The Story of Aethas Sunreaver - Part 1 of 2 [Lore]

Ойындар

A little while ago I did a video on Aethas as he became the new follower for the mage. A fair few comments were made about the Purge of Dalaran so I figured, why not dive deeper into his story and talk about what this blood elf is all about! I hope you'll enjoy!

    This has nothing to do with Aethas but I'd like to point out how the Focusing Iris is literally the worst guarded relic in all of Azeroth, first the Horde steal it to make it into a mana bomb and now Xylem's made off with it under the Legion's command, sure he's defeated by the classes who take on that trial but regardless it was still stolen from under whoever's been watching over it twice now.

    Thank you, Nobbel. This was a very good and objective telling of events as they really happened, not as many like to pretend they happened. And you also helped to illustrate for me why the Kirin Tor felt it okay to help Theramore. Up to this point, I had considered the Kirin Tor huge hypocrites (I still do, for many other reasons), but this helped to alleviate it somewhat. I look forward to part two, and hope you can remain objective as we wade into the stuff that ruffles a lot more feathers. I also hope you can properly convey just how much Aethas loves the Kirin Tor, and not just say he betrayed them, because it's so much more complicated than just that. Great video, as always, and I can't wait to see more :)

    Indeed. This may be a bit off the topic, but remember our last conversation when I said Garithos is hardly mentioned in the game at all? I just remembered that the Fury of the Sunwell trailer shows Kael'thas entering Outland through the Dark Portal, which doesn't even make any sense because the Dark Portal was closed at the time. That means two things: Either Blizzard got lazy like with the other plot holes of the Burning Crusade, or they just swept Garithos under the rug in order to make the Kirin Tor more appealing like you said. I'm surprised the didn't retcon Garithos completely.

  • @Koryn_99

    @Koryn_99

    That was likely just symbolic of their exodus to Outland. Garithos is still very much canon.

  • @stormstrider1990

    I know Garithos is still canon. He is mentioned in the Felo'melorn artifact knowledge. It is also hinted Chillwind Camp in the Western Plaguelands was founded by deserters of Garithos' army. It has also been speculated some of his men joined the Scarlet Crusade. As for the trailer, now when you say it, it could have been mere symbolism, something you don't see in WoW cinematics that often.

    Yup. The Cata Zandalari patch had like a burst of fire from the bonfire come up and make Hakkar roaring or something, and that was probably more just foreshadowing than him actually appearing.

  • @stormstrider1990

    @stormstrider1990

    7 жыл бұрын

    True. Hakkar's physical form was destroyed at that point and his spirit was enslaved by Jin'do. The Zandalari and possibly Hakkar may return in the South Seas expansion, which will hopefully be the next one. Azhara and N'zoth will be the main villains, but the Zandalari would make a cool patch. The Dark Prophet Zul is still out there.

    I am very fond of the blood elves and elves in general. It is nice to know about more elf characters. Aethas Sunreaver is new to me. He looks a lot like the first blood elf character I played. That was a long time ago back in BC. I am horrified of the bombing of Theramore. It is disturbing that the blood elves played a part. It is not too surprizing since they are in the Horde. It is still shocking. Jaina has every right to be angry even to the point of being violent. One thing that I am very much in favor is a second strike policy. If Jaina attacks the Horde, the Horde had it coming. I think sending a tidal wave to Ogrimmar is pretty reasonable. Things are better if one balances between war and peace. There is a protection state. One wouldn't normally fight others. However war is good if it is done as a last resort. It can be done if all efforts of diplomacy failed. It can also be done by fighting back an invasion or attack. Either scenario works. The fighting back part is where a second strike policy comes in.

    I would like to see a video on Illysana Ravencrest. There is an achievement in Black Rook Hold for reading her journal entries. A lot of times, the group you are in is rushing the instance and will boot you if you are idle more than a few minutes, so you won't have time to really read them. But if you do read them, they are really interesting. When you first see her, she's a Demon Hunter in an old castle full of ghosts and the legion. Did the ghosts recruit her? Does she know they are ghosts? Is she aware that the burning legion is all around her? I am sure her story is very, very sad. But also very intriguing.

