The Story of The Great All Japan Pro Wrestling Exodus

Ойын-сауық

Remember when Scott Hall and Kevin Nash defected to WCW in 1996? Well imagine the same thing but about 10 times bigger and you have the great All Japan Pro Wrestling exodus.
Let me explain.
It was the year 2000 and AJPW had been on top of the pro wrestling world in Japan for a very long time. But all was not well behind the scenes.
Their biggest star Mitsuharu Misawa was disgruntled, fed up and at war with the company’s leader, a woman named Motoko Baba. See, Motoko was the widow of the late great Shohei "Giant" Baba, the founder of AJPW and the glue that held it all together. When he died in 1999, a power struggle for control ensued.
The result was a mass exodus - 24 of the 26 AJPW wrestlers all left together in the summer of 2000 to join Misawa in his new promotion, NOAH. It was a disaster for AJPW and the company nearly went under.

Noah is fire. As much as I loved ajpw, Noah gave me one of my favorite matches. Kobashi finally beating Misawa for the strap at spring navigation 2003.

They always had amazing matches, I don't think I can find a bad misawa match, but their final match for the strap was next level it was everything you want a passing of the torch match to be and then some.

noah didn't just slip in to all Japan's spot. Noah enjoyed an initial boost, while all Japan diminished, but over the long-haul Noah diminished too. all Japan was giant baba essentially.

Erich Bishoff has stated that he used Hall and Nash's signing to create a " WWF invasion " angle of WCW . lt wasn't a " defection " angle. What Mizawa did was a real defection.

  • @albertausprey

True. Although storyline wise, the “WWF invaded” WCW, the fact is that two of WWF’s biggest stars left to go work for the opposite team. The big difference here is that them two didn’t bring 95% of the roster with them.

AJPW needs to work with NJPW so they can become popular again. The reason i still watch AJPW is because of Kento Kiyomiya, Suwana, Taru and the Voodoo Murders. Having Yuji Nagata becoming Triple Crown Champion, the rating rised up.

Too bad Noah didn't really have a big star other than Kobashi and Misawa. They tried with Shiozaki, but they were already on the decline by then. Morishima meanwhile had his injuries. There's KENTA and Marufuji, but they're no where near how big Kobashi and Misawa were (and they got stuck in the Jr. division for a long time).

The boys need to do this to both Tony and Vince. They don't deserve to be promoters. Vince is over the hill and he's booking the WWE the way he likes things, and not the way the fans like things. Tony is simply a child who's trapped in a grown man's body, and he's incapable of leading grown men anywhere because nobody respects him. If you would've told me back in 98 when I was about 20 years old that professional wrestling would devolve from where it was to not being able to fill a small arena, then I would've said that you were crazy. EVERYONE was watching wrestling back then. Now, nobody cares. It's sad.

Wrestling is objectively in a boom currently. I don't know why you people hate numbers, because they weren't lying. Biggest it's been financially since 2001, records broken every week. Is it the BEST it's ever been since 2001? Not even close lmfao, but it is successful

I mean it kinda was wwe only lost two wrestlers those two being one upper carder a former maineventer the other being a midcarder(rip scott) but ajpw literally lost half the roster most of them being main eventers one of them being the world champ, and ajpw lost their sponsors and tv deals because of it wwf didn't almost die because nash and hall left so scott and nash are more famous for us but the damage they did to wwf by jumping ship compared to the ajpw mass exodus is very small
