A running theme I’ve noticed about SNK is they aren’t afraid to move around the title of protagonist. First Ryo, then Terry, Kyo, and K’. I actually like the idea of rotating the main protagonist, keeps things fresh.

Kyo is a character who heavily influenced much of my appearance in my Teens. From his hairstyle to even the Black Leather Jacket he started to wear in 2003 which inspired me to get one. Heck, I even want the "Best Arrange" version of his KOF99 Song "Tears" played at my funeral. ^_^

Kyo is one of my favorite fighting games characters since i start playing Kof when i was little kid alongside with street fighter and tekken 🔥

Kyo was always my favorite KOF Protag And I am glad to see the main face of the KOF Franchise getting the attention he deserves

Couple small things you missed: Canonically Kyo did help in the fight against Igniz, at least according to the novelization. Initially Igniz beats K's team, but Kyo, Iori, and Kula snuck aboard the spaceship and into NESTS' base. So K', Kula, Kyo, and Iori were the ones who beat Igniz. Also Those From the Past literally came from the past, which is why Saiki had to retreat into the gate when it was closing; Ash didn't just jack Saiki's power (and his spirit by accident), he stole some of the orbs used to keep the gate open. When the gate shut, it created a time paradox obliterating Saiki and Ash. Because of that the events of the Ash saga get nope'd out of existence, and KOF was actually completely incident-free those years, which made it become legit and allowed Antonov to buy the rights. So Verse is basically what you get when you completely screw with time like that. Also Khronen isn't really a new character. He's K9999 from 2001 redone/redesigned/retconned into less of an Akira ripoff. SNK really didn't like the original character.

Kyo Kusanagi has been one of my favorite fighting characters in KOF for a long time. I got study his history more while learning about the Orochi Saga, N.E.S.T.s chronicles, Tales of Ash, and the Shun'ei arc in KOF XIV.

Actually what Krohnen was referring to was Kusanagi, Kyo's clone who was created by Chizuru he even says in the trailer: "you ain't the same guy but that's a face i gotta punch". (They even have a special intro in 2002) Also Krohnen's real idendity is K9999, he has the same moves, color scheme, personality and it was basically confirmed from one of his quotes in the beta and the website story for his team.

He wasn't lying when he said Kyo stay dripping. I've only ever played demos of KoF and Capcom vs SNK as a child. But even still i recognize and remember the fit Kyo had. He reminds me of Trunks from DBZ in his first appearance. But like set to 11. Both Kyo and Trunks really have the same energy. Saying "Yeah imma eff you up but i know imma look good while doing it. You get blood on my jacket, I'll use your face to wipe it off.c

Krohnen's history with Kyo is pretty loaded for reasons outside of the actual plot. Krohnen's original appearance was in 2001 as "K9999" and his design was inspired by Tetsuo from Akira, but it was more blatant compared to Kyo's Akira inspiration. Since both were inspired by the two rivals though, K9999 had special interactions with Kyo's clone in 2002 known as "Kusanagi," where they basically reenact some moments from Akira. For reasons unclear, K9999 was scrapped in 2002UM and was replaced with another character known as "Nameless." He was essentially another take on the Kyo clone idea with his own little story. Both K9999 and Nameless remained absent for a while until KOFXV announced that K9999 would be returning as Krohnen. And when they showed him talking to Kyo, he's referring to his past interactions with Kusanagi in the previous 2002 game. As a side note, it's also worth mentioning that the voice actors for Kusanagi and K9999 were also the voices actors for Akira and Tetsuo, respectively.

In all honesty, K49 was just... Bad. Nameless was essentially the better version of him, but now that he's back as Krohnen, he has the same moves, but they're wildly stronger, offset by very short combos to make it slightly harder to delete your life bar in one go. Slightly. Akira's VA (and by proxy, the creator), was completely on board with the references, and wouldn't have voiced K49 if SNK was at risk of getting sued. Apparently, SNK just didn't like his design. Probably unrelated, Krohnen's MAX Super was changed from the super gore-y body disfiguration thing (also a reference) to be censored via making it a cybernetic thing (as well as just being more cybernetic in general, though that's far from a complaint), and he now has Tetsuo's scarf and honestly just looks so much cooler. He has beef with Kyo/Kusanagi partly because funny Akira reference, as well.

When I was a kid, KoF is my 2nd fighting game I got into and I played it on a Nokia N-Gage. Really appreciate you doing the "main character" of the series Also, how bout you do history of Sam Fisher

King of Fighters: Another Day is really good. Daiki Kasho, the composer, did a nice job with the tune "Regret." Surprisingly enough, in Maximum Impact 2/Regulation A, Kyo is just as fierce as the likes of Terry Bogard, Geese Howard/Nightmare Geese, K, Ninon Beart & Fiolina Germi - Those last two being quite the surprise, especially given what you could get away with in that game when playing as either one.

Couple of things: - the winning team in 2003 was the Ikari warriors, while K’ and his team are the ones who defeated Mukai. - Igniz was actually defeated by Kyo, Iori, K’ and Kula’s efforts combined. - Krohnen is actually K9999(pronounced K 4-9) who is a “perfected” version of K’ which is why he has beef with both Kyo and K’

Kyo is one of the best characters SNK has ever made (thank you SNK). Yeah sure I tried Iori, K', Terry, classic & ''cool'' guys blah blah blah, but eventually I got so sick of them that I use them a practice dummies. Kyo on the other hand, is forever, I can't get enough of him. Always've been a fan of him since KOF '97 (my first game thank you very much) & forever he will be my absolute favorite. Esaka Forever! KUSANAGI NO KENDA!

