I have a reverse theory as to why the teleporter was on the Contact Light. In RoR, Providence teleports aboard the CL using the teleporter and destroys the ship. He tries to stop the survivor from leaving (presumably to prevent them from taking the teleporter with them.) The end of Providence's monster log reads " I had to kill him.. so why do I feel like I made a terrible mistake? ...Why do we have a teleporter from this planet in our cargo hold?" The way I see it, the teleporter was somehow put on the CL, and if it had reached earth, Mithrix would have used it to travel there and destroy everything. Providence crashed the CL to prevent it from getting there and to save humanity.

It gets better. The Contact Light left the planet, but the Safe Travels was still sent out to find it, meaning in didn't return back to human space. If you play through the first game and listen to the scene before the credits, it shows the cargo, hold freezes on a teleporter, and it goes to black as the teleporter activates. Meaning something teleported onto the ship after they left the planet. The crew of this game and the first game are also different except for Acrid (which was stated by Hopoo), and Rex (who was most likely on board the Contact Light). Rex was inactive during the events of the first game and Acrid was captured by the Void Reavers. Which further supports that the original survivors didn't survive, and that Contact Light is either destroyed or still out there somewhere.

Mithrix was trapped on the moon. He couldn’t escape to any teleporter because he was, yknow, stuck. Cool theory tho

"chasing glass frogs in the sun" ... wow. After you defeat Mithrix if you go past the ship and back to where you got teleported to you'll find a little glowy frog, and now I know why. Great video my guy.

“Trying to destroy it will risk [Aurelionite’s] retaliation.” Guess what? In Mithrix’s final phase where he takes all the player’s items, if you have the Halcyon Seed, the seed will be taken from your inventory and planted into the ground. This will spawn Aurelionite to fight Mithrix, and Mithrix will say either “THE WRETCHED GUARDIAN!” or “THE GUARDIAN... IMPOSSIBLE!” Also, in Aurelionite’s new lore entry, he sends a transmission into space saying that he is free and alive, and that he is coming for his creators.

Mithrix’s prophecy about Aurelionite’s future betrayal only came about because of his own actions. He caused Aurelionite so much suffering by imprisoning it indefinitely and just forgetting about it. Aurelionite was bound to be filled with hatred and vengeance after such an unjust act. If Providence had been allowed to raise Aurelionite and nurtured it, teaching it to care for other souls as he did, it likely would’ve become a benevolent being, like Providence himself. In the end, I suppose Mithrix was right that a being with so much soul would betray him. After all, Providence probably had more soul than anything on that planet, which naturally put him at odds with his brother’s disregard for soul. Perhaps Aurelionite would’ve taken after his father and opposed Mithrix in the end either way.

Gotta feel bad for Mythrix. Sounds like he really only become so evil out of revenge for his brother's betrayal. Provenance was so fiercely protective of souls and those who had them, he just couldn't feel like he could risk anything, even though mythrix was mostly abivilant to life, and likely would only have made minor complaints about his brother's protection of the weak. Mythrix even points out how provenance is more of a warden than a protector, his reactions extreme and volatile. I dont think mythrix ever meant to commit any genocides, not really. As you said, he was effectively a child. He was just angry, and just copying his brother. Mythrix did kill things, those worms know that well, but he never went so far as to wipe them out, or even come close to doing so. Mythrix was a prisoner who committed no crime, and we were forced to deal with what happened after we found the key.

The destination switch wasn't flipped to the moon, Mithrix was testing the prototype teleporter by going to the moon, so as to minimize the risks. Providence just proceeded to cut off the way back, trapping Mithrix on the moon.

It seems that Providence as well, loves living things (without much care for material objects) whereas Mithrix loves material objects and his creations (without concern or care for living things). The Gilded Coast and A Moment, Fractured are presumably created by Mithrix along with all the Architecture on the Moon and planet. Mithrix is the builder, and is why he has a hammer in the final battle with him.

Exactly and they keep adding to it making it better.

