The Story of Liverpool's Spice Boys

I am looking back at the Liverpool from my childhood, the mid 90s SPICE BOYS era.
I look at how it started, who were the worst culprits, how the team changed after Souness, and of course, the infamous white suits! I also look at key results and examine the PL Tables from that era, to see how close they really came!
Huge thank you to @Theflynnfella for the great suggestion!!
Let me know if you enjoy these kinds of vids, and if you have any suggestions on other Liverpool topics!

Fowlers book is very interesting talking about the start of Houllier era. Effectively systematically selling all spice boys/booze players such as Babb, McAteer etc

I have mixed feelings about this period. Roy had us playing some absolutely wonderful football, and after the Souness years it felt like we made great strides back towards being a top team, we just didn’t seem mentally strong enough in the big games or when it really mattered. I loved the pass and move footie, and had some good youngsters coming through, just never seemed able to make that final step to truly challenging for the title.

That game was horrible and neither side deserved to win really but yeah that goal was a knife in the stomach. HOWEVER! I totally disagree that Liverpool winning that match would have changed their mindset. If anything it would've made them worse and acted as confirmation of their big time charlieness. Win or lose those lads were on the booze. Needed a culture change at the club and no poxy FA Cup win over utd was gonna fix that overnight. Wishful thinking on redknapps part imo.

"Evans being hands off" is a weird one for me. I agree, that's how it felt, but it really shouldn't have done considering he'd been a coach at various levels at the club for many years before taking the hot seat. I put it down to his persona in the (relative to today) few interviews and news articles we had access to at the time... yes kids, there was a time the internet did not exist. Great vid Andy, more please!

Ah, funny you mention that Villa game in 1994/95, as looking back that was a 'downing tools'/ season's over game. WTF For all the talent, they needed a spine; a top keeper, centre half, and reliable midfielder - with the ability to dig in, and grind out results. The Newcastle/ Coventry back to back games sums them up. And from memory Utd were no better in the Cup Final, in fact they were just as poor - but managed to scrape a win. And then the nadir; finishing 4th in a two horse race in 1996/97......

  • @andycantwell

Watching the game in Dublin in 96, load of United friends/fans next to me. As soon as those clowns rolled (Babb, McAteer, Scales, James, et al) out in Barry White (no pun) garb of almost parody proportions I knew we were doomed, the game was abs trash and I hate losing to that lot but karma and putting us out of our misery was the most we deserved

No, i do not think so Liverpool never really competed with man utd when man utd were good Just like when liverpool were good, man utd did not really compete against liverpool Although they say liverpool, and man utd are biggest rivals in epl, they never actually competed at same time for the english top league. Yep, liverpool and man utd are massive north west england rivals, they never actually were ever good at the same time. That means they never actually went head to head over and over again for the league. That liverpool team did not compete really with man utd back then. Liverpool were finished as a league competing team with paul merson scoring winner at anfield in 1991, just after king kenny resigned for no reason from liverpool, and left liverpool with the run in against arsenal with no manager. They never competed for the league again the rest of the 1990s In 2002 i think they came 2nd, but in reality were not competing with arsenal that year for league. After 1991, liverpool never really competed for league again till suarez was playing for them, that year they threw it away at crystal palace. So that was over 2 decades later.
