The Story of Millie-Christine McKoy: Contemporary Questions about the Historic Circus

In this live-recorded lecture by scholar Betsy Golden Kellem, we learn more about Millie-Christine McCoy, conjoined twins born into slavery who ultimately took agency over her own identity and used it to become wealthy and influential in her community.

Wonderful lecture. I am the daughter of a dancer in the A.G. Barnes circus in 1928. She didn't talk much about her experience, but she did tell me a few stories. One of them was that the performers were given responsibility for making sure the animals were properly cared for. My mother was given responsibility for an elephant named Babe. Babe had been captured wild. She was a teen aged elephant and mom made sure she was properly fed and watered and groomed. She didn't do it, but made sure it got done. She and Babe bonded, but after the Barnes circus went bankrupt in 1929, she never found out what happened to Babe. I only have 2 pictures of my mom at the time & one of them is a photo with Babe. I'd love to know more. Right now there is a campaign to free 2 old and arthritic elephants from a circus and send them to a refuge. They are having to give rides to tourists. They are both in pain and clearly mistreated.

Thank you for sharing her life. As a descendant of Millie Christine my grandmother has told us her stories so we can pass the information and uplift the Welches Creek community.

I missed the opportunity in buying a book, which featured images of their anatomical join. I use to be afraid of twins like this, but got over it in early 2004. And can't get enough of them, always looking for new and old ones not well known to the public.
