Yokai is not spirit of the dead coming back to life. Yokai is just an umbrella term for all things supernatural in Japan's myth. There are several variants of dead spirit coming back to life, such as Yuurei (ghost), skeletons, ubume etc etc, these are all also yokai. But there are also inanimate objects who gain sentience after hundreds of years, such as the karakasa umbrella (these variant of yokai are called tsukomogami) ,and animals who live for so long they gain supernatural power like the bakeneko. There are also yokai which just exists as a part of natural order of things, such as Kasha who carries undead spirits to realm of the dead known as Yomi. Kasha is basically Japanese version of Greek Charon, and she is a yokai too.

One thing that might help is to think that almost all of the main characters existed in real life. The story is pretty much the same, minus the fact that Yokai and spirit stones aren't real. Nobunaga was a real person, and so was Hideyoshi. Hideyoshi served under Nobunaga but eventually took over from Mitsuhide and ruled Japan for a while until he died as well.

There's a jump in time, but this conveys the massive amount of ground to cover over that century, with the drastic shift from the rise of Oda, his betrayal by his vassals and then the consolidation of power briefly by Toki/Hideyoshi. The way they presented the plot twist and then the jump in time, to me, is correct.

@@TyTimeIsAwesome Yeah, gameplay is incredible. I think Hideyoshi came to power quickly after the death of Nobunaga sometime in the mid-to-late 1500s. In the game, he was still a younger man when he became the Daimyo. We do not dethrone him I think until a few years later when he gets older. Basically, he did a lot of harm but in the end came back to his senses before his death, kind of like Darth Vader.

I also confused at first but after Nobunaga said "You both resemble to Nioh guardian" I understand his reference. Tokichiro and Protagonist (who canonically named after his/her father late name "Hidetatsu" and then called as Hide because of those shattered sohayamaru got "Hide" engraved on it) is a duo who got their rank up in no time, Nobunaga see them like Nioh guardian, the entity that's guarding Japan, usually they portrayed as two men with a devil face and got this entity-like appearance. Because tokichiro and hidechiyo is inseparable duo, tokichiro decide to beg nobunaga called them Yoshihide at first, but then nobunaga decide the name as Hideyoshi in the end. Same like Ni-oh "仁王" they're called as one, but they actually 2 separate entity.

I mean, in the game's lore, especially the DLC, there was a time when the yokai and humans were at peace. Otakemaru is literally the protagonists flesh and blood.

Its beyond me why some people enjoy reading their video games via subtitles. Am I the only one that HATES subtitles? The language barrier almost ruined this amazing game for me. I'm glad I completely ignored the story when I played it. Otherwise I would have dropped the game within the first hour.

The very idea that people didn't understand the story confuses me, while the games gives : - dialogues before and after each mission - cutscenes - explanations for the cutscenes in the hutt - context about every character you meet and their actions, again in the hutt - the last thoughts of the dead scattered through the levels I mean, yes, if you know absolutely nothing about the period you might be lost a bit about the significance of the characters and their actions at first, but the game give you everything to understand. I mean, it isn't that hard to piece together even without the content of the hutt right ? right ?... Also, I wished the story, while not bad, was better, for exemple that Hide wasn't completely silent or unable to express his interests. I mean, I know he/she is basically a disowned and unknown child, but Hide is still the half-sibling of Nohime and thus the brother/sister in law of Nobunaga, and is also the twin of Tatsu, who took the head of the Saito clan. Hide could have taken the place of Tatsu very easily as head of the clan in a bolder story. In regard to your video, I would advise you to modulate your voice a little more, the monotone take away some of the interest. Also, I would suggest you to give a little more details : despite being a "deep dive", you gloss over a lot of details. Also, the images of the video, especially on the later half, are not in synch with what you are saying, and it's quite destabilizing.

Thank you for watching and giving your thoughts. I agree that I can work on some things. I did want to include a few more details, for example, about Nobunaga introducing guns into combat and maybe a few more little things. I will try to improve on future vids :)

I can’t understand the story because i have ADD, and I don’t like reading. That’s why this video is very helpful. Also, politics and Japanese names are hard to keep track of, and this game has plenty of both.

Surprises me quite a bit that people are this lost on the story. The entirety of the story is explained through main missions and even side missions. Not a nary detail is left unchecked really.

I really enjoyed it. It made me become fascinated with the time period. You have to consider, I hope, that there's more to a story than the writing. The way Nioh 2 is told visually doesn't get enough credit.

The video is a bit too fast. Pause a bit more, after a sentence for a second, and for a few seconds after a paragraph / sub-topic or idea. The subtitles are not able to translate some things well, so perhaps work on enunciating / pronouncing words more clearly.
