The Strange Days of Backup Quarterback Success Should Now be Over

Ойын-сауық

In recent years the Seahawks have seen their team beat by a myriad of backup quarterbacks to starters who should be backups. Colt McCoy twice with two different teams, Taylor Heinicke, Sam Darnold, Marcus Mariota, Andy Dalton, and more. There was a specific reasons these quarterbacks would find success against the prior defense, and why the new defense will make it much harder on backups in the future.

That's what drove me crazy- we had a defense that crushed in the 2010's, but we did not have it from around 2015 forward. But the team kept thinking they were a badass defense, and the play calling reflected that. Run first offense with an offensive line that can't protect??? Why??? Because it's our identity??? It's not. Back in the day when the Pats were just killing everyone, it was because they exploited weaknesses. Their identity was to change their playcalling every game based on what the other team had problems with. Are they going to run it 40 times, or pass it 40 times? Depends on what BB perceived as a weakness, and the team (including Brady) had to be selfless enough to understand that the game plan involved them doing a lot of nothing, but to continue to ACT like they were going to do something. We'll get ya next game, running back. You'll eat next week, star wide receiver. In the meantime, we are going to feed our slots in the middle of the field 4 yards at a time all game long because they are leaving gaps we can exploit. That's where I think Grubb is taking the offense, and I like it. I feel like the defense is going to be upgraded immensely simply by having a coach that can articulate a complex scheme and break it down into bite sized pieces. Our identity needs to be "Terminator T-1000" - we are going to change immediately based on what we can exploit - on both sides of the ball.
