Could I recommend a video regarding the rise and fall of Gretna FC. They went from playing in the English amateur leagues, to transferring to the Scottish leagues where they won three straight promotions, reached a Scottish Cup final and competed in Europe, only to suffer financial collapse and go bust in their first, and only, season in the SPL. All this within the space of just six years. One of the most remarkable cinderella stories in British football history, but sadly with a Shakespearean tragedy of an ending. Would be worth an in depth video.

I worked for the company the Gretna owner founded & with his brother for a few years, when Brooks died the family pulled the plug & the inevitable happened, always an interesting topic as wonder where they would be if Brooks was still around, literally loved football, used to travel to away games with the Gretna fans & paid for Fish & Chips for them all multiple times 😂

That says more about the level of Scottish football than anything else.

I still can't get my head around the fact that Hoddle left out Matt Le Tissier in 1998. He was the most technically proficient player England produced after Hoddle's retirement. Hoddle who himself was left out of the England squad a number of times because of his 'lack of defensive work/physicality ' did the same thing to Le Tissier.

Most overrated player for England, reason why he never played for a decent team

I was 9 years old when Glenn Hoddle made his comments, I was a young disabled boy and had never really heard anything like that before. I was massively into football and my dream was to play it (even though it would never be possible). He absolutely shattered me with his words and they still haunt me to this day. I can understand certain football fans appreciating Hoddle for what he may have done for their respective clubs. But I hate that he has been allowed to come back into the media fold, every time I hear his voice as a commentator or pundit it still hurts to this day. Ron Atkinson has been pretty much exiled from British media since 2004 when he made his racist comments and Andy Gray has pretty much been treated the same way for his sexist comments in 2011 (and rightfully so). But Hoddle made a much more detailed comment about the disabled and he's been brought back in with welcome arms. Even his apology was fucked up.

Those who follow that sort of religious belief see human experience as a chain of continuous rebirths in which souls are drawn to present experiences by previous experiences in previous incarnations. It's possible to hold such a view and have nothing but compassion for those with disability. I think the journalist he spoke to interpreted Hoddle's words in a way that made the story. He introduced Hoddle's spiritual beliefs into the interview trying to get a story. Then he chose to focus on something he'd hypothesized from their conversation, something along the lines of "so you think disabled people are being punished for something they did in previous lives? Glenn is supposed to have said, "not just disabled people" meaning everyone is a result of their past lives, but the journalist had the fish he wanted on the hook and delivered a story which made the headlines. He lost his job because David Mellor, Tory MP, Five Live presenter and Chelsea fan campaigned against him mercilessly. They said Hoddle was mad but it's a belief similar to 1.2 billion Hindus and 520 million Buddhists who see all conditions as transitional and determined by karma.

The mythology surrounding Hoddle's management is baffling! For starters, he should never have got the England job in the first place. Chelsea finished no higher than 11th in his three seasons at the club and he had one of the worst win-rates in Chelsea's history. You may say he had a couple of good runs in The FA Cup but look at who Chelsea beat: 93/94 - Barnet in a replay, Sheff Wed in a replay, Oxford, Wolves and Luton. 95/96 - Newcastle on pens, QPR, Grimsby in a replay and Wimbledon in a replay. Chelsea lost to Millwall in Round 4 in between those two runs. As for his time with England, the fact that his biggest feat was getting just one point in two games against a good but by no means great Italy side says it all! England failed at France '98, thanks, in no small part, to having a hard last 16 game after somehow failing to win their group after Hoddle decided the already world-class Beckham and Owen weren't ready to start the crucial game against Romania. The Euro 2000 qualifiers followed and England picked up just one point from their first two games! People claim that England were going places at the time when Hoddle was sacked for non-footballing reasons but the truth is, the fans didn't like him(hence the loud boos after his last game at Wembley), a lot of players didn't like him and England had been getting worse and worse over the previous year or so. Hoddle was probably just one more poor result away from getting the sack for footballing reasons. After England, Hoddle went to Southampton, where he did no more than a decent job. He then had a nightmare spell at Spurs and then went to Wolves, where he was sacked after winning just 27 of 76 games despite the club being one of the favourites for promotion during his time there. Amazingly, despite everything that had gone before, despite all the evidence to show his management skills were almost as bad as his man-management skills and despite the fact he'd been out of work for about 10 years, quite a lot of people were calling for Hoddle to replace Hodgson in 2016! You may think he talks a good game, you may think he has interesting ideas about formations and tactics but the fact is, although he was a great player, Glenn Hoddle was not a good manager!