    Marquez Jean-Baptiste it's not pay to win at all since fans would be up in arms over that considering you already pay 15$ a month for it also you could technically buy stuff with money by first buying the gold for real money then getting the stuff but it's not hard to make gold it's stupidly easy there are people who haven't payed for wow since the tokens came out, also healers are always needed but don't care about what's needed right now that's always changing just find a class that's fun for you Edit: most of the best stuff in the game you have to raid for if it's current you can't buy your way to the top in this game and you can get flying and mounts with in game gold out of the hundreds of mounts you can get only like 5 or something you can only get with real money(may be able to get it in game idk) you really only need 1 flying mount the rest are just nice to have if you collect them

    I got a question Nobbel. Now that Anduin is not only the king of Stormwind but also the last of his line, do you think he will find a queen/wife in the near future? The kings of Stormwind isn't exactly known for dying of old age and If the royal line of Stormwind is lost it would be devastating on the morale of the alliance. I know we see Anduin as an old man in the end of the legion comic, but I suspect that is the result of magic similar to that which Medivh cast on Khadgar. The reason for this is because Anduin has been aging in real time since vanilla and I doubt blizzard is gonna wait 40 years before we get to Argus :P Who do you think could possibly be the next queen of Stormwind from the current set of characters in the lore? I suspect either Tess Greymane or Calia Menethil since they both are from royal families and both where recently reintroduced into the game in legion. Though Calia is a fair bit older than Anduin though (Anduin is in his early 20's while Calia is in her late 30's). But if blizzard REALLY wanted to push it I think Yrel actually might be a good match for him. Since out of all the female characters in wow she is the one with most things in common with him that I can think of.

    To all who start to debate here, I only ask that you please don't bias for your faction in the arguments, that you keep the hate away, and view the lore in a neutral eye. You must consider all the facts before saying anything. And I mean FACTS not just opinion. For example, Garrosh bombing Theramore is FACT nobody can say it was otherwise, while for example again, saying that the Horde betrayed the Alliance during the Broken Shore is merely a matter of opinion, there was no true betrayal.

    Define Bias? Because I get into this a lot. I consider the FOrsaken to be evil for what they did to Gilneas is that bias for me to say that they are evil after what they did there? I would hope not? I for one think both factions have done wrong doings, I just so happen to think the Horde has done more wrong doings than the Alliance, since I count the Old Horde of the first and second war as still a Horde.

  • @podtherod9304

    @podtherod9304

    Boybandhair the old Horde should not count as Horde now. You can not say the Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves, Goblins, Forsaken, and Pandaren of the Horde are evil because fel influenced orcs killed a bunch of humans. Alliance has also done some fucked up shit so I'd say they're even. Attempting to murder innocent Goblins while at sea for the sake of "no witnesses" was something I see as pretty evil. And the Theramore bombing was also evil, but so was the murdering of innocent Blood Elves by the Silver Covenant during the Purge of Dalaran. Both are even for fucked up shit they've done.

  • @RhadaGhast100

    @RhadaGhast100

    7 жыл бұрын

    Well, given how I did say that the Alliance has done some evil shit I agree with you, I just think the Horde has done more, and you right I can't judge the new Horde, but I can judge the Orcs. The Orcs killed thousands of men, women and children in the first and second war, if the rpg was still canon they also raped a lot of women also (In the rpg it said that at the time of the Orc camps 3% of Hillsbrads entire pop was Half-Breed orcs that were Half-Human) Purge of Dalaran was pretty messed up, killing normal people who did nothing wrong, enslaving the natives on panda land was pretty wrong but the Horde did that and worse also, whole thing in the barrens, Stoike Clan invading Alterac from the Frostwolves even though they peaceful. But really Horde has done a lot of bad shit thats even worse, I'm talking new Horde here. Forsaken invading the Homeland of the Humans, arathi Highlands, while the League of Arathor is trying to take back their homeland, Forsaken invading Gilneas, killing, Military and normal men and women and maybe even children, stripping the Gilneans of their home because Garrosh told them too, enslaving the Gilneans for hard Labor in the mines. At least they look like captured slaves to me. Bombing of Theramore, capturing living mothers to kill each other for their kids, Warsong clan invading Ashenvale for Lumber, (Granted Night elves are kind of pricks) I can go on but really I think you get the idea, I don't think it's bias for me to think the Horde has done more wrong doings. Alliance have done them to but to me...not as much.

