I am definitely getting a TurboGrafx mini. I have been a fan of this system since the first time I had the opportunity to play it and currently own a TurboGrafx-16, TurboGrafx CD, Turbo Express, and a TurboDuo. I cannot wait until the pre orders begin.

Great video. Love this series.

I only saw one TurboGraffix 16 at the store growing up. It was at a used game shop. I never once saw one in a major retailer. I think NEC focused on certain regions of the US and the Midwest was not part of that.

I intend to buy the PC Engine Core Grafx . I had an original white PC Engine and it has always been my favourite console.

The Core Grafx at least came in handy for anyone collecting PC Engine as it used composite outputs instead of RF.

I will be getting the one Amazon UK send me. I never had one. But i imported my SNES games and was aware of the system but was a dream like the Neo Geo. AHH back in the day

The PAL TG was released officially in Germany. The PAL PC Engine was released in France. We got both in Greece :D

I want the TG16 Mini the most, since that's the one I always wanted. I hope it gets released in Australia.

When I was a kid, I visited England twice...1990 and 1991. I distinctly remember, whilst in London, having a conversation with another teen in a shopping mall tiny little arcade about PC engine. We were alternating playing Super Monaco GP and chatting. I said I had played the game before on the Genesis/Megadrive and he said he was jealous because all he had was the PC engine. He definitely called it out by name. I had never heard of it and later I went to a store in the mall and saw it for myself and realized it was the TurboGrafx 16, only impressively smaller. So at least that one kid in London had a PC Engine branded box!

I remember as a teenager getting street fighter 2 championship edition with a 6 button pad and that version had the 4 playable characters ( plus the right names for the fighters ) that the Super Nintendo didn’t until the turbo edition came out ...at the time I thought I was the don as my pals didn’t know much about the nec machine in the uk we played that game most evenings

Excellent video as always! I had to come here as I just purchased a Core Grafx Mini from Japan! I wanted the Turbo Grafx 16 Mini but they were all sold out. I did not want the PC Engine Mini as it features no turbo control pad but had that been the only one...I would have got it. At any rate, a thought crossed my mind while viewing this video. Had NEC decided to go all in and release the TG-16 in the US in say...late 1987/1988 running against the Nes...wow. I believe Nintendo would have folded like a deck of cards and the Genesis would have had an uphill battle.

The Core Grafx 2 was my favourite little machine.

My friend is a PC-Engine fans, he already said will order all 3 version. He in fact owns all 3 version of the real stuff IRL plus all those CD-Rom attachment.

PCE and TG16 are great consoles. I can't wait for my mini!

I used to have a European turbografx up till a few years back. I bought it from a high street chain store called chips back in the mid 90s. They had loads of new old stock of the consoles for 30 quid a pop. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and I wish I had have bought up their entire stock. Mind you i could say the same about the atari lynx when they were retailing as clearence for as little as 25 quid back in the day

NEC didn't support the TurboGrafx at all. Even Bonk wasn't an exclusive and they passed on Mortal Kombat and never did get a port of Street Fighter 2.

To be fair, by the time Bonk came to the NES, the fate of the TG16 in the West was sealed. The real problems with the TG16 here was only marketing in urban areas (not the best idea for a country that's spread out the way the US and Canada are) and their not putting out the new controllers, specifically the six-button one that was pretty much required to play Champion Edition Passing on MK (an offer of exclusivity, even!), was just further evidence of NEC's complete and utter ignorance of the western market.

@referral madness Bomberman started on NES and home computers, it's not really something you can hold against Hudson. Bomberman came out in Japan in 1985 on Famicom (1983 on home computers like the MSX), while the PC-Engine came out over there in October 1987. Likewise, Bomberman came out on the NES in NA in 1987 (likely before October), while the TG16 came out in August 1989.

The PC Engine had a port of Street Fighter 2: Champion Edition (93). In the U.S. however, Nintendo locked up the rights to SF2: The World Warrior game for the SNES(1992). Sega managed to acquire the license to SF2: Special Champion Edition(93),(with the Special part being the unannounced inclusion of Hyper Fighting), Nintendo licensed SF2: Hyper Fighting(93) for the SNES which included a Champion Edition mode. I don't know if the license agreements that Sega and/or Nintendo had for their versions restricted the release on a competing platform in the U.S.

@@lazarushernandez5827 Sega didn't get a license, Nintendo lost an anti trust suit. Capcom called off "Special Championship Edition" because they had an agreement not to make a game called "Championship Edition". It was basically Capcom daring Nintendo to sue them 😄

My uncle got hold of one of the illusive Turbo Grafx in the UK. I remember being really young and him letting me play it a little one day. I remember him being really secretive about it it, behaving like he broke the law to acquire it lol. Anyway I only got to play it once and up until now I couldn't remember what the console was, just having this vague memory and never seeing that console again. Was starting to think I just made it up lol.