As a chelsea fan what Glenn hoddle did for the club was amazing didn't win anything but got us to a cup final and turned us from a team who finished anywhere between 15th and 10th every year in to a top 6 team and got the ball rolling for those who came next can't thank Glenn enough really cause without him chelsea wouldn't be the same team today because with him set us up for the next step we wouldn't have been anywhere near the champions league pre2003 take over

Lage, Potter and Vieira have done well but they are hardly at elite Premier League clubs. If they went to a Spurs or Man U and finished in the same position as their previous clubs they would be seen as failures and sacked. Though another manager who did well at Wolves, Espirito Santo, went to Spurs and that was hardly a success was it? So no at the very top level not winning trophies isn’t doing well. Edit, My mistake Poch has won the League 1 title with PSG. Though because of their spending power it’s almost a one team league so he should win. But he won so he deserves credit. Yet he sill lost his job, for failing to win the Champions League despite having the world’s best footballer. So even winning a trophy isn’t doing well enough for the owners of PSG.

I’d disagree. For one, his man-management in the 98 WC was shocking. With his comments about Beckham and his temperament in the group games he might as well have painted a target on Beckham’s back. His words in interviews are as much a part of tactical game as his team talk, he didn’t understand this and it was as much of a reason of us not progressing as Beckham’s red card. By comparison Sven’s backing of Danny Mills in 02 was full and vocal. Having a manager that has your back is vital.

As a Swindon fan, I can confirm that Hoddle still has a lot of love in this town for what he achieved in his sadly-brief two years at the club. He was a very gifted player and seemed to have what it took to be a top level manager. I can't excuse the comments that led to his sacking and think they made his position as England manager untenable, but I do wonder what could have been if he had stayed.

My dad is a spurs fan who grew up in the 70’s and the one player he always tells me about is Glenn hoddle, he always describes how he could just walk through a team with ease and how easily he could place a pass on a pence piece.

I can now understand why in the David Beckham and posh spice episode of star stories they portrayed glen hoddle as a mystic swami who constantly bases his decisions on tarot card readings. My favorite gag from that was when hoddle draws a skeleton card and immediately interprets it to mean posh spice

So Glenn got some of his GF’s mum when he was a 17 year old pup and it blew his mind so hard he basically went along with anything she said, right up to the point of talking to god and having magic powers. Must have been some lay 👍

You're flattering Hoddle a fair bit here given that England's 1998 performance was a massive step down from Euro 96 which what was largely a similar squad, other than the likes of Beckham and Owen coming through and he was slow to put his faith in either of those two players. If we had beaten Romania, we'd have avoided Argentina altogether. I was at that England vs Bulgaria game you referenced...and it was a dirge of a performance. As a disabled individual myself...well yeah, I was in no mood to cut him any slack. I'm not convinced that we would have had a mindblowing Euro 2000 on his watch. He might have proven less reckless than Keegan and less likely to bail on us in the middle of an international window but on Hoddle's watch it would have been quarter finals at best in 2000 and I can hardly imagine him masterminding the 5-1 in Munich. Don't want to speculate any further than that.

I would also question whether those theoretical tactics would have worked. After all, Beckham was a right sided midfielder early in his career and without having a solid right back like Gary Neville behind him may have done a terrible defensive job in an unfamiliar role. Did he have the physical attributes to get up and down the pitch quickly? As always, the solution to the Scholes, Gerrard and Lampard situation was to play two of them along with a real left winger and to keep one on the bench. With the depth of talent England have they should pick players to fit the system, not a system to fit the players. Meanwhile, Hoddle went on to have a solid but unspectacular managerial career after England, so he hardly proved himself to be an unrecognised tactical genius. He had one decent tournament with England, as many others have done since.

@@chrischandler4151 Playing 3-5-2 would have likely worked better (for the Golden Generation) than playing 4-4-2 for several reasons during those years, this is because: *England lacked Wingers, RBs & DMs during this era. On the other hand, they had plenty of good CBs & Midfielders. Thus playing 4-4-2 was never going to work under those circumstances. *Having a Back 3 would have meant that Beckham would have had Defensive cover when going forward. Of course another option could have been playing Beckham in Midfield itself (and play Neville & eventually Johnson at RWB), which he has mentioned was his preferred position anyway. *By having Ferdinand as a de facto DM/Sweeper, it would have allowed England to have a Midfield 3 of Lampard, Gerrard & Scholes. In which Scholes is the Deep Lying Playmaker, Gerrard & Lampard can go forward without causing Defensive Issues (which they where best at) and the likes of Cole would provide a good backup option. I would also point out that England didn't really have a good DM option until Carrick emerged; although under a 3-5-2, he would have played in Ferdinand's position in a Back 3 (in other words his backup & successor).