    I still don't get it. How strong willed are those high elves? I mean, they were kicked out because L'T couldn't lead a divided nation. But they had to turn to demons so they would not die. What about the high elves? What magic source did they find? Don't tell me so many of them survived to crowd an entire section of Dalaran just based on pure force of will and meditation. Hell, in the start of BC I read that even blood elves had to meditate so they would not turn to wretched, and they had sources for magic.

    They siphoned magic off of artifacts and found other ways to coup in Alliance cities. Later on when Kael was killed, Lorthemar offered to help/welcome back the high elves to Quel'Thalas, but they refused because the Blood Elves were now Horde. When the Sunwell was restored, High Elves were allowed to come drink from the new well.

    The reason it was so detrimental to have their people divided was because they were trying to survive against the Scourge. Having a chunk of your people sitting around shivering on the ground due to mana withdrawals is not conducive to a productive society that can't afford to take the moral highground in the face of a zombie apocalypse. The blood elves in Quel'thalas siphoned mana from arcane mana worms and crystals and such that they found. Rommath and a few magisters were sent from Outland with M'uru, and some fel crystals which were used to power the city. This caused a radiation-like effect where the elves exposed to the fel got green eyes. But nobody in Quel'thalas, outside perhaps Rommath and a few magi, ever siphoned from demons. If they did siphon fel, it was from the crystals, and they didn't know it was fel. It says that most of the elves would have been horrified to learn the truth, and they were, when Kael'thas turned traitor to join the Legion. The only high elves to claim a high horse and act like siphoning mana at all is evil, are the Silver Covenant. They could easily afford to shiver on the ground and get over their addiction the "right" way. They were safe in Dalaran with humans and gnomes and dwarves unaffected by any addiction to protect them from the Scourge with their magic bubble shield. The elves who were banished to Quel'lithien had no qualms about siphoning mana, just not from living things (even vermin like mana worms that were created by the elves and were getting way overpopulated). They found artifacts, which turned out to be their doom when they were all cursed as Wretched by siphoning out of control.

He was better in Cata where he had a decent sense of honor and was great he had a trait that countered it, it was just shit that they made his character do a complete turn around, like if we had Cata Garrosh during MoP, he would have never done so many atrocities during the war unless Y'shaarj actually got to him like it did in SoO.

    Garithos and Dalaran is like Uther and Arthas - a completely fucked up power dynamic simply because the overarching story demands it. At this point it's hard to care about Warcraft lore. So many cool characters destroyed and every other conflict has to be resolved with a 'heroic sacrifice'.

    Except Stratholme was already doomed, and allowing it to fester into a powerful stronghold for the Scourge would have meant all the Eastweald (the Eastern Plaguelands today) would have likely fallen much sooner. Hindsight is 20/20, but at the time, Arthas did the only thing he thought he could. Garithos was prejudiced against elves because his family's estate that was near Quel'thalas was destroyed by the Horde, along with his family, and he blamed the elves, angry that the Alliance's forces were fighting in Quel'thalas to protect the elves at the time, thinking humanity should only look after itself. Because of this prejudice, Garithos mistreated the blood elves, either giving them tasks beneath their capabilities as warriors, or setting them against an insurmountable one that might have still bought Dalaran the time it needed, but would sacrifice the elves in the process. Garithos recalled all human and dwarven troops, even laborers, leaving only elves to fight the threat. Kael'thas was unwilling to just die when there was another way when Vashj offered them assistance. Garithos sentenced them all to death after he caught them getting help a second time. Kael'thas begged that Garithos spare his men, since it was his decision to accept the naga's aid. Garithos proved that he didn't care about them as allies, and in his blind racism, threw them all in the Violet Hold to be executed the next morning. Modera and Ansirem, implied by Rommath to have been in Dalaran in some position of power at the time, did nothing to save their fellow member of the Council of Six, effectively pissing away over 2,000 years of close friendship with the most reclusive people the humans had ever known. Kael'thas had to endure condescending words from Jailor Kassan who served the Kirin Tor, saying "It pains me to see a good wizard turned bad," so everyone just believed Garithos without a second thought. Nobody thought "maybe these people we've been friends with for over 2,000 years aren't just traitors?" And they all left them to die. The two were completely different situations. Stratholme was necessary. It wasn't pretty, and nobody was glad to have to do it. Garithos in Dalaran was unnecessary, and was only done to feed one man's massive ego out of prejudice against a people he perceived as having wronged him, completely ignoring the fact that they needed everyone they could get to fight the Scourge.