I love KOF and Kyo, but my favorite protagonist is Ash, cause sometimes it takes a real man to be best girl

Long term KOF/SNK fan here. Love the video btw. Whilst I'm not a fan of Kyo, nor do I think he's one of SNK's best characters (that honour would go to Terry/Geese), his influence and existence in the KOF Universe and even SNK crossovers up to a certain point was extremely important and crucial to the success of SNK in the mid-90s. Nowadays KOF is one of the only reasons SNK is still in the game (though with the release of Samurai Shodown and the upcoming release of Metal Slug Tactics, this may no longer be the case). First of all I hope you had a Happy new year Donte and second yes you should cover more of the characters. I still find it funny that it only took till KOF14 and 15 for a lot of people to be like like this series is awesome now completely forgetting that KOF13 exist. And I agree 13 had some really great 2d sprites, and as proven by GG, BB, Granblue and Dragon ball FighterZ, 2d fighting games is not dead. Looking at the footage again makes me realize how much I really do like the 2D art style and overall, Kyo is a character I like a lot and while he may have lost his main protagonist status in the games, he at least changes his outfit from game to game Versus Ryu who STILL wears that same dame gi lol. I know I know fighting game protagonist but come on Ryu lol. Anyway nice video to start up the new year and again excellent work Donte!!!!!

I just realized something Kyo in KoF15 has a lot on his plate as he is responsible for the three sagas: On the Orochi saga, he is the Kusanagi heir, which is one of the tree stooges that seals said entity for god knows how long, plus with the appearance and revival of the New Faces team (Yashiro, Shermie, Chris), it's going to be a pain to deal with On the NESTS saga, he is the prime template of a lot of branching Kyo clones like K' and Krohnen (K9999) because of his qcfx2+p move canonically being the strongest that made NESTS kidnap the guy And a correction: on the fight against Igniz, K's team wasn't enough to beat him, so they inserted another token and a team composed of K', Kula, Kyo, and Iori formed enough to finally beat the shithead On the Ash saga he has to deal with the asshole hero Ash and the clan from taking the Orochi powers to themselves, plus, we don't know much of Ash's future plans since Saiki is basically gone, and history may repeat itself for Ash (Stealing the treasures or smth to stop Orochi) Now on this saga, it's basically gonna be a looooong throwback for his adventures + in the new saga he's going to be responsible for Shun's improvement (which he denied because of the re:orochi threat) I feel bad for kyo in general lol

Wouldn't really make him repsonbile for those three sagas. Just as significant part of each.

I have been in love with this series my whole life. Great lore video. Props for staying focused on Kyo. A lesser man would have been distracted by all the other badasses in the series.

Thing about KoFXIII, the story protagonist in that one is pretty much Elisabeth - she has the closest connection to Ash, she's listed 1st practically everywhere in the game's GUI whenever characters come up, and her powers are light-based, opposite to Saiki's. Kyo's role in that story was more about the threat of being targeted like Chizuru and Iori were for their powers, since Saiki intended to use Orochi to power his time travelling - not the strongest connection, but for NESTS he was only used for his powers too.

This was dope ! Glad you used a LOT of Shinkiro's old 90's artwork. When I was a kid I disliked them, but now I kinda think they have a special kind of aura. KOF15 waiting room. We are back at it again, and this time with top tier online netcode.

They switched from 2D to 3D because the sprites were too expensive to make. In the case of XIII, they literally had to spend $1,000,000 to make a single character model. This was why they actually had to reuse a few models in XIII to fill out the roaster. Hence they switched to 3D models for XIV. It's the same reason why ASW switched over as well. ASW were able to find a way to make 3D models look like 2D sprites, something that no one else has been able to do so far.

Not to correct anyone, but Rugal's name is (according to SNK) pronounced "Roo-GAHL Bern-stine." And Goenitz's name is (once again, according to SNK) pronounced "GEH-nitz". Anyway, there's a KZreadr named "ShoryuGame" who knows a heckuva lot more about KOF lore than I do. All in all, however, excellent job on this video.

Correction on some plotllines: - Iori debuted in 95, so he wasn't really beaten up by Kyo on a consistent basis nor they personally know each other prior to 95. - Kyo didn't team up with Iori and Chizuru in the 97 until they faced Hakkeshu and Orochi - Igniz actually beat K' and his team to a pulp. He only lost with the combined efforts from K', Kyo, Iori and Kula together. - Magaki is the host of KOF XI, not Rose and her brother - Team Elisabeth won XI and probably XIII too. On alternate timeline, there's also the KOF EX if you have played it on Game Boy Advance

Happy New year!! I'm watching this late but I got to it. I can't say I knew anything because I never played any SNK games but now I know.

What I like about Kyo is that he's actually pretty fucking dense. Dude is a dumb-dumb. He's very good at fighting and absolutely terrible at anything else, like a fit and young George Constanza (with fire powers). I love the KOF XIII special ending with Ryo, Terry and Kyo, where it shows the dreams of each of the protagonists, Ryo dream is to have money to keep his dojo open, Terry dreams of having a respectful job, with a beautiful wife and Kyo dreams of actually finishing high school and making his dad proud.

Could come to the premier because it's like 2 in the morning in my country, sure is dope like always. Ps: happy new year

They made a anime out of this an virtua fighter english dub is 26 Episode but 35 in Japanese. King of fighter is 4 episode

Actually or 11 Shingo was the guy who got Iori and Kyo to work together on Chizuru's request. They originally said fuck that its not even worth it but reluctantly agreed when shingo convinced them otherwise.

Every time I hear about the NESTS saga I learn some new wild shit and I'm even more surprised that people just let SNK jump the shark like that lmao