From what I gather: -From the gasoline log, the UES Contact Light randomly went off course, which makes no sense, the last thing a shipping company wants if for packages to be late, which leads me to believe the Contact Light intentionally went towards Petrichor V -This suggests that humans also knew of Providence and the teleporters, as is evidence of the artifact tp on sky meadows. There’s a freaking laptop there and a bunch of ‘human’ technology, which I don’t think providence or Mithrix used. Also, there are other human corpses like on wetland aspect in the cave to get the N’Kuhana item -Researchers must have gone there before, but UES is a very shady company as is described in one of the logs where a speaker talks about how they don’t trust them. -The existence of Petrichor V must have been kept top secret, since on the cutscene at the start they say “this planet isn’t on any of our databases” -Maybe the human researchers that went there before stole a TP from Providence, which is why he struck down the Contact Light to get it back. The ability to teleport stuff would be an insane bump in technology for UES, which is probably why they might’ve stolen it. That’s just my view on it Also, I think “She” is N’Kuhana as she’s the only other god like female figure in the lore. N’Kuhana in the lore is all about the balance of life and death, the malachites are there to cull the excess of life as is caused by Providence’s care for the creatures -N’kuhana’s gifts to Providence might have been some powers over life and death, which mithrix deems wasted on Providence

The idea that they were sent to steal a teleporter is actually all but confirmed, as its how you even get to the wreck of the contact light, and the commando remarks "... Why was there a teleporter in the cargo bay?" in Providence's lore entry after questioning if he had made a mistake. Plus its how Providence gets onto the ship to crash it in the intro.

i dunno if anyone else has commented this or it might just be a bug in my game but when you go to the logbook and go to mithrix it shows that ive died to him many times but ive never killed him despite beating the game numerous times, im thinking maybe mithrix doesn't really die and the moon doesn't actually get destroyed but instead he teleports it away somewhere

You weakened him too much, the void ravers had eyes on providence for a long time, they needed mythrix and providence to go to get petrichor V. When you kill or whatever mythrix he becomes unable to defend commencement, so the void reavers act fast and detain commencement

i thought the gift the girl gave was to travel to other planets like she did, thats how he got the other creatures, then mithrex finialy finished his teleporter and put it on the human ship, so his brother was forced to destroy the cargo bay, thats why in his lore it say stuff like "why was it on the ship?" And "I feel like I made a mistake" and it does say that he was the one who destroyed it probably to save Earth from him. On a side note they both act like kids, they both do what they do out of selfishness, mithrex tries to find out everything that interesting to him even if it hurts others and tries many times to win his brothers love and affection that was kinda lost, and his bro wants to save evething yes but he does not care for how he will save it, taking away there freedom maybe he has a nature of needing to be seen in a very good light a sort of need for approval so he goes out of his way to get everything and make things that he can control and keep, mithrex was kinda right when he called the slaves in a way I feel. He even took his brother freedom away instead of doing the harder thing and just talking to him.

The gift might have allowed providence alone to travel which was maybe why Mithrix was envious. And the ship being destroyed or why I imagine would be to keep those on the ship on the plant like Mithrix says “you do not allow them to pilot” providence doesn’t let them leave.

The ideologies Mithrix and providence give me some hard light and dark vibes from destiny. With mithrix being the darkness because of his fascination with following the design and not caring much for conscious and complex life and providence being the light as he is fascinated with life and its diversity. The origin even has some paralels with providence wanting more life in what they made while mithrix wanted to stay true to the design much like the darkness and its final shape philosophy. Even the idea of the design can be connected as the light wished for more than one pattern that was stronger than all, while the dark wished for them to keep the universe in line with the one true pattern. The pattern is stated to be strong and simple and constant much like mithrix's constructs. While the patterns that the light would try to make were seen by the darkness as weak and unpredictable and volatile much like how mithrix describes life. Sorry for this being so long but i had to put this compsrison out there.

The only issue is that you say Providence is the one that put the tp on the ship in RoR1... But Providence is the antagonist of the game. He starts the game off by destroying the cargo bay of the ship that is taking the teleporter away from the planet. It's more likely that humans came to the planet and were stealing and researching the teleporter technology.

Possible not is set in stone

Providence had two worms aid him in the final battle during RoR1. He really did love worms. This speaks a lot to his capacity for compassion, seeing great value in even what some consider the lowest of creatures. People like Mithrix often use the terms “insect” or “worm” as an insult because they see them as worthless.

perhaps "she" is nukuhana? i heard that apparently she is their sister or something. Maybe you could explore that in upcoming videos.

i wonder if "Her" gift was the Blight we saw in RoR1. Prov had his shadow clone, and blighted enemies would appear later down the line so maybe "She" gave P the blight in order to be stronger because he saw the limitations of the flesh.

Good theory it’s very possible that can be the case because in ror2 we don’t have anything blighted which means the gift could have disappeared when we killed providence.

I think the void reavers are significant, especially the fact that the moon is detained after you beat Mithrix, it would be interesting to see a video about that because it seems like an odd detail

True, as a species Providence and Mithrix were definitely superior to most other life forms.

