I still have posters and wallscrolls that are VS13 . I don't think I'll ever be able to get rid of them. I was so excited for this game, it's alittle reminder of what could have been

Rather than someone bitter and petty, I see the actions of Nomura as a man who had a story idea he really liked and is just dying to tell it.

They already look vastly different

Verum Rex is Latin for True King, similar to how Noctis is considered the true king

as much as i’d love to see Versus 13 fully revived, it just won’t be the same. Versus 13 was a much darker take on FF and i just don’t see Kingdom Hearts being allowed to take it there.

There's always the chance that it could be made into its own IP as Verum Rex. I have a feeling that KH4 could act as a step in garnering interest in the project, and maybe that was one reason it was decided to be developed first. That way, a case could potentially be made to Square to revive Versus as a standalone title if there's already a proven interest from consumers. Maybe they could even go so far as to alter the title to Versus Rex to be more blatant that this is what became of the concept in the end. Anyway, a title separate in name to KH might allow the possibility for the darker tone that Versus had promised. Regardless, KH can be pretty dark in its own right, so a Verum Rex game as a KH game still can be tonally different given the circumstances. I for one continue to hold out hope for the project in regards to Versus and its original concept living up to expectations despite how it might've changed. Honestly, even if it isn't the same as Versus exactly, that doesn't mean it will be a title that won't live up to that hope.

This. Versus XII was totally a product of its time. You could just feel it from the first trailers. It had almost a FF8 air about it, very early 2000s. As we can see from Verum Rex, if it were revived now it won't be the same at all. Especially since XV is very much a thing. As far as Versus XV goes, it's dead in the water for me... all I can do is just wait for more KH

Imagine if the next subtitled game in the series is Kingdom Hearts Versus XIII My jaw would completely fall off…

Dude, you're the only one so far connecting Lightning Returns to Verum Rex in Kingdom Hearts! Like, I felt it is somehow connected because of Yozora repeating "I will save you" similar to Lightning! And Yozora ended up in Final World, same with Lightning's task as a "savior" taking souls to a new world in Lightning Returns. I bet Yozora is some type of "savior" too. Crazy!

Thank you for mentioning Lightning and how she could possibly finally appear in the KH series. Like you said, the way her story ended creates a perfect segue into Quadratum, a world of reality. Would be cool to see!

I have a guess that Yozora is a departure from childhood to teen- young adulthood. A departure from innocence the series tries to tie on to. Sora explored and walked with disney characters and friendly folks for the most part. When evil struck, he had his friends by his side physically, at the sidelines, and his heart to guide him. But now he leaves it behind for the sake of love. And now he walks a path alone, with full intention of coming back home.... except we know it's not going to happen just yet. Enter Yozora. More or less a man filled with question marks I bet many folks were able to dig in deeper than I have. But when I see him, I don't think him living in a disney like world. He seems to be "living a fantasy in a reality" henceforth the vibes of versus xiii. This is an opportunity for Kingdom Hearts to abandon both final fantasy and disney connections and try to be its own thing. This world of "fiction". Now I'm not saying characters like Mickey or Leon will now be irrelevant from this day forward cause that's not true. Hell Maleficent and Pete are waiting for their comeback. We're guaranteed some fine disney/Final Fantasy action... but likely in doses. This is Nomura's opportunity to build more freedom with this franchise. Especially since Disney might be more stricter with their properties since they're a big thing now. I'm more than happy to see where it goes and disney freak out what they're missing out on because whatever behind the scenes money reasons to see Nomura's vision thrive without too much reliance on disney/pixar movies to keep the fuel going. Sora has found his place in the gaming world. And he can bring new things to the table. That is why we got Yozora. And I can't be more happier for that.

The Disney worlds, especially in 3, were usually confined to the original storylines with some stretches here and there (Mulan's world in 2 is probably my favorite example). KH4 is the opportunity for the series to do its own thing without relying on Disney storylines. I think it'll be better if the Disney characters are fleshed out and brought into a new light this time rather than telling their original stories again.

I’m just blessed as a fan. Sora is in Super Smash Bros Ultimate where he belongs and now we have Kingdom Hearts 4 on the way which seems to be very different but hopeful and promising.

I still feel Versus XIII in my bones. I hope you can bring this to life again in some shape or form in KH4/Verum Rex, Nomura.