For me, even as an American who had a hand-me-down Turbografx 16, I prefer the form factor of the PC Engine, but like the Core Grafx design the best. I'd get the Core Grafx mini, but at this point emulation of the machine is so good, how most people experienced it, and so on, that I'm not bothering. It's just far more convenient to emulate it on my gigantic laptop.

Had to order mine from us via Amazon to get it in Australia. Got the turbo grafx 16. Wish I'd ordered the Core Grafx ad it's design is quite nice and not the oversized monstrosity. Glad to have the opportunity to experience these games though.

I was allowed to get my hands on a Coregrafx mini 2nd hand (thankfully) for the experience of finally getting to play some P.C Engine games since I'm into games from that time period but have never even been in the same room as a P. C Engine or TurboGrafx 16. Was allowed to get it 2nd hand so I didn't have to deal with Amazon. I really don't understand or see the need for having this mini as an Amazon exclusive. It's strange to think that probably the most obscure console from the 80's and 90's has resulted in the most obscure of all the released minis. Strange how history seemingly repeats itself.

I plan to buy the Core Grafx. I have one, so it is cool to see a mini version. I hope a lot of cd games will be featured, as a don't have the cd drive.

I will be getting the turbo grafx 16 in north America as that is where I am, I will get either the PC engine or core grafx as well depending on what games are on them and how much they differ from the tg16.

Love TG16 games, especially those on CD!

The Valis collection alone was worth the add on! I had to emulate them ,though... so many great games!

Actually the CoreGrafx was also released in France by SODIPENG, in replacement for the white PC Engine , and that would explain why they made it sort of the canonical « European » console. If I remember correctly they even released the Super Grafx. For the 12 people who probably bought it.

Was the Super Grafx released in Import Shops? I thought the Super Grafx console was Japan only?

Terrific system I didn't try until a few years ago. Still a very solid system. I just hope the mini will have the CD games too.

I definitely am getting the TG16 mini despite my growing collection. I just hope I DON'T become disappointed. I already have my PC Engine Core Grafx modded to play US TG16 titles since I have a few of them already. I am also lucky to have a PCE Duo-R where I can play PCE CD and TurboGrafx CD games. As for getting a Raspberry Pi & throwing ROMs and emulators on there, I'm pretty disappointed in THAT since for the life of me, I CAN'T figure THAT part out. I can't believe I wasted my money on one. SMH.

I'm interested in the TG 16 mini for myself, since I do own a TG 16 with the Super CD for the TG-16. I'm in Canada, TG-16 games were not as easy to come by for me when the 16 bit wars were around.

I'll be that guy..... I'll just play my original tg16 I bought in 1995 at the flea market for $20. I also bought a turbo express at that time. From a pawnshop for $100 which has since been stolen. I'm still sad/mad about that, perfect screen, included 6 games and even had the tv tuner!

Back in my youth I had to choose between importing a PC Engine or one of those brand new Megadrives which was just being released in Japan. In the end I chose the Megadrive and, as much as I loved it, it became so common and cheap in the UK that I regretted not opting for the NEC machine. Finally I bought one of the European Turbografx machines a few years ago (only have the pack in Blazing Lazers gamer to play on it though). The Turbografx plays U.S. games which are far harder to get and more expensive than their Japanese counterparts (the last retro fair I went to in London I could only find more copies of Blazing Lazers for the system!). I'll definitely be buying the Core Grafx mini when it come out.

Would have loved a pcengine back in the day. Some fantastic coinop conversions. Sadly I never saw one in the UK and was not willing to pay INSANE prices for games on the import market. Think its time has passed now.

I'm hoping to score the PC Engine Mini mainly for Akumajou Dracula: Rondo of Blood!! But if it gets hacked, then the Core Grafx because it looks so snazzy!!😎

I spent some time with the Core Grafx and took a chance on picking up some games. By luck, I stumbled upon a game that demonstrated the audio fix in CPU of the Core Grafx, the same CPU revision in the Super Grafx -- they released at the same time, give or take, which is why they share a color scheme. Anyway, the game is Image Fight. In the menu screens, the music has weird pops on the original PC Engine and the Core Grafx 2, which reverted back to the original CPU. But the popping noise is gone on the first Core Grafx. It's good to know of at least one example of that audio fix in action.

I plan on buying this as soon as possible, love my TG-16!!! I kind of hope it can be hacked and some games added as well.

When I saw R-Type on this machine I was blown away! My brand new Amiga suddenly lost a bit of kudos that day :(

As of Wednesday, the tg16 mini has been delayed ONE YEAR in America :(

I like the way the Core Grafx looks. I’m tempted to get both TG-16 mini and Core Grafx. It’s funny how in the timeline you had it video kinda matches how the original systems came out. The NES mini came out a few years ago with good success. Now Sega has the Sega Genesis Mini is coming out. Now the Core Grafx Mini is coming out!

