The Piazza Navona is one of those spectacular places in Rome that you should see at least once in a lifetime. Its history goes back almost 2000 years, and in this video I try to tell you the best parts of it. From the time Emperor Domitian built a sports arena there, to the days they used to flood the place just for fun.
It is a story that involves emperors, popes and a series of artists.
But of course, the most impressive part is the fountain at the centre of the piazza, built by Bernini and unveiled in 1651.

Another very interesting video Carel. I have never visited Rome but the fountains intrigue me as much as the churches. It's amazing that the fountains can serve as critical infrastructure while also being sought after commissions. Art co-opting utility is fascinating. I'd love to know more about the sculptures of the bridges in Rome as well.

Great explanation but it seems that the garden of the Domus Aurea was not a private space, it was a crime to destroy that building for the Colosseum.

WHEN ROMAN SPORTS AND WAR GAMES WERE PERFORMED NAKED IN ROME, WOMEN WERE NOT ALLOWED TO ATTEND AND NUDITY WAS A MATTER OF ADMIRATION AND NOT SHAME.