This has the same vibes of Synder's JL, but Nomura's Versus XIII. AND it's gonna tie into Kingdom Hearts? MAN IM HYPED

I like Nomura. I think he's extremely creative, but he needs someone more practical to reign him in at times.

It's such a genius idea that Nomura is taking Versus XIII into Kingdom Hearts, no way for Square to say no unless Disney has anything to say about it.

Versus XIII was such a *fascinating* concept to me. I totally forgot that Noctis and Stella were originally supposed to *fight!* If this gets remade somehow in all it's glory then I'll be really happy

Verum Rex is "different" than Vs13 because the characters have different names lol Nomura is just making sure he doesn't rock the boat at Square so he can seed what he wants before he gets pulled off of a project again.

I’m in the minority who actually love FFXV (one of my fave FF’s after VII) but I am also SUPER excited to see the concepts of the lost Versus XIII implemented in these future KH titles. I love pretty much all of Nomura’s works so the fact we get to see his lost Versus ideas now play into his first original series is so exciting.

Great video. Really learned a lot about the troubled development of Final Fantasy Versus XIII/XV and seeing some interesting story concepts from the XIII games being included in Kingdom Hearts. Really intrigues me to play the XIII games again sometime. I remember being pretty excited for Versus XIII back when it was first shown.

One thing i can say, Square Enix LOVES fan speculatuon. Its one reason why the FF VII remakes have been so succesful, as well as Kingdom Hearts. Personally, i believe we'll see the third FF VII remake before Kingdom Hearts 4 or a Varum Rex game. Also, Lightning actually made her appearence in KH via the union x game.

i always love how Nomura incorporates architecture in to his art.

This has gotta be one of the most interesting theory videos I've seen, my theory is that what if sora landed in the world where the world ends with you takes place and where the persona games take place, what if in order for sora to return to the realm of light he has to help the phantom thieves of hearts steal the hearts of corrupt adults in order to return home

We deserve it ff versus 13 will be back

it was rumored that noctis can access the afterlife in his dreams, what if sora was already dead? (basing on the kh4 trailer, seing as they stated that it was some sort of after world for them) and after the fight yozora woke up triggering the revision of versus 13 trailer.

This is an idea. Apparently (I saw in another comment) that the characters Ham and Rex mistook Sora as Yozora. Maybe there is more credence to that theory you have there, my friend. "I've been having these weird thoughts lately. Like is any of this real or not?"

Knowing now that Nomura plans on making Verum Rex a real game, this can mean we'll get a lot of Versus XIII stuff there. Possibly even the gameplay we saw in the 2011 Versus XIII trailer.

Yoooo!! This has me Excited! Because the concept of being crystalized was a big knock on the door, if lighting truly shows up as a character (even if it's a secret boss)! I'll be happy, not to mention if lighting does become playable. Lighting could Teach Sora, how to do Transformation's proper and the Whole Class system from Commando to Sentinal! Similar to Keyboard Transformation's and switching outfit's even go so far as to Unlock Cosmetic's based on the keyboard transformation's your using! That be insane! Lighting can truly be a mentor to sora and teach him a couple thing's while he's in Yozora's world! Man. I absolutely love lighting. She my girl!

I REALLY hope Nomura continues hard down this path to the point of near revival for FFVS13. I was never much of a Final Fantasy fan, but I do remember hearing about Versus 13 and for some reason being super hyped. I have zero attachment to any FF games, but Lightning always drew me in for some reason, which is probably why I was drawn to the idea of V13 in the first place. Seeing the crystalized Lightning and Sora turning into crystal, it makes me hopeful for seeing a wider variety of Final Fantasy games getting representation in Kingdom Hearts, ESPECIALLY 13 (and 6, I like 6)

I’m remembering that NoName had the Master of Master’s one blue eye in it. I don’t think Yozora is the MoM, but it would be super interesting if they did use that concept of an all seeing eye, that’d be pretty dope.

I really like HMK videos. It's hard to parse through the detritus and find good KH content creators. I just saw a guy go on a 5 hour KH3 tirade claiming it to be a "waste of effort" only because Sora and Riku didn't kiss. Like, bro, I have problems with the game also but to call it a waste of effort? Really?

Best to let Nomura put as much versus 13 into KH so it can get out of his system. He will not let it go.

