The Story of Ring Raiders: A Failed Micro Machines Cash-In!

Ойын-сауық

Ring Raiders is a 5 episode 1989 animated television series based on a 1980s toy line made by Matchbox.
Ring Raiders was a toyline consisting primarily of small (3-4 centimeters long) plastic toy planes mounted on plastic rings via a detachable display stand. The stands allowed the aircraft a small degree of mobility.
The line was rather short lived, lasting about six months.
Ring Raiders was more popular overseas than in the US with extra series of planes and a comic book series by Fleetway.

I had a few Ring Raiders. I took them to school one day. I played with them during one recess and took off the planes but kept the rings on after recess was over. During play time after lunch (still wearing the rings) a military worshiping kid (my dad had served in the Air Force and my brother was an Army MP in South Korea) got into an argument with me over the military and realism of GI Joe (this is all circa 1989ish). He swung at me and my instinct was to punch his hand. I won the fight in one hit thanks to those rings and the kid calmed down after than. And, yes. We became friends that year.

Not surprising I was a fan back as a kid, until Micro Machines Military released, the ultimate small scale military themed toy ever to exist. Also the UK got all 5 episodes on home video, I had the 2 double episode releases with episodes 2 to 5. I liked how all of them included a flashback segment of the spotlight character in each.

I had me some of these, and the Battle Blaster. I also loved the "Ring Of Fire" debut episode VHS to bits, and recognized the music and design of the show from Starcom the year prior (which I also had a wide collection of). Was a neat way to discover the history of aviation beyond the F-14, the F-117A, and the SR-71, which were the most famous planes of the 80s as far as I knew. I wished that TV show had taken off! Also, I recognized the sounds from the Battle Blaster as being exactly the same as a certain dashboard accessory for cars, which I think was called a "Revenge Box". It was a silly toy found in practical joke shops meant as a stress reliever for those suffering road rage. I let the driver pretend, even if for a moment, that they were shooting other motorists with weapons built into their cars ( which as a fan of Roadblasters as well, I found kinda cool). It was a silly, kitschy thing, and I guess when they didn't fly off the shelves, the guts of them were repurposed for the Battle Blaster.

When the thumbnail for this episode came up on the Apple TV youtube app, my reaction was so big and enthusiastic I startled (and amused) my family. I had the 'origin' VHS and a couple plane sets as a kid. A friend and I watched that VHS a bunch of times. The premise was clearly ridiculous (even to kid me) and the people were super weird looking, but we loved it anyway. The fact they broke up the episode with commercials for their own toys was A CHOICE but somehow fit the goofiness of the whole affair perfectly.

Never saw the cartoon, but the Fleetway comics were just as awesome as Dan makes them out to be...really hope they get reprinted some day, yes? The time-travelling aspect was really cool too...the toys themselves were always a bit too fiddly for my taste, but as and when Hasbro gets the rights to this line as they do just about everything else(!), it'd be awesome to see some of the pilots and planes be re-released in GI Joe-style scale....I'm thinking of Cub Jones' F-5 in particular...you know, the one with the tiger stripes, yes?

Recently I was combing over in my mind all the cartoons and shows I had watched as a youngster: Transformers, GI Joe, Mask, Voltron....etc. But there was one nagging thought recently in the back of my mind: what was that cartoon I saw that had all the multi-colored fighter planes....I knew it existed but I couldn't put my finger on it. I combed the internet and general searches didn't help so I finally did a google image search of that "80s cartoon with fighter planes" and clicked on the Ring Raiders logo... once I looked up the intro I had it........yessss!!!! that's the one!!!! I watched that pilot episode on VHS over and over as a kid. Used to wish I had the toy you put on your wrist that made the sounds. So much so i was almost convinced i DID have one, but we were dirt poor so highly doubt it. Anyway, i loved that show even though I only ever saw that first ep.

I suppose their legacy lives on in those Star Wars ring ship toys that started coming out around the debut of The Force Awakens. Fascinating video, fellas. I completely missed this show/brand as a kid.

I had one of these when I was a kid. The most fun I had with it was when the batteries died on the blaster and I had to make the airplane sound effects myself. Brrrrt!!! Pew, pew, pew!!!

I vaguely remember the comic. Mostly just how the WW2 pilot for skull squadron looked like ghost rider, and an American pilot who had to sleep in his own barracks because the other soldiers on his base hated his loud rock and roll records which caused a literal purple haze to come out of the stereo speakers

Audio cassettes of "Ring Raiders" have also been published by Ariola Express. They include really interesting story lines, but not matching the continuity of the tv series. There is a genius and scary episode about Wraither trying to detonate The Air-Carrier-Justice from the inside.

i clearly remember the cartoon specifically an episode where the ring raiders had to fly sky base using their rings they had to tag off to not you know DIE which was pretty heavy for an 80s-90s cartoon

I remember Ring Raiders warming shelves when I was a kid. They never worked as a concept at my school, for the very simple reason that you could come to school with a pocket full of micro machines but ring raiders counted as jewellery, which wasn’t allowed.

Ring Raiders premiered on September 11, 1989 as a 2 hour movie then a regular series on September 16. Based on the Matchbox toy line of the same name, this was an unwildly concept that only lasted for the length of a two (2) hour movie and 5 half-hour episodes. As with many programs at this time, it emphasized a "one world" idea, where people of various diverse backgrounds worked together for a common cause, Still, it was a program that wore its derivate aspects, specially from G.I. Joe (q.v.), quite firmly on its sleeve. Ring Raiders is made by DIC (the same people behind Inspector Gadget). The animation in this just looks like C.O.P.S./Cyber-COPS, and StarCom. In 1990, an NES game was planned for release by Matchbox, but was quietly cancelled.