Does the Turbografx/Pc engine have a following in Europe now being that it was pretty much DOA? Whether it be original hardware or the minis? I remember the Nes came out, pretty much every house had one. One friend had a master system, which I heard did better in Europe and Japan. I dont remember anyone ever having a Turbografx 16, it even seeing commercials,, or renting the console in the video store. After going through a bunch of quality games on the retropie, i really had to ask myself "why wasn't this console more popular?" Must have been the timing, because the Genesis came out, and as Top Hat said, it crushed the turbografx. Then Snes came out, and that was that. Very interesting piece if gaming history right there, thanks!

I'm French. Actually here Sodipeng released the Core Grafx directly. They're some PC Engine imported before, but the official Sodipeng distribution was for Core Grafx because of the AV signal. In France a lot of people continue to call the console "Core Grafx" instead of "Pc Engine", it's like the official name here. This was an official distribution with a lot of games available at the same price of Megadrive games. This is why the European version is Core Grafx I guess, because it was the only official version released in Europe.

So, basically, the PC Engine Core Grafx is just the PC Engine Model 2 if you wanted to compare it to other lines from other companies... Like when Nintendo released the top loader NES when all attention was on the new SNES to keep sales going on the NES.

I’ll likely be picking up the CORE GRAFX mini. I just hope it will be as mod-able as the Nintendo mini consoles where, and have more heart than the PlayStation Classic did.

I would like to know a little more about these differences in audio between the PC Engine and the CoreGrafx.

I cannot afford an actual Turbo Grafx 16, so the mini will be great for me. Maybe it can be hacked and modded like the other mini's out there.

So i have nes mini,famicom mini,snes mini,european snes mini,super famicom mini,playstation mini,neo geo mini and ill also be owning sega genesis mini when it comes out so most likey i will be that sucker that would buy all 3 mini's turbografx,pc engine,and pc core grafx mini!

I plan to buy one of these mini consoles. I like the look of the TG16 one because that's accurate to how it came out in the US where I live, but if it doesn't include Dracula X like the PCE one, then I may get the Japanese version instead.

BitHead1000 channel put me into PCEngine. I didn't have one as a kid as they were not sold in my country.

@@greenkoopa it is possible that NEC/Hudson marketing stayed within the largest makets. That was a big reason for their failure. To be fair, the only places I saw it sold were K-Mart, Radio Shack, and I think ABC Warehouse. Not one of those locations had a playable demo display. That was a big mistake on their part. I remember playing Altered Beast on Genesis displays at Kohl's and Target and that had me hooked on Sega ever since. Had I got a chance to play a TG16 back then, my decision might have been different.

My PC-Engine is a Core Grafx II w/ Arcade Pro.

Regarding the TurboGrafx console that was briefly available in the UK... I can see that it had the same form factor as the USA's TurgoGrafx16. But did it play USA games? I believe the US console could not play Japanese games or vice-versa, so I wonder if the UK version had its own games or was simply the US version without the "16". Also, did it output to NTSC or PAL? I'm just curious - thanks for the info!

The TG16 does not have AV out. It actually predates the CoreGrafx, being designed in 1988. It was delayed until 89, however.

Bit late to this party but as a collector of mini consoles (I own NES, SNES, Mega Drive, PS1, Neo Geo, C64 and A500 minis) I couldn't not dive into PC Engine even though I knew nothing about it. I've ordered myself a Core Grafx Mini. Bit odd that it's exclusive to Amazon here in the UK though.

I often think about buying PC Engine Core Grafx and that one peripheral by Trerraonion, foget what it is called but the Core Grafx is just such a sexy little beast. I hope Konami doesn't screw up the mini versions.

The Turbo Graphics had impressive graphics even compared to the Genesis! The CPU was weaker, but the graphics chip was awesome!

Thanks, top hat gaming person. I'm very glad there are healthy-minded critically-thinking content makers that won't hype cheap emulators for 'collector's value' which basically do not exist. Too bad you don't have enough subs, just a bit more that I do, despite being in more popular language. I kinda miss more action-oriented episodes, when you act on camera. Like when you tossed game gear in the river, that was something.

There was the Core Grafx II later in the PC-Engine's lifespan.

I maybe wrong but I think the first Street Fighter game started with the Turbo Grafix. I hope that Konami bundle the game with the console.

Not true about the Genesis being more capable than the TG-16. The TG-16 actually had better graphical capability than both the SNES and Genesis but was held back by a lack of RAM. Once the CD expansion came which had extra RAM built in, the graphical capability of the system skyrocketed and many of the games look better than anything on the two competitor's systems. One only needs to look at Rondo of Blood to see what I mean.

@@danmakuman I just said what was better about it, the graphics. There aren't any actual hardware specs to reference that are better aside for the RAM I suppose as with the RAM upgrades it had by far the most working RAM. In fact, with all of the RAM upgrades it had over 2MB of RAM which is a huge amount for the time. But yeah, you can see the superior graphical capability in many of the CD titles. As I said before, check out Rondo of Blood if you want to see a game that easily trumps anything that came out on the Genesis or SNES. You can also check out Sapphire which is another highly impressive graphical game.

I want one, but no legendary axe makes me hesitate...

if the tg16 mini has bloody wolf, I'm in.