Bare in mind, Versus had a single crystal of which Noctis was to look after. The concepts about the Fe'lcie* and whatnot was for FF13 Lightning, but not for Versus. I also want to point out that in FF15 (as I am playing it now, cause I haven't played since launch). The Ragnarok Sword is very similar to the sword Yozora uses, too.

I used to anticipate for Versus 13, but the longer I waited, the less interested I became. I was pretty disappointed that version didn’t come true. Instead, FF15, aka, Road Trip Fantasy exists. So yeah, some wish I had.

theres also the nameless star and her voice actor on the japanese side is supposedly Stella's. either way, I think verum rex will incorporate Nomura's original concept of VSXIII and new ones brought up over the years since its been many years and things change. that's why I think he considers it "completely different" rather than outright denying it

I think this might not necessarily Nomura’s revenge, Square-Enix executive might also be interested for the unused concept and ideas (with potentials) of Versus XIII to be repurpose in other projects, something gam developers do.

Agreed and I kinda laugh when fans say this is "payback" when ??? How is it payback? 🤔 Nomura was very much overworked if memory is correct so while I'm sure his original idea for versus 13/15 would have been awesome to see, he stepped down to focus on his main series (kingdom hearts). Since 15 holds some elements to the original story (not all but maybe a base of the story with noctis going on a trip with his buddies) the original story that was meant to be for the 13 fabula story is well, no longer there because square wanted to pretend 13 doesn't exist (funnily same was as 15 which am salty about because at least 13 was finished) but also the long development it took, Nomura as he states is a story NO ONE fully knows. Yes we fans know what we see released but the entire story details is one we will never know, so probably best bet is he took maybe some concept ideas from that time and reworked it to be more fitting by upgrading the story and fitting it into kingdom hearts more. Thus I don't fully agree we are "seeing what versus 13/15 should have been" because no, Nomura states yozora's story won't be what people claim to be his original vision. Did he throw Easter eggs? Of course, why wouldn't he but he isn't doing this to be petty about how 15 turned out in the end (which imo fans need to chill about the game. It came out which is a success considering the long and very long time it was in development plus, it is a good game with flaws of course!) Just a creator simply reworking old ideas is all so I don't fully agree with fans on that idea but I do believe it's him doing an improved storyline of the versus idea he had but again, WE FANS WILL NEVER KNOW THE TRUE STORY! We cannot argue against that so who knows what was the full story of noctis. Anywhoo, a good and cool video because I do find it interesting if we could have a ff13 reference pop up which would be cool! With the new trailer for kh4 there Is so much I think they could do with this so I'm excited ^_^

I just want a continuation of Type-0 honestly. I hope FFXVI is successful enough for Square to give the green light to weird spin-off games like they used to. Not every Final Fantasy needs to be a tentpole release. They understandably can’t take too many risks on a mainline entry in the series but spin-offs can be anything. There’s clearly a demand for classic turn-based combat, tactical RPGs, and other random stuff based on recent releases by other developers. Adding the Final Fantasy branding would only further increase the amount of support it receives. The handful of games that have veered from the FF formula have become some of my favorites. Games like FFX-2, Crisis Core, Tactics, Stranger of Paradise, World of Final Fantasy, Crystal Chronicles, and Type-0 are all amazing in their own way and didn’t require a decade of development, a massive budget, and weren’t released with the expectation that they needed to prop up the entire company’s fiscal year. They felt like they came from a place of passion instead of being purely focused on profits and market saturation.

A world where Noctis+Sora+Lightning+Yosora ..... classic nomura mindblown

Sora achieving a focus...means he was given a focus by a falcie. But who was the falcie? Could Yozora be a traitorous falcie who walked away from his purpose just like Caius Ballad did when he didn't want to allow the seer to die after having watched every possible outcome in life? Remember his beloved Yeul had the eyes of the seer. Cursed to traverse through time, through different dimensions, to be separated by time and watch her death over and over again? Sora achieving his focus and Yozora telling him "I'll save you." Is a very lightning and Serah moment....even Serah had a "nobody" version of herself if you will after the real Serah died after having failed the timeline and being granted the vision of the farseers and the Goddess Etro was killed and lighting encapsulated in crystal watching over Valhalla for eternity in its stead. Lumina was manifested from Lightnings feeling of regret and anguish for having failed saving her sister. Imagine if Yozora is Noctis "Nobody" or vice versa. After Lighting the savior purged the God Bhunivelze asunder before he could destroy existence and recreate a new world as he saw fit without sorrow, the world they were already going to reincarnate to that Bhunivelze was to destroy was available...and they reborn anew without the God's in control. A new world with no name that looks realistic just like our own. And Lightning is now searching for Serah once again and her friends in this afterlife. An afterlife similar to that of this Quadratum. Where it's very similar to our own.

