I really love how the reporter’s tune changes. It’s clear that he wants to rip the Royal Family to shreds once more, but as Princess Alice reveals more of herself it disarms him and he’s even more fascinated.

I love how his whole demeanor shifts as they talk. He clearly comes in looking to dig up some dirt and seems almost bemused as the interview starts. But once Princess Alice mentions meeting Sigmund Freud, he realizes 'Oh, damn, there's a real story here.' and starts taking her a lot more seriously.

Jane Lapotaire acted the hell out of every scene in that episode.

Fun Fact: Jane played Princess Dagmar/ Empress Marie in the 1970’s miniseries Edward the King, about Edward the Seventh. Jane and Helen Ryan were a total force as the Danish Sisters Alix and Dagmar. I recommend it to anyone to watch!

Agreed. She was absolutely heartbreaking the whole time. From a slight tilt of the head and a Mona Lisa smile to her crying missing her sisters in the Greek nunnery, every scene was so expertly played.

The first half of this scene perfectly tricked me; I was expecting the newspaper story to be a big scandal about a crazy royal relative, instead it became a tribute to an incredible life.

The Crown gives the impression Anne took the time to learn about her grandmother. Given Alice’s own history and relationship with Philip it would not be surprising either interacted very much until then.

I only learned about this amazing lady via The Book of Dreams and Beauty - or something like that- posted to me some months ago. It also mentions the Romanoff family and it shows the children as they were before their terrible tragedy. I noticed the incredible likeness of King George VI to the last Russian Czar Nicholas. They could have been twins.

I'm so happy for this episode. Princess Alice was a human that deserved far more recognition for what she has done. If it weren't for this episode, her life would remain unknown to millions of people. Thank you Netflix for sharing her story.

@@audrey5592 He was in many ways a brilliant man and we wouldn't have psychiatry today if it weren't for him. But he made a lot of mistakes. He recommended nose surgery for a young woman activist because he thought it was a sexual organ and did such abad job that she ended up having to have it cut off. I don't know which fact is more surprising: that he actually admitted that he was wrong, or that despite the loss of her nose the woman still identified herself as a Freudian.

I’ve never heard of Princess Alice but her heroic and tragic life needs to be told on the big screen.

I would recommend Hugo Vickers book about her. She had a wonderful sense of humour and wit in addition to her bravery, charity, and generosity. During the German occupation of Greece, she organized soup kitchens and hid a family of Jews in her apartment. In her youth, she was a nurse near the frontline. She was simply a wonderful person.

She hid a Jewish family in her house in Nazi occupied Athens. A true hero

Yes, their name is Cohen and their descendants are still alive and praising Princess Alice for her true heroism during the occupation of Greece by the Germans. How sad that her courage was not shown. Also, Prince Philip did NOT see his mother taken away according to his biographers. He returned home from school to find that she was gone--and would be gone for years--which helps explain his sense of abandonment (he'd already been abandoned by his father, Prince Andrew) and resentment of his mother.

She was successful. They gave up and left her alone. Resulting in the family she hid not being discovered

Absolutely beautiful episode. “Bubbikins” really captured Princess Alice, how she was a true “Mother Theresa” and gave up everything for the needy. I’m very happy Netflix decided not to skip over her important storyline. Prince William visited her grave site in Jerusalem during his recent visit.

Sharon V yes. In her final will she stated she wished to be buried in Jerusalem “overlooking the Garden of Gethsemane.” The Palace complied with her final wishes and her body was transported to Israel and buried in a convent in Jerusalem.

Sean Go - Indeed! Sadly, Jane Lapotaire's acting career in recent years (her senior years) pale in comparison to female actors of her age and generation: Helen Mirren, Charlotte Rampling, and Glenn Close to name just a few. These three all have title roles and very substantial parts in films and TV shows they appear in but not Lapotaire. Yet her acting style is so polished: delivery of dialogue, body language, facial expression. All near perfect. Mirren and Close have acting style signatures that are sometimes awkward or exaggerated. Close sometimes does a Katharine Hepburn mimicry that's cringy to be honest. Only Rampling can level up to Lapotaire, acting style-wise (my opinion, of course).

