I think the concepts you covered such as financial prudence and not taking leverage is very good.

Your analysis and thought process is spot on. We all win and loose here and there but with this philosophy (if you adhere to it in the long long run), you’ll do just fine!

Daniel zhang just stepped down as baba’s cloud head after stepping down from ceo.. doesnt look good fundamentally though. The business definitely makes money but given the current political climate where xi is displaying behaviour to maintain power vs those who question his rule.. i feel at this point it’s a value trap stock (given baba’s historical challenge to his rule) He is capable of destroying companies/ affecting livelihood just to maintain power, even at the inconvenience of the people - evidenced by what happened to TAL and how flood waters were diverted from beijing to neighbouring cities.. I feel for u, but every moment hope is pinned on cn stocks is opportunity cost on other stocks.. I cut my losses a few yrs back immediately after observing what the ccp did to TAL - ie it doesnt mattwr how much value or money a listed biz is doing, as long as there are political ramifications, that risk remains

I think with index funds you should either go 100% or do the satellite strategy (~90% index funds, ~10% bets). Having a small position in an index fund is neither gonna move the needle for your portfolio nor substantially reduce risk. Once you own largely equal positions in 5-10 stocks, you're plenty diversified already IMO, might as well go all the way.

Similar situation. 80% in Chinese equities, Hong Kong and Shanghai markets, but another 20% in the Korean market too. I'm capping Chinese equities too. Probably should have done earlier. Will build up US and other global equities over the next 10 years. Have 20% in a money market fund about $50,000 but will increase to about 80 this year. Hoping for a US recession to kick start that part of my portfolio. Add another $300,000 over for the next 10 years and should set myself up fairly well. See what happens later this year. Let's go recession:)

I like your philosophy but I've been gradually fading out as we are in the US election cycle. Most Americans believe China is the root of all evil. The Chinese arguments against the US are basically correct and Taiwan invasion talk is farfetched. But the US have successfully drawn back most emerging market capital so they have no interest in easing relations. So for the next year ADR / VIE stocks will be range bound, with the exception of PDD and BYD.