Sparta Prague once sacked their manager halfway through the season, when they were 1st, 7 points clear of 2nd place. They have won only 3 titles since that (2006 I think) and never played the UCL again.

As a Wolves fan I'm glad you at least mentioned the ridiculous number of draws we had under Hoddle. I can also say categorically that Hoddle like Taylor before him was not a world class manager, just a man who had a good run and probably got the England job a bit too early. Like so many England managers before and after him, the England job came as a poisoned chalice and he never returned to the top of the game afterwards. The England Football Team's effect on managers has always been bad - Bobby Robson is possibly alone in going on to manage top teams after leaving the England job {Unless you count Venables one disastrous season with Leeds....The Club too big to go down!!!}. Venables himself clearly left England too quickly and should have stayed at least two more years for the 98 World Cup when Redknapp should have replaced him.

Glenn was my hero in his playing days and he was one of the main reasons I became a Spurs fan as young boy in the late 1970's along with the signings of Ardiles & Villa. From a football perspective it was unfortunate when you look at the managers who followed like Keegan and McLaren, who was out of their depth and Sven, who was a very unimaginative coach and who underachieved with the players at his disposal. The likes of Scholes, Shearer and Ferdinand were big Hoddle fans and sad at his departure. The FA are hopeless when it comes to England managers.

If you see Romford Pele's video where he talks about the incident with Eileen Drury, he reckons she laughed when he ordered the haircut and it was Hoddle who got the arsehole over it.

Great vid, when I look on that time I realise how talented the players were compared to now. It’s a shame they never came together in a workable system for any length of time. We just don’t have that level of world class talent anymore.

One thing that it's entirely plain to see is that if we were to judge managers purely on results and performances on the pitch, and not on off-field issues, then Glenn Hoddle would not have left the job anywhere near as soon as he did - mind you, he also would not have even gotten the job, as Terry Venables would have stayed in charge after Euro 1996...

He wasn't England's best manager aside from winning a preparation tournament which Brazil, France and Italy took as a joke. During his tenure England lost against Italy as well as Romania at the World Cup. It was very much par for the course as far as England managers are concerned: strong against the weak teams, clueless against the good ones. Maybe Keegan's difficult reign that followed makes Hoddle's record look better.

Great video! Personally, I’ve never forgotten Hoodle’s comments. It is often the case sadly that people with such extreme views have so much conviction in them they don’t think about the offence they cause. Imagine him saying this directly to somebody disabled! He was rightly sacked. We’ll never know what might have been…

Saw a documentary about Gascoigne a while back. If he’d played today he’d probably be the first name on the England team sheet. More importantly, he’d get the help he so desperately needed to combat has drink problem. It was no surprise that Gascoigne wasn’t selected for France ‘98. He was a time bomb.

I think it was because he didn't intend on playing gascoigne in his starting 11 which he felt would have been unsettling for Gaza as he was not used to being a squad player during his career.

An interesting video. I happen to remember it all very well. The bottom line is that in ANY job, it isn't just about your performance. WHAT YOU SAY is also important. There are simply some views that, if you say them publicly, will cost you your job, whether you're the cleaner or the CEO. In football especially, your behaviour, verbally and physically off the pitch is equally as important as on it. Hoddle never understood this, made his own position untenable and gave the FA no choice. Every manager and player who walks off a pitch needs to understand that the scrutiny doesn't end at the touchline, and any of us can get sacked from our job if we're stupid enough in our private lives.

There's a reason why STAR STORIES on CHANNEL 4 called Glenn Hoddle a "bonkers cripple taunter".

Don't know if you've done something like this before, but a 'Top 7 Goals that never were' would be cool, focusing on goals which weren't given but also weren't illegal and so should've been and how they might have changed footballing history.

He breached the terms and conditions of his contract that's why he got sacked. He went behind the FA's back to try and do some illegal paid jobs on the side.

If you want to blame anyone BLAME THE MEDIA. They were against Hoddle because he didn't play the media game with them. Hoddle absolutely the best England manager in last 50 years

So the bloke whose nickname was Sicknote claimed she was a success 😂😂 That's the funniest bit.