Yes she was deaf, but she managed to speak a few languages including Greek and English. Not only that Queen Victoria learned sign language for her. I'm glad princess Alice is getting some recognition she deserved.

She really helped many families and especially orphan girls in Greece. Some of them are still alive.

She hid a Jewish family during the Holocaust and even avoided having the SS search her residence using her deafness to pretend she couldn't understand them (she could read lips fluently but they bought it). She was awarded "Righteous Among the Nations", the same award given to for instance Oskar Schindler of Schindler's List. There is so much to her story. A whole series could be made about her really.

Princess Alice is an extraordinary historical figure. Don’t know why there was never a movie made about her life, or at least a docudrama miniseries. She had the diamonds removed from one of her tiaras so that Philip could give Elizabeth an engagement ring “fit for a queen”...just one very minor gesture of love and consideration by this selfless, courageous, marvelous woman.

I was reading Princess Alice's wiki page, and it says when she told her daughters she wanted to be buried in Jerusalem her daughters said it would be too difficult for them to visit her grave over there and Alice replied (I'm paraphrasing), "nonsense! I'm sure there's a perfectly fine bus service!" 🤣 you know, funny because they're royal princesses and they'd be scandalized to ever stoop so low to ever take a bus unlike Alice who died penniless after having gave away all her possessions. Also, on her wiki it says that during WW2 a German General assuming Alice was pro nazi because her daughters married German princes asked her if she needed anything while the Germans were occupying Greece and she told him, "you can take you troops and get out of my country". 🙌🏻 zing

The royals get all kinds of stick these days and often rightfully so, but some of them more than others have an incredible place in history. Not many people know too much of the Duke of Edinburgh's family other than his royal connections and the greek exile so i think the Crown explored this really well and i'm glad they gave his mother her own designed episode...her story deserves it. Princess Alice went through a tremendous ordeals, but lived through so much..being a granddaughter of Queen Victoria and going onto live through dreadful treatment and then saving countless lives in Nazi occupied Greece....a true princess and an incredible woman.

yeah tbh i've never really liked the royal family for the most part because of their privilege, but prince philip and his mother were really incredible. Their story, and what they achieved, was truly remarkable, and i can't think of too many celebrities who I admire as much as them. They went through hell, and still had the strength to thrive and serve others particularly during ww2

Yad Vashem was the most tragically beautiful place I‘ve ever been to. As a 16 year old German girl it was not only filled with immense sadness but also regret, shame and guilt. The hall of the children was literally so unbelievably devastating to see. The imagery has burned itself in my brain and I cherish this memory to this day. I ugly cried all the way through. My heart has never been the same since I‘ve been there. The garden is such a beautiful way to honor the heroic life some have lived during that time.

I remember a television interview with her, sometime in the 70's, and being very impressed by her mental sharpness, her warmth, and her sheer humanity. She was in extreme old age at the time but was still full of life and enjoying every moment of it.

This episode was not only eye opening but well put together God bless Netflix may the royal saint princess Alice rest in peace amen

The interview never happened. The episode was designed to pay tribute to Princess Alice. People never found out what happened to her until after she died. Thanks for the love everyone! Now her son joins her, Rest in Peace Prince Phillip.

Without a doubt, “Bubbikins” is the best term of endearment of all time.

Sometimes the secrets we hide in the "attic" end up breaking barriers and saving a family. Honorable Princess Alice... A true hero. Much respect.

The way she stood there half-smiling as Philip read all of that back to her...she seemed proud through all her dedication and sacrifice after immense suffering and ridicule. She is one of my favorites from the show including Princess Margaret.

I believe she was actually touched by God and gave her strength to continue her life in service to others. Her story touched me deeply. I'm not much of a fan of royalties, but not this one. God bless you Princess Alice.

It always seems strange to me that people will say someone was touched by God, no doubt your particular God. Instead of just accepting that perhaps she was a good and decent person who did more than one would expect. You have to include the supernatural as if you are elevating yourself by declaring a divine thing happened. You take away from her actual actions by insinuating that there was supernatural aid and I find that insulting to people who do good work all on their own.