You missed the most important part! The very last cutscene you get is of the moon "exploding," but that was not an explosion - I think it was teleported somewhere. Possibly Earth, as the log for Commencement suggests. With that in mind, perhaps there will be a third game...

What if Providence put the teleporter on the ship so he could add humans to his collection of soul-driven creatures on the planet? Mithrix does acknowledge that Providence puts up "wall and barriers" to prevent any of those creatures from leaving, and Providence himself tries to stop you from leaving in the first game. It could be that he grew too bold in his acquisition and, eventually met his end at our hands for his hubris.

He actually says the clay templars will be of inspiration, which are in the game

The clay templars have a Machine Gun-esqe attack and he used that on the flying chimeras

One of my favorite details is that after the Anniversary update, the moon detonation was changed to look like a Void Reaver explosion.

Awesome video!! What happens after the “Moon Detonation” ? Did Mithrix’s death cause the moon to teleport? (To Earth?) Hence his grand design likley could have been creating a massive teleporter that could move the whole moon, and his army of constructs as well, to orbit earth to wage his genicidal war of revenge on the humans against Providence. (Also if that theory is true Earth is def not in a good place after the end of RoR 2 with an army of constructs in orbit) Just curious cuz the ending cutscene looks less like a detonation and more a teleport / collapse. Thoughts?

Actually he Could have the fact that the moon detonated when he died show the capability of the greater gate he designed. Mithrix could have very well designed a gate that allowed him to jump to different solar systems or galaxies.

That's more likely the void reavers detaining the moon. If you die in that sequence, you get the detained message as if a reaver deleted you.

Possibly he explained. That he was making a “greater gate” so a means to travel greater distances in space. The moon seems to teleport at the end as well so that might be the case even though it says self destruct.

I really love your lore deep dives and I was so happy to see this video come out. I'm personally of the opinion that maybe the "She" that's mentioned in the lore logs is someone from UES- they ship all across space, and maybe Mithrix just sees them as a tool he could use to traverse (and conquer) the galaxy. It's clear that UES is very interested in Petrichor V and the methods of teleportation; they're a shady shipping company, and that kind of technology could be invaluable to them. What if they either gave a UES researcher a teleporter, or one was stolen by UES, and Providence, knowing that there's a teleporter out there somewhere in the galaxy that his brother could possibly hijack and use to leave the moon, sees that the only option is to take down the Contact Light when it returns to their star system and take back the teleporter by force, to prevent untold destruction?

Providence. The sheer fucking scale of ROR compared to the more balanced ROR2 means that circumstantially Providence is much harder. You deal millions of damage per hit in that game, so it makes sense the one thing that can tank it is harder than Mithrix.

Diggitydog you can't scale damage values to actual lore scaled strength. A point of damage doesn't equal anything but simply a percent of a health bar of an enemy.

It was imprissoned by the void reavers due to the immense power it holds. The void reavers police the universe and try to destroy anything too powerful, including mythrix, this is why on lunar stages there are dozens of reaver corpses, and also why the swarm in after he dies.

​@@DepressedCrow Yes, and in addition, the hidden realm Bazzar between Time, which is on the moon, and Newt is servant of Mythrix, there is a purple portal next to Reaver corpses presumably killed by either Newt or Mythrix and thus couldn't close it. If you enter, you can unlock "cells" and unlocking those leaks powerful items and creatures. Those cells are those prisons and usually are inaccessible unless a specific reaver opens them.

@@DepressedCrow It's in some item description, Newt is part of a warping species using a "slip stream", but he specifically is blind. Mythrix abused that and gave him a place which Newt enjoys, Mythrix benefits from Newt however in a way a captor, or maybe he gives him salvation.

I get the impression that they didn't quite anticipate how capable and dangerous an interstellar species could be. That something ultimately weak can make things that make them far stronger, not as capable as a god but dangerous enough. i have a theory that providence and mithrix at one time were part of a single being but being lonely he split himself in two. this works when you consider the points of the twos personalites, mithrix is kind of cold, he is analytical, he doesn't quite understand emotion much like the left part of your brain where as providence is a bleeding heart, he feels he has to protect while simultaneously being contradictory by seemingly creating things for war.

