Dick and Rick Hoyt, a father and son team who have been participating in races together for more than 30 years, were presented the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at The 2013 ESPYS on July 17. Rick, now 51, was born with cerebral palsy and though unable to use his hands or legs he and his 73-year-old father have run in more than 1,000 endurance events-including triathlons (6 Ironmans) and marathons (70) -with Dick pushing his son in a custom-made running chair.
YES YOU CAN.

Such a sad day. I learned of these two so long ago that, as a fellow Bostonian, I feel like I lost someone I knew. Rest In Peace... forever, rest in easy peace.

When I think about a father’s love, I think about Dick & Rick Hoyt. It saddens me to think that the world lost Dick, but it pains my heart even more to think that Rick Hoyt lost his dad, best friend, and hero. Dick Hoyt helped give his son a second chance at a good life. Rest in easy peace friend. You will never be forgotten.

I had the privilege of seeing Team Hoyt compete in the 2007 Iron Man race in Clearwater Florida . I had volunteered to assist where I was needed, it was such an amazing experience. When Team Hoyt crossed the finish line there were tears streaming down my face. God bless them both 😘

I love the contrast between the athletes in the audience who compete for wealth and earthly fame and this unpretentious father and son team who compete just to show the world how powerful and inspiring it is to be a selfless father and appreciative son.

Reading through the comments and I’m saddened to hear about Dick passing. These two Hoyts have inspired me in the years passed to become a better athlete. To dare to challenge what I think I can’t do, etc…these two are THE definition of athlete. Truly legendary and inspiring to all. Rest easy, Dick. Your legacy with your son is awe inspiring and continues to challenge others to never give up, to never accept NO

the Iron Father. it's people like this I get a huge amount of pleasure meeting. my job involves meeting many people. I remember one lad in a wheelchair like Rick. I stopped in truck to let him and his carers cross. I got no thanks from the carers but I'd never forget looking at the lad sitting awkwardly in his wheelchair looking back at me and putting his hand up to say thanks.

Although Dick has since passed away, the legacy of father and son will live forever. Don't forget the reason Dick and Rick did this: 1) To be together; 2) To show that people with disabilities should be included in all aspects of life.

to the people getting ridiculously upset over the few downvotes, let me explain something...you can count on 1 accidental downvote for every 10,000 upvotes, no matter what the content ios, they're usually just accidental clicks, mostly from people on phones and tablets that didn't realized they gently swiped over the button. so chill out, and stop being childish, and dampening the beauty of this story over such a trivial little thing.