Well... Hoddle was right about one thing. 3-5-2 really did turn out the formation of the future. I think soon enough this actually will be the most common formation in football nonetheless.

I use it all the time in Champ Manager 03/04. But then I play the game managing an Arsenal side that has Vieira and Henry in it. I can’t lose.

Its not a new phenomana 😂 352 is great if you have the right type of players. Its no good with players Ince, Beckham, Shearer, Campbell, Batty etc.. you aint getting far with that set up with those players.

Nice analysis over Hoddle's time as England manager and I really enjoyed you going over the potential "what if"'s had he stayed on as manager at end. With this and the recent Southgate video, it makes me ask if you have any interest in possibly analysing what might have probably happened had Sam Allardyce remained as England manager had he not done the dumb thing that lost him his job in the first place (and presumably wouldn't do something similar that would cost him his job later). What would have been his tactics and squad for 2018 in contrast to Southgate's? Would he have kept on the likes of Rooney and Hart over Maguire and Pickford? How would have the team performed in both the remaining qualifiers and tournament itself (obviously, there would be too much of a butterfly effect regarding the World Cup draw so England would've definitely had a couple of different opponents)? Would he had carried on as manager afterwards and for how long? And who would succeed Sam as manager afterwards and, if not Southgate, what would Southgate be doing during all of this?

No manager would of kept Rooney! He could hardly run , he was like a 40 yr old and now he’s like a 50 yr old. Hasn’t drank water or had a vegetable in his life!!

If Allardyce hadn’t been caught in that particular sting that resulted in his resignation, he’d have been caught by something else. The man is a crook, and his tactics are medieval. England fans whinge about Southgate, but he’s the most successful England manager since Ramsey. He’s had some luck, but all successful managers have an element of luck.

@@attackpatterndelta8949 I totally agree.....If we roughly consider the beginning of "modern" football to be 1970, than England had only been to 2 semifinals since then (before Southgate took over). Not many people also know that England have never, in their entire history(including Alf Ramsey), been to a Euro Finals before Southgate.

Hoddle was one of my Father's favourite players to watch when at Spurs (and being a Scot, that's very high praise). I'm also a big fan of his co-commentary on BT Sport. I'm old enough to remember the faith healing / new age methods and theoris that ultimately brought and end to his short reign as England manager. I do recall that the faith healer had helped Hoddle with a back (maybe?) injury years before which convinced him to bring her in to the England backroom staff. Wasn't he sacked about saying something about disabled people are paying for a wrong in their previous life? Seem to remember he also did well for Chelsea in the 90s and helped bring in a bunch of legends for the club.

This is nowhere near as daft as Raymond Domenech leaving Robert Pires out of the French squad because he was the wrong Star Sign. That was criminally wrong to exclude him on a bunch of hocus pocus superstition. Blatant discrimination against people with common sense.

What’s even more Perplexing is how Glenn Hoddle has Never been in the Frame for any Meaningful Managerial Roles since then …. ⚽️

Something else worth noting is that Hoddle's main allies at the FA had been forced out in a separate scandal a month or so before he gave that interview. Basically, the FA needed to prove they were squeaky clean at that particular point in time, meaning that Hoddle chose the worst possible moment to commit such a major slip-up in an interview.

Man, I would love a separate video about David Ike.

As a Swindon fan who started watching Swindon as a child shortly before Hoddle took charge I have always been a huge admirer of his. I do think you missed one point on his tactical credentials; the sweeper system that he played at Swindon and could have played with England was largely his assistant John Gorman's work. Obviously he was also Hoddles assistant at England but it would have been nice to hear Gorman get that credit - he all too frequently is only remembered only for his unsuccessful tenure as Swindon manager and not being a great tactical thinker.

He was a fantastically talented player! Not fully utilised by England as a player and in an inconsistent Spurs team when Liverpool pretty much dominated everything. i don’t think his talents have really extended into management or commentating however. This channels creator makes a better fist of that!

I would be interested in a video ranking player managers Alfie can decide what league(s), tournaments or what years he only looks at so it obviously isnt just every player coach in every tournament in all time I think that would be a bit of a long video to make and watch but tbh I dont know much about player coachs Dalglish, Gullit and Rooney are the only ones I can think of were player coaches if I remember correct

Although it ultimately came down to his bizarre comments leading to his sacking, Hoddle had already queered the pitch with the Teddy Sheringham incident and his Ill judged world cup diary that upset many key personnel. Plus at the time of his sacking England were playing poorly and stumbling to failure in a very winnable group. His last win of note a lack lustre game against lowly Luxembourg. The comments about the disabled just gave the FA the easy out. Shearers goal drought happened in the run up to euro 96 under Venables.

