The Story of Alfred the Great | The Saviour of England

In the annals of English history, the name Alfred the Great resonates with the echoes of valor, wisdom, and resilience. Born in the late 9th century during a time of relentless Viking invasions, Alfred ascended to the throne of Wessex in the year 871, inheriting a kingdom on the brink of collapse. His reign, marked by unwavering determination and strategic brilliance, earned him the epithet "the Great." Alfred's enduring legacy as the saviour of Wessex lies in his remarkable ability to transform adversity into triumph, ultimately preserving the spirit and identity of his kingdom .As the King of Wessex from 871 to 899 AD, Alfred's legacy transcends his time, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural, political, and intellectual foundations of England.
Alfred born into royalty would have the enormous task of defending Wessex from the Viking invaders who had already taken the ancient Kingdoms of East-Anglia and Northumbria. The neighbouring Kings were dropping like flies and it would be up to Alfred to defend the Last Saxon Kingdom in England. This is his story.

Despite all his victories, Alfred was the Great for a different reason. At a time when kings gifted others with wealth, Alfred gifted his nobles and allies with books. He valued knowledge over wealth. That's why he is the only English monarch called the Great. Canute wasn't English but Danish.

I do love the story of Canute as well. I was raised with the telling from the perspective that Canute was deeply humble and pius. It troubled him greatly that his people put him on a pedestal and were close to revering him. So.he led his court to the shores of the sea, where he had his throne carried to the line of the tide. There he stood, raised his arms, and loudly commanded.the sea to stop ebbing and flowing. Of course it did no such thing, and Can it's turned and reminded his nobles that, while he was a king there was much that only God in His wisdom and Providence had in His sole control. Great story. The other version I heard much later in life a version that Canute was vain and power hungry and humiliated himself by trying to command the sea. I like my earlier and more familiar story better.

@@ohmightywez Yes, I find it a pity that both Canute and (St) Olaf are portrayed in such a one dimensional way in “Vikings Valhalla.” It’s not the actors’ faults, rather it’s the scriptwriting. Today it seems a lack of imagination as well as a lack complex character development has become the norm in writing. I appreciated the more complex characters of “Vikings,” although it left a lot to be desired in terms of historical accuracy. But at least that show made the Vikings much more like humans beings with their own loves, fears, family life, etc.,rather than killing machines. Although the last episode’s (season 2) political maneuvering of “Vikings Valhalla” was fascinating and had many twists and turns, Canute was not much more than a deceitful, power-hungry Viking with a sword in his hand and furs on his shoulders.

Just recently discovered how much I LOVE this time period. I've been reading and reading about Alfred and the late Dark Ages (...which were anything but dark, plagues and Vikings, aside. Alfred brought great learning to England and stressed the need of education. He also was devoutly Christian and supported scriptoriums that were known to copy the Bible and other texts. He loved the arts and supported those who worked as craftsmen.) Sadly, the many don't know about the illness that was the cause of his death. Recent scholarship has confirmed it was either Crohn's or ulcerative colitis (more likely the first). He had inflammatory bowel problems throughout his life, which makes his accomplishments all the more amazing, as well as his command of battle strategy and his strength as a warrior. He was no wimp. He fought alongside his men. At times, he became extremely ill and would run fevers during his IBD flares. He struggled with maintaining proper nutrition. He is a declared Saint of the Roman Catholic Church is recognized in the Anglican/ Episcopal Churches as well as Lutheran. His feast day is Oct. 26th. The "Anglo-Saxon Chronicles" is now available in English and is considered on of the earliest histories of England (along with the Venerable Bede). The "AS Chronicles" is a book full of cultural insights of the time! If you are interested in the time period, be sure to read the Chronicles! Superb documentary!!! The artwork was stellar. Well done, you!

It's a great show plus its sequel movie Seven Kings Must Die!!! I love to watch shows about all the Monarchs of every country. I love & enjoy watching & sharing your videos, thank you so much!! See my note. I suffer from IBD and I can testify that flares are debilitating without treatment, and can even kill. (Mine comes from Ankylosing Spondylitis, a systemic inflammatory disorder.) Most don't understand Crohn's and UC. ( Same sort of inflammatory process but in different parts of the intestines. Crohn's is in the small intestine.) During flares often persons aren't able to absorb nutrients from foods and there is unending diarrhea. Severe dehydration is possible. IBD, at its very worst, can definitely kill. Last bout, I was hospitalized for ten days and pumped full of steriods to try to reduce the inflammation. Sometimes, it can mean removal of part of the bowel. Nasty diseases, both UC and Crohn's. I am amazed, due to these things, that Alfred accomplished so much in life. Makes him all the more admirable knowing personally what he endured! And yes, it can be extraordinarily painful. I can't imagine him fighting for his life against Vikings with this disorder. Yet, I'm sure he did.