Believe it or not if you have the boss item for aurelionite during the boss fight with mythrix, when he drains your items he brings out aurelionite who one-shots him

Providence may seem noble and selfless, and Mythrix selfish and uncaring, but that’s only examining them at surface level. Providence was retrieving species on the verge of extinction and placing them on Petrichor V. They were all grateful for his rescues but if you examine a choice few items and recall Mythrix’s own comments on this behaviour, it’s almost as if Providence had a god complex and managed all of these species with an iron fist. Noble, indeed, stripping these monsters of their freedom and confining them on the planet. Mythrix also states that each and every species acquired by Providence were responsible for their own planet’s destruction, so this “peace” would not last if Providence left them to their own devices. Mythrix judged them rightly, in my opinion, life may be sacred, but some more than others. Mythrix loved his brother, and only wanted him to be happy and free, to pursue life that is actually worth his time, not the “vermin” that he eventually took under his wing. “Vermin” that are capable of great violence as well as love, which is displayed quite vividly in-game.

When Mythrix states that he is creating greater portals to travel the greater seas, it makes me think that he either created or figured out the use of the Newt alters and the portals that go between dimensions, and planned on using these to beat Providence to planets and destroy them before his brother could save them. Thoughts?

Not dimensions yet I think he just meant space travel first because Mithrix couldn’t travel through space but providence could.

Alright, so after watching this video, and rereading the logs that are available, I have a thought. Perhaps, what Providence feared most was earth's literal stability. Many of the creatures the survivor sees on Petrichor V have a huge capacity to destroy. Not only that, but these creatures were already rescued from their individual dying planets by Providence. In RoR1 even the children, who might have simply been trying to play with the Survivor, had a way of causing harm. Now, and stay with me here, Providence wanted to be an older sibling. To a being like Providence, those other creatures were simple children, in need of a parental , or mentor figure. Here me out. During his first attempt at making a being, he gave it to much soul. But notice how it is a seed, a child. His brother berates him, and tells him to go to his room. Then essentially says I will clean up your mess. But Providence wanted to nurture Aurelionite. He didn't care about it's faults, or how it wouldn't be able to protect them, he just wanted to care for it. Care for something that had a soul. So, with that being said, I could see Mythrix teasing, at least from afar, Providence about how stable and self sufficient the earthlings were. They didn't need him like the others did. Because unlike the others, they found a way of traveling the dark sea. Even if they destroyed their planet, they could simply sail the stars. Now, with them possibly visiting prior RoR1, and taking creatures and samples from there. Providence saw how messed up these space orc's were, as they would experiment and mutate their findings. I.E. Acrid. Providence most likely saw his brother in the cold way the earthlings experimented with the design and cared more for weaponry than living creatures. But, he also saw how if they were to infest his planet, the earthlings might make the others more self sufficient. Mithrix asked why Providence wouldn't let them Pilot. Earthling already had the ability to pilot ships through the stars. So, if that gate was taken to earth, then earthlings would invade in mass, and then most likely either start a war, in which Providence's people would be forced to advance their technology, or try to colonize and teach the natives of P-V new ways of living besides under a so called god. Also, a mini theory as to why the natives of P-V were always hostile towards the Survivor. Providence is the one who brings new creatures to the planet. So, he might have introduced them to the other species and basically said. "Hey these things are here to stay now. You guys play nice." Since the Survivor wasn't introduced, the natives are automatically hostile. No friend of Providence, no friend of ours. Anyway, that's just my thoughts on that matter. I really love the games.

Well we lack and explanation for blood which could be the she because providence represents soul and Mithrix corresponds to design, so we need a correlation for the blood pillar. @Somethingsaucy observation on point.

Hey, sweet video. Sorry if you've heard this before, but I think the claim about the name of the planet being entirely community created is a bit disputed. If you listen to Chris Christodoulou's album commentary for ror2 for the track Petrichor V, he says that a user commented on a KZread video of the soundtrack for ror1 saying to use the name "Petrichor" in the future, if they ever make a sequel. He eventually did that, with no intention of it being the name of the planet. However, he added a "V" to it, which reminded people of the way we classify planets in solar systems, and the community took a liking to the name of the track Petrichor V and sort of adopted it for the planet. Hopoo himself asked Chris where he came up with the name Petrichor V, and from that point, Chris says Hopoo adopted the name too, making it official.

I’d like to see how the void reavers fit into all this. They don’t have a clear creator, and seem to appear wherever destruction is- namely, the destruction of the moon, the wreckage of the contact light, and a few other places. In addition, we can see void reaver corpses around the null portal, as well as in the void fields, but we never see any reavers nearby. What killed them? the ones in the null portal’s cave are frozen in incredibly large piles of crystal. That also begs the question, what happened to the artifact code on siren’s call, and how did it get sliced? my hypothesis is that a void reaver might have detonated near it, slicing out that circular section and transporting it to the void fields. that might explain why we see their corpses there- they come from the fields, or at least from its energies, and when their physical forms die the cell rips a hole in space to take them back.

