The Story of Empress Eugenie and her Jewels

Ойын-сауық

As Empress of the French and wife of Emperor Napoleon III from 1853 until 1870, Eugénie de Montijo was the fashionable face of the Second French Empire. Despite controversies surrounding her suitability for the role, she was an icon for the flourishing luxury industries in Paris and was described as “perhaps the last Royal personage to have a direct and immediate influence on fashion.” It was her patronage that helped launch the careers of designers like Cartier and Boucheron, craftsmen like Louis Vuitton, and couturiers like Charles Frederick Worth.

I recently acquired an original watercolor of her. In it, she’s wearing a tiara and a beautiful bracelet. She sure loved her jewelry!

Ena (Queen Victoria of Spain) was Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom's granddaughter and the godchild of Eugenie, so Eugenie who lived after exile on the estate of QV most likely gave her jewelry to her goddaughter. She no children left to live it too, and did give Ena pieces of her jewelry.

It’s almost as if she had no home in her old age and traveled around to here and there and I too feel sad for her life almost like the old saying. Heavy is the crown

She wasn’t visiting a friend but her relatives from the Alba family as her sister was the former Duchess of Alba. However, she passed away around 1860. Eugenia passed away in 1920!

Si 1 (‘Slightly included, level 1’) is quite a way from ‘flawless’). Here are the clarity grades, listed from Flawless down to I3: Flawless IF (Internally Flawless) VVSI (Very, very slightly included) VSI (Very slightly included) SI1 (Slightly included grade 1) SI2 (Slightly included grade 2) SI3 (Slightly included grade 3) I1, I2, I3 (many inclusions [flaws] visible to the naked eye; rarely used in fine jewelry) The ideal diamond would be a D colour, IF stone of Excellent polish and symmetry, zero fluorescence, preferably a Type IIa (from the former Golconda mines in India). Such a stone rarely turns up at auction, especially above 2 carats (VERY few could afford such a diamond).

Eugenie’s True Power lay in the fact that she had the face of an innocent angel-but a personality & will that was hard as rocks- and often, cold as ice. (When she learned that Napoleon had surrendered to the Germans, but was alive, she fell to her knees, screaming, “Why didn’t he at least have the decency to DIE like a REAL man?”)
