Benny is such a good guy. I love how he pulls down Lil Ze’s arm multiple times in the film when Ze is about to shoot someone. Benny was the only real friend that Lil Ze ever had. Its very important to recognize that fact.

Most of the actors in City of God had no previous acting experience. Fernando Meirelles wanted that so the performances were effortless and natural. But the child actor who plays Lil’Dice, Douglas Silva, delivered a performance that still blows my mind to this day!!! Like, Im in awe with his acting everytime I watch his scenes! Douglas managed to portray his character with such ease and presence, that even Meirelles and some of the most seasoned actors on set could not believe that was his first time acting. The way he delivers the lines, the cadence and the expressions make for what is honestly, in my opinion, one of the best performances I have ever seen from such a young actor. Btw he grew up in a poor neighborhood in Rio, but his family was really religious, so the environment he was raised in was not the same as Lil’Dice/young Lil’Ze, which is even more impressive. Sadly, he had a hard time following a career in acting after the movie for a myriad of reasons, most noticeably the lack of opportunities for young black actors in Brazil’s audiovisual industry. He recently came back to the public eye after participating in the most famous reality show in the country and has expressed an interest in going back to acting.

Interesting... Almost no Brazilian noticed this. This necklace is called "guia" (guide) and belongs to an Afro-Brazilian religion called "Umbanda". There are several colors and each one of them represents an entity. In this case, the red and black guia represents Exú Sete Caldeiras. There are also several types of "Exú", and this one is probably one that inhabits cemeteries. They usually manifest through possessions, so the person talking to Lil dice is actually the entity Exú.

great placement, as a Brazilian and Afro-descendant I can clarify that, yes, he was hurt by the knife, because he raped the girl and did not take off the amulet... here in Brazil there is a religion called candomblé, it is a religion of African origin that came to Brazil, along with our ancestors is a variation of voodoo ... anyway... he had done a ritual of closing the body, where he received a new name, is consecutively the amulet, which is strictly forbidden to have sex by pointing.

Lil Ze was never disrespected by his true underlings, which the runts were not. The runts literally joined Lil Ze’s outfit the same day they killed him, and he’s the one that personally gave them the guns they used on him. The runts always hated him for that foot incident, and Ze completely forgot about them and didn’t read the signs when they were giving him an attitude when he was passing out the heat.

One of the things I like most about this film that almost no one talks about is the religious reference. The moment when Lil Z decides to enter drug trafficking and goes to consult a medium in the cemetery is very remarkable. And represents the Quimbanda religion very well here in Brazil. Religion that suffers a lot of religious intolerance here, especially from Christians. But it is important to remember that things start to go wrong for the lil z after he fornicates using the protective collar, which here in Brazil we call a “Guia”. The medium, who was incorporated by the entity “Exu 7 Caldeiras”, handed the Guia to Lil Z as a form of protection. When he rapes the girl of Knockout Ned, the camera focuses precisely on the Guia, and that's when we see him signing his death warrant. I believe that Exu already predicted what would happen, as there are many bad men like lil Zé whose destiny is marked by death. And the moment he sets foot in the cemetery to consult Exu, the justice begins to unfold. Because Quimbanda follows the law of justice. What goes around comes around 🔥🎩🔱 Laroyê Exú 🚬

I don’t understand the significance of the transition of him first being known as Lil Dice when he was a child to him getting older and becoming Lil Zé, since he was just as violent and brutal when he was Lil Dice. They should’ve portrayed it as he became increasingly more and more violent as time passed instead of him starting off violent when he was already a young child.

My favorite scene in the film is when Exu Sete Caldeiras grants power to Lil'l Ze, but warns him that he cannot have sex with the sacred amulet (Here in Brazil it is called a Guide), at that moment he seals Lil'Ze's fate , because he already warns that he will have the power he seeks so much, but from the moment he leaves there he will reap everything he sowed, and when he rapes Mané Galinha's wife it was the end point of his journey, it was there that everything The power he had guided him to a crossroads where all paths led him to certain death, just observe that after this act his decline begins. I think this scene is cool, showing a complexity that goes beyond the physical, and becomes spiritual as Exú's power follows a dualistic aspect, it is an entity that flows between good and evil, he grants power, but warns you that In this life everything we do returns. Whoever sows death inevitably reaps death