Why i have feeling that what Yozora supposed to have in role to Kingdom Hearts originally from what Nomura had with the original Noctis. I mean it's fits, Sora and co visit toy story world see an advertisement of versus xiii as opposed to Verum Rex, the secret ending feature Insomnia and Noctis as opossed to Shinjuku and Yozora and finally a boss fight with Noctis himself rather than Yozora. But since versus xiii got axed, Nomura need to build a new character entirely to get around it. I don't know what you guys think about this?.

People always bring up the Noctis similarities, but rarely point out that Yozora has basically identical clothes as Riku as a discussion point. Even the number of buttons on the flap of the jacket is the same.

What's impressive about this video, is it was released just before the kingdom hearts 4 video. You may be onto something.

I know people have mixed feelings about Versus XIII concepts being merged with KH. I for one, think this is exactly what the series needs. A darker turn! Plus, I am so excited to see a glimpse into Nomura’s original vision for the game. Luxord’s “Impressive, is it not?” Gives me chills! The only thing I will be sad about is leaving favorite characters like Roxas behind. I’m glad to see them happy and complete, but I really hope Nomura doesn’t just forget about them.

Versus XIII came across like "an edgier Kingdom Hearts" and a nonzero amount of fans wanted exactly that, so KH4 taking the series for the darker turn is welcome by us.

@@ultimamage3 I'd say Versus being cancelled and then used as the fuel for KH4 is happy accident and propably better choice. KH being based around cancelled game sounds pretty meta-level nonsense which can be more entertaining than any of those games alone. Overall it would be fun if series became sort of metaphor for all contract/trademark/company fuck-ups or outright broke 4th wall. That would more likely make it Nomura's magnum opus than another regular JRPG.

From the rumors and supposed leaks of people who worked on it, Versus XII was going to be way darker than KH could ever be allowed to go. It was inspired by Shakespeare with there being betrayal kills and GoT esque politics with warring nations and eventually Stella either being killed by Noctis or poisoning herself like Romeo & Juliet. I don't see KH doing any of that, Disney wouldn't have it and Square probably wouldn't in a mainline franchise. Which is why Versus XIII was so perfect, it was originally a spinoff meaning Nomura could do whatever he wanted like how Typo 0 did

Nomura and Sakurai have a few things in common. Both created and worked on multiple game franchises, and both have their most famous franchise be a huge crossover fest.

So basically versus 13 was always meant to be a game that would likely bridge Fabula nova crystalis and versus with the kingdom hearts universe. This likely heavily impacted kh3 and the type of characters that would be present, if any, from the final fantasy universe. It also may have impacted its development cycle also and explains why the game is so Disney heavy even compared to past kh games. KH may have been the light to the fab novas darkness before the change to ff15 breaking that bridge. But now yozora, sora, and Riku exist in quadratum, a place without concepts of light and dark.

2 things I am interested in: 1) The trailer essentially confirms ReMind's bad ending is actually canon. A lot of people haven't grasped this yet. That ending also included Sora being frozen in Quadratum for however long. We're so used to Sora being optimistic and hopeful, but KH4 is gonna start with Sora coming to terms about his loss to Yozora, and why they've switched places. 2) Speaking of switching places, because the Bad ending is now canon, this means Yozora is now on a path to run into Donald/Goofy among other characters. Whether they team up or not, I'm not sure. If Yozora runs into them, he will probably tell them where Sora is, but be reluctant to take them to him. I could see Yozora asking the two of them to help him fulfill his main purpose (finding the Nameless Star, who has lost her name). TLDR: Nomura successfully hijacked the series to setup a return for Yozora/Noctis, and I believe a huge part of KH4 is gonna feature him as a surprise protagonist to flesh out his story.

Sorry we got kingdom hearts 4 and a mobile game for this year 🙄 I was hoping we would get Verum Rex this year as the spin off game!
