For those who want to learn more about the Aral Sea: For the past 2+ years, our team have been working on a documentary series exploring the past, present, and future of the Aral Sea. The trailer has just gone live on our channel! 🙏

*I remember witnessing the shrinking and gradual disappearance of the Aral Sea. When I was a kid, the Aral see was still the Caspian Sea's little brother to the east. As a kid, even though I knew very little about what was causing the shrinking (because we didn't have internet back then!), I was gut-wrenched to watch Aral Sea (Aral Lake, as we called it back then) disappear. At first, the disaster was blamed falsely on mismanaged Russian microbiological warfare experiments that were poorly dismantled and disposed after the fall of the USSR causing widespread ecological contamination. But now, we know that it was the result of selfish and irresponsible irrigation. It's still heartbreaking to look at the map of Central Asia and not see Aral Lake in full force there anymore. 😪😒*

Because the soviets needed cotton and didn’t necessarily look into what would happen if they disrupted the ecosystems on that level because they didn’t really care and were worried short term not long term. Especially since the USSR collapsed and now you can’t really hold them accountable since they don’t really exist, and Russia certainly won’t provide aid since they’d rather militaristic and take back there former land through force not aid.