With everything working against her and most people not being able to mentally survive what she went though, she came out with compassion and action for people that is rarely matched. You may be agnostic which is your right, but I'd like to think that God had other plans for her. That of course is my right.

A very moving scene that was well acted. But more important to that is the actual person who was behind it. That is what I think we need to remember here. She was a real person and a person who suffered greatly. Especially from her family and her husband. But she turned her life around, devoted it to God, and made her life stand for something. I think that's a lesson all of us can and should take.

I'm only now starting to realize that the "fictional" parts that were added to somehow embellish the character of Princess Alice Battenberg/Princess Andrew of Denmark and Greece is the showmakers' way of actually paying tribute to and honoring posthumously this relatively unknown but truly heroic and saintly royal.

This is where Princess Anne gets it from . The hardest working royal

Clearly she was not accepted simply because she was deaf. She was above them all. People detest people who are different. Different? No. Pure. A pure generous heart.

I saw this episode at the perfect moment when I was so upset and angry at my mom. That was Mothers' Day. I think this episode healed a decades-old wound inside me.

I think Princess Alice is now my favorite Royal Princess ever! She embodied the greatness of being human. Very Saintly..

Helped Philip connect with his mother which helped him to regain his spirituality in the end. Beautiful.

Princess Alice was the niece of Elisabeth Romanov. Alice’s mother, Victoria of Hesse and By Rhine, was Elisabeth’s and the Tsarina Alexandra’s sister. Elisabeth became a nun after the assassination of her husband and Princess Alice also became a nun in later life. She deeply admired and loved her Aunt Elisabeth who was murdered in July 1918.

This was one of my favourite parts of The Crown. Princess Anne set her up to meet this guy, instead of her speaking to him...She wanted her Grand mother to tell HER story...It was so precious!!

And Princess Alice saved Jews during WWII by hiding them in her house - what an incredible woman.

Blessed are we for people like Alice. Sacrificial. Inspirational. Hopeful and gratious. What more does the world want?

This scene for me could probably be one of the best in the entire season. The way it was put out in context to the story of Princess Alice it really touches in a very emotional way. Beautifully done I hope this gives the Crown a Golden Globe.

She was treated unfairly and horrible and yet her faith in God is what kept her going a beautiful scene here between a mother and son relationship reunited ❤

This was my FAVORITE episode of the Crown. Acting, storyline, and screenplay were just superb. Above all, the story, though. Completely heartfelt without dissolving into sickly sweet sentiment. One of the best pieces of film I have EVER seen.

One of my favourite Crown scenes with one of the most impactful lines- “suffered more than the rest of us, worked harder than the rest of us and created more good than the rest of us.”. It’s deeply moving and very unforgettable.

3:22 - 3:44 - The pathos that she radiates without dialogue shows an actor of superb skill and wisdom. Jane Lapotaire has done so much theatre in Britain, but seemingly only briefly in the USA in Piaf for which she won the Tony award. Awards aren't necessarily a gauge of talent but I am glad as an American she did receive formal recognition here. And she has definitely been busy in her home country. Brava!

Never knew about this lady until this episode. I was touched to put it mildly. Hardship makes many people hard and cynical, not so here.

I cried watching this episode. Is was quite heartbreaking.

I hope deep down that man was incredibly proud of his mother.

I was so scared the interviewer would take advantage of her. Thank God he was kind and complimentary to her.

It was the first time I cried watching something on Netflix. During this episode that is. Powerful.

I cried so much at the end of this episode. My mom died young and I would give up everything I have to just have one more day with her. The way the actress played princess Alice is impressive. Is one of my favorite episodes of the whole series

whoever did the casting for the show should get a raise, allot of the actors look so similar to the irl characters

She's the most interesting person of the season.

I never knew the mother of Prince Philip and what she stood for until I saw this episode of The Crown. I felt a tremendous sense of empathy for her while I was watching. I cried when she finally had a conversation with her son. And then I cried some more when Prince Philip walked alongside his mother, Princess Alice, with their arms intertwined. What a lovely scene and a heartfelt tribute to Princess Alice.

