The story of the ship Gothenburg

The wreck of the 1738 Gothenburg was recovered in 1986. In 2003, a replica of the ship was launched, and in 20 months between 2005 and 2007 she travelled her original route to China and back home, visiting places like Cádiz, Spain - Cape Town, South Africa, and Canton, China. If you're into the Age of Sail you have likely heard of this journey and seen videos of the replica and her crew, but in this video, I want to explain the history behind this ship, and the intrigues which eventually led to her ultimate disaster.

Thanks baltic empire, very cool video. Videos on the other companies would be cool. I don't know much about this region and time period in history, so I'll watch pretty much anything.

Can’t wait for New Sweden to get an installment in the series, or the Swedish East Indies? That was a thing too right? More golden age of piracy cross overs are always fun to watch.

@@balticempire7244 This is fascinating, I had no idea Sweden had a trading company or a colony.

There was a video on KZread of the building of the replica Gothenburg, and judging by the materials and construction methods, it’s hard to believe that the ship sank simply by running aground. Unless she was traveling much faster than she should have.

The chinese calling euros barbaric is ironic.. they couldn't even explain why the world was round until euros arrived
