts... I actually remember!
String cheese makes me want to tour again! They rock as a band and with Billy and others! Thank you!! Saw the string in a backyard in colorado and knew Oh yeah!! We are gonna have some fun! A culmination of so many great musicians past and present. I love them all!!
My husband and I were there! We boogied our asses off!

I’ve been playing for going on 40 years. And I still find this inspirational. Eyes of the world - these guys killed it. As well as the rest of it. They really are incomparable. Even though the covers are compared to a lot. They bring a different mojo.
@davidr1676

Too few bands add enough covers. Important to do them justice and I don't mean perfect copying. Those covers act on another level in winning new listeners or guiding the dosed from getting lost in a bad way in unfamiliar music. The GD probably understood that or at least unknowingly threw that safety net out there. These guys are one of the most underrated "jam bands" out there while there are others that seem far over rated.

I remember being a youngster at a lake in NH that over looked the once "man in the rock" off 93 and hearing of Jerrys passing.. it was the only thing talked or mentioned about that day, I understand why as he was one of a kind.... and his music... well that just speaks for itself.. you cant re create it!!!
Been to loads of concerts. Dead concerts, as you probably know were on a truly unexplainable event and they rate up with 99 out of a 100 shows, but... STI in Seattle, pier 89, it was a warm summer night, never heard of them. Omg, There is no there way to describe it other than this: I was a puppet being played and the strings were string cheese. 6 inches off the ground and everything. The crazy thing is, I was relatively sober 🌲 I will never forget that and nothing has ever came close. "String cheese incident" I get it😊
This is note for note/vibe for vibe. This is unreal! I just realized how rad this is! I am 42, huge dead fan!
Eyes of the World is the background music to golf tourney broadcast when providing over view of a hole. “So this par 5 dog left left features a tricky tee shot with tight landing spot nestled between several fairway bunkers. . .” 😂
Finally the Grateful Dead is grateful dead.
This is as good as it gets. Jerry would have been 80. I’m old 😂
Absolutely magnificent 👌 Eyes of the World from the 73 era has always been one of my favorite Dead tunes and SCI and Billy do it extremely well

'74 is the apex for EOTW in my opinion. Phil was at the top of his game and the band was locked into the groove. Freedom Hall 6/18/74 is probably my favorite.

@@mikel5582 I figured it was hyperbole too, but wow very impressive, and Billy the Kid sure is amazing. I think he might be the best at playing lead guitar on Grateful Dead songs since Jerry. And he’s right up there with Jerry. I’ve been to a whole lot of variations of the dead line up since Jerry died from the further festivals onward… And also some variations of Phil and friends… and other groups playing dead songs And unless I’m forgetting someone, I think Billy is the best I’ve seen … Assuming he could play this well on the majority of their songs.

When they started doing more of the electronic stuff, it seemed like they were just trying really hard to appeal to the rave crowd. It seemed forced, and from what I've seen brought in some unsavory people to the last few SCI shows I went to. Glad they're moving on from that.

Billy is very much an Alto and soprano with his licks, it’s the first time I’ve ever heard or seen him. I’d love to hear his guitar sing some Baritone, Base and tenor. Dark with the light. A little balance goes a long way. ✌️😎🌴🌞🌴

EYES OF THE WORLD!
Wow. I would listen to this all day.
When I first saw the set list for this show I spontaneously giggled
I flew down to San Fran to see these guys, by myself which was odd to begin with. I go to this concert down town and since I was by myself nobody noticed me. The break came and, in ways i can only infer, I joined the party. I did what everybody else body was doing apparently because the very second I 'indulged', that whole area of that section instantly became my friends as if we knew each other. it was instant. That was years ago and it still mystifies me how the paradigm shift was so crystal clear. Whatever it was that I mean by indulge it didn't even hit my stomach, so it wasn't me. It was as if a green light appeared over my head saying : "He's cool". Funny, just writing this makes me laugh.
We've seen SCI a good number of times, and this is an excellent set!