I loved that she never reproached him for taking so long to visit her. She simply looked at him with great love. Good lesson for us all!

He kept in touch with her. She was in Balmoral in 1946 when Philip proposed to Elizabeth and was at his wedding. She also spent the last 2 years of her life with him and Elizabeth in Buckingham palace. So he wasn't ashamed of her. Growing up and world war 11 might have separated them for a while but he returned to her as soon as he was able.

This part of the series is absolutely brilliant. I cried again watching this clip. Jane Lapotaire was so wonderful.

One of my favorite episode from this season ❤️

This is a near perfect episode. I say near, but honestly I don't think there's a single flaw. And it's beautifully capped by this scene and the one that follows. Say what you will about this show but it had so often in the first several seasons a wonderful sentimentality and was at times extraordinarily personal. They treated Alice's story with grace and deserved dignity.

Beautiful but at times harsh back story the ignorance having a disability by those family members sending her away is heartbreaking her story is movie worthy

Rean Bean sadly that’s the way it was done right up til the 1970s

She is one of the best actresses I've seen and that includes Meryl Streep. Between this scene and the conversation with her brother, her expressions telegraph her feelings so well. Even the cough before pointing to her brain is so credible. I often listen to both scenes to see this fine actress apply her trade.

He loved his dear mother and had empathy for her

Very touched to learn about prince Alice’s story, she seems having no fear to live a life she really wanted to lead despite of difficulties that include her congenital hearing loss and many other distresses during wartime. I somehow think being religious doesn’t mean to blindly follow what is being told, it is deep caring to humanity gets resonated with people’s inner soul, which made them to stick to it firmly.

Bubbikins is my favorite episode in The Crown Season 3 ... super cried!!!

I truly loved the Princess Alice episode. We only see (the older) Alice in 2 episodes but we hang on her every word as she was a fascinating person. As many have said, she deserves her own movie/series. The life she led. A dark, tragic life but one in which she was a straight up heroine. They shouldve shown the scene with her brother Lord Mountbatten. It was sad that they didnt have more scenes together.

Love how the actress portrays Alices reactions when the interviewer finds out about the asylum situation. Like ‘yea so what I was put in an asylum’

My favorite Royal hands down. Her story is amazing!

She was a genuine soul. A fascinating story that not many knew about until it was brought to life on this show.

I almost cry in this part. Tobias is fantastic and the shocking moment who really knows the real life of his mother. Not only the crazy woman in the asylum. Alice is a survivor and she still have so much love and mercy for the people. 🥺👏

This was such a beautiful episode! Glad to get to know Princess Alice’s story. She was truly a jewel within the Royal Family 🥰

She truly lived s hard life she has titles and family treasures that she sold to help her church and poor people..she shows us and the royal family what we can do as humans.

This actress looks so much like the actual Princess Alice.❣️

A maligned lady with a heart of gold. Her " voices " as critics put it was the voice of St.Barbara. Anyway, she would give good to those that needed it and sold or just have her belongings away in order to help. Indeed, a wonderful lady with a heart of gold who had a wonderful son we know as Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh.

How sad that this is how I found out about one of the greatest people of our generation. I knew she was sent to a mental institution but I didn’t know anything further than that. How ashamed I was to of discredited her life as simply a disowned and mistreated royal, how ignorant I was.

What an absolutely amazing human being. She had the courage of a lion and the wits to match it. There is a great line in the movie “Iron-Jawed Angels” where a doctor says, “courage is often mistaken for insanity” in women. Saint Alice, one day, perhaps, in the Orthodox Church?

😭 honestly one of my favorite episodes in the entire series.

What an amazing woman ! I can now see where Philip gets his Strengh and some personality from !

I'm watching the Crown right now..when Phillip was a boy and he was in the boys school. RIP Prince Phillip 💕

If Princess Alice and Queen Mary has been alive and in the palace at the same time, I can’t image the antics they would have gotten up to!

Just finished this episode, and this is an absolutely wonderful season! Possibly my favorite, so far at least...’Faith is everything’ was the most beautiful take away and unexpected sentiment here. Bravo Crown, bravo💜👑💚

Each time that I watch these scenes, I am brought to tears.