When Ray Parlour tells that story thats not how he tells it, he says he said it and they both laughed about it and moved on, it was when Hoddle had heard that he kicked him from the team. Nobody apart from Hoddle cared much about it

How can Darren Anderton claim how good the faith healing was, his injury record was terrible 😆

Athough it’s common knowledge his man management wasn’t great he was tactically ahead of his time. If we had him post 98 till 08ish we would of been much better

The players of that generation speak so highly of him saying he was a top manager but yet his managerial career was nothing to be dancing about.

Should have built a team around Hoddle in the 80’s. Guy was insanely talented.

The idea that Hoddle was the manager that would've seen great success is IMO based almost purely on one decent half of football against Argentina. We didn't breeze through in 1998, we actually lost to Romania and faced a very nervy game against Colombia. It's impossible to know how it would've gone, but my gut says we wouldn't have done much better. The 4 games he had after the Argentina game included a defeat in Sweden and a 0-0 draw at home to Bulgaria both in Euro qualifiers. Hardly suggests we were going to be anything different.

I like that you brought attention to this. It kills me inside when I see Hoddle on TV. He was a mean spirited man, no pun intended. Maybe he's changed but it's well worth looking into. I get the sense that you're a skeptic as I've heard you drop in a Christopher Hitchens quote before. Amen to that, brother.

Glenn Hoddle was an amazing player. Check out his skill and goals. He was very underrated. By the way. Darren “sicknote” Anderton getting healed. Not very well I am guessing.

I see the back 3 being played more these days. Can you do a video on the 3-5-2, 3-4-3 formation evolution and adoption. Being a FM player over time I have adopted these formations because it is so hard to find good fullbacks.

I don't think the FA had a choice after the disabled comments.

As the son of disabled parents and also having a disabled child always thought that the karma thing was a bit of a joke. It certainly never bothered me what Hoddle said in regards to disabled people. Think senior players were not happy with him and that's really the main factor in his sacking. Pity because we certainly looked at our best during the 1998 world Cup, better than the quite frankly useless lot of managers since, up until Southgate was appointed that is.

A back three only works if you have mobile wing backs. Ashley Cole fits the bill but Beckham as a RWB is negligible when you have Gary Neville available. I'd move Beckham to midfield with Scholes and Gerrard, dropping Lampard and rotating him with Scholes and Beckham.

Interesting video. This is random but I had a dream where I was playing for England alongside Glenn Hoddle against Israel. I think we drew the game haha.

I suppose there is the same 'what if?' around Venables if he'd continued after the highs of 96. Bit of a surprise that in spite of all the good work to that point, Hoddle was pretty much a failure at the management gigs he got after England.

Yes I still think that semi against germany was England best game of the 90s - we threw everything at the germans in extra time bar the kitchen sink and just could not get the ball over the line and predictably lost on penalties. Hoddle inherited a class side and probably deserves less credit than he has been given.

Half an hour Glenn Hoddle without mentioning "Hoddle & Waddle". That's a feat. (There was a picture though).

Ray Parlour said that she laughed when he said "just a shortback and sides", the problem arose when Hoddle found out about it.

There really was some talent in that golden generation and the fact it was wasted on the international stage . Is a crime against English football fans . Their compared to the Belgium squad today but the difference is at least Belgium are competing at the big tournaments where the English lads never did

I don't know if a midfield of A. Cole, Lampard, Scholes, Gerrard and Beckham would've been defense minded enough to work out, even if you have 2 center backs and a sweeper.

Hiya Alfie, Glenn Hoddle was my idol growing up (back in the early 80s to early 90s,I was a Spurs fan) but now I'm a Newcastle Fan and it isn't because Newcastle have been taken over, I was a Chris Waddle fan also but before my days as a Newcastle fan, I enjoyed this vlog, I totally forgot about Eileen Drury, Glenn wanted Eileen Drury to be a sort of Back room staff (like a assistant manager) and F.A to pay for it, but F.A said "no" if Glenn wants someone who isn't to do with football, Glenn must pay for them himself", that's all I have to say about this matter, This is Choppy in Whitehaven, Cumbria, England

You are assuming that Beckham could have played as a wing back. He spent his whole career with Gary Neville covering for him at right back.