When mythrix mentions a "next time" makes me think that will either reincarnate or be brought back somehow. Like a soul traveling the planes of existance, like the imps jump from the red plane and the existence we play in.

Death may be more of an inconvenience to them kind of like the main character in blood borne. He says this "plane" grows dark, which suggests to me that for him death is akin to banishment, and some time in the future the two of them might finally return anew.

This explains why mithrix seems shocked when you bring the guardian (alurite?) into the final battle is ROR2

I just realized that the arena you fight Mithrix in is the teleporter he uses to teleport the moon, kinda explains that somewhat random zoom in on his skull/helmet at the end. Also since Aurelionite has a conscious does that explain why he helps you whenever you "free" him from the vault?

It would make sense once you pick up the halcyon seed. Also yea most of the moon seems to have been warped by Mithrix in some way long before we arrive.

Thank you so very much for putting in the work to make sense of this all. I spent quite some time reading the logs and coming up with some theories (I couldn’t ever come to any great conclusion). It is great to know there is someone much more inclined in the RoR community to piece this together. But I am curious... as I have read some other comments, there are comments about the Halcyon being trapped in a different dimension/space-time. This begs the question, what is the bulwark for? and the Void? Are those places created by the brothers?

Also I think the void simply exists they didn’t create I would imagine. And the bulwark ambry was the place they stored the artifacts.

I think I just realized something. When Mithrix says "worms" at 1:06, there is a chance that he could very easily be talking about magma worms or overloading worms, as we don't see any other worms in particular besides those.

Mithrix’s prophecy about Aurelionite’s future betrayal only came about because of his own actions. He caused Aurelionite so much suffering by imprisoning it indefinitely and just forgetting about it. Aurelionite was bound to be filled with hatred and vengeance after such an unjust act. If Providence had been allowed to raise Aurelionite and nurtured it, teaching it to care for other souls as he did, it likely would’ve become a benevolent being, like Providence himself. In the end, I suppose Mithrix was right that a being with so much soul would betray him. After all, Providence probably had more soul than anything on that planet, which naturally put him at odds with his brother’s disregard for soul. Perhaps Aurelionite would’ve taken after his father and opposed Mithrix in the end either way.

I saw this in a different video but once you defeat Mythrix a translucent frog appears on the teleporter that you start at and I didn’t get it until the line about the glass frogs

The last line of Mithrix when he finds his end is Interesting. If you think about the concept of risk of rain, what actually happens and what is somehow teased in the log for transcendence, there is much more to that sentence. If we assume we are observers / controllers of the action of the characters, we start a new universe on each failed attempt to finish the game. Each has its slightly differences in Item drop and Monster spawning. Not one run is the same. So that could mean that the universe repeats - we come back again. That will and could also be the case for Providence and Mithrix. They could get it right , next time. Or more precise, their next run. The thing is, if the repeat only starts if you die, there can be a long time span before you actually return through death. We observe that in mere seconds if we start the game anew, but for Mithrix and Providence, they had a long life until their reset came through you. Not to mention, every failed run would not gave them the opportunity to meet again. There is an Interesting thing about this, while there has to be infinite possible outcomes / runs for each involved, we can only observe to the point where we succeed. We can´t observe the new one where Providence and Mithrix get along and probably even win over humanity because they are united and know to stop humanity before they travel to the stars. It would be impossible because we can only see if every step leads to the point where we start the game. This could also be interesting to think about because we know by our success that there has to be one universe where these brothers don´t separate, where they get it right. And for some out there, this might feel good. It would release us from the guilt feeling we felt since risk of rain 1. We know that Providence just guarded the weak, we know from some monsters that they aren´t evil. But you can´t escape this loop because you are not in control of this circumstances, you can either die and not come again, or battle everything, survive and go on with your origin story. If you feel this tingle of guilt by playing the game, supported by the awesome music, and you understand what i try to explain, you can feel even more mixed feelings now. And while this is a extreme interpretation of a fictional universe, there are theories about such topics for the real world also. But nobody really remembers a past choice or life (or its not proofable enough) , but that is the case with risk of rain because we can loop this digital fictional world. I am not good at theories, so if there is more hints to this or if that is plausible or total bullshit, let me know. But either way, i think this would be awesome and i do believe the story behind risk of rain is very well thought out. But i might be fooled and the dev(s) made things up on the fly, i don´t know.