    CrackAlecIn The purge itself wasn't a problem. The whole scene before Uther leaving was just pure emotion without an ounce of sense. All Uther had to do is just make Arthas wait several hours and see the first undead for himself. After that, Mal'Ganis would've been easily pwned by Uther 'The Fucking' Lightbringer with a full detachment of knights. And with the moral support of Uther and Jaina, Arthas wouldn't have rushed off to Northend, no Frostmourne etc. Although maybe we would've had a cool dwarven Lich King :) That's what I mean about the power dynamic. When you have probably the greatest and most respected hero of Lordaeron on one side and a young Prince throwing tantrums and talking about a civilian massacre on the other, it's an easy guess who the men would've sided with if Uther had pressed the issue instead of running off to Terenas. I mean, most of the knights *did* ride off with Uther! And about Garithos - the only thing I don't understand is what possible authority could he have had in Dalaran? Even before the war, as I understand it, they were only nominally part of the kingdom. In all matters of importance the Council of Six ruled the city and not the king of Lordaeron. The only possible explanation I can think of is that the Council were in such a disarray, they didn't even know what happened on the outskirts of the city and in the Violet hold.

    When did the Horde attack the Alliance while they fought the Scourge again? If you're talking about the Wrath Gate, you're clearly ignoring what really happened there. The Horde was betrayed by Putress, a Forsaken Apothecary and Varimathras a Dreadlord that Sylvanas had, or we believed at least, bent to her will. Then both Horde and Alliance charged into the occupied Undercity and killed Putress and Varimathras. Aside from that, the only other possible conflict between the two factions is the ship fight boss in ICC, but sincerely, none stabbed anyone in the back there, both Alliance and Horde saw eachother climbing to the top of the Citadel and decided to go to blows. There was no stabbing in the back during Wrath by either faction.

    Exactly. I hate Aethas so much, not just because he loves Dalaran so much more than Quel'thalas, but because Blizzard seems incapable of developing more than one Blood Elf at a time (not so for humans, funnily enough), and the blood elf they choose is Aethas, who keeps the blood elf narrative completely dependent on humans, making blood elves seem weak and helpless without the Kirin Tor, when it used to be the other way around, only both groups were much closer in competency.

    James Bonacorsi I can justify hating Jaina by the evil shit she's done. camp Taurajo and murdering innocent Blood Elves during the purge of Dalaran. Both factions have done extremely fucked shit. Horde has done more I'd say just because of the Forsaken alone. Even though the Forsaken are pretty morally fucked, I still don't think it's justifiable for Greymane to attack the Horde and start slaughtering Forsaken just because he is mad hyped up on revenge because his son was killed in Cata. Another example of Alliance being shitheads was when they attempted to murder the Goblins during their starting zone for the sake of "no witnesses" I can't defend the Horde for the bombing of Theramore and other shit that the Forsaken have done, but neither should you defend Alliance for evil things they've done.

And Jaina only harmed those who attempted to fight her during the purge, so she really doesn't have a lot of blood on her hands. But I do agree, that both side have done some screwed up things, but I still feel like the Horde is a lot more aggressive and the Alliance has suffered a lot more because of it.

    I'm glad Nobbel is more objective than you. Garithos was not acting alone. His troops were complicit. The Kirin Tor did nothing to oppose him. They stood by and let their allies die. The elves were hardly ever friends with the Alliance as a whole. They were only actual friends with Dalaran. The three Sunreaver traitors we know of over the years, however, were not representative of their fellows. Aethas condemns them, and loves Dalaran, as do the rest of the Sunreavers. You say "they" too much. By that logic, I could say, speaking of the Kirin Tor "they formed the Cult of the Damned and plagued Lordaeron (Kel'thuzad), they summoned the Worgen from the Emerald Dream (Arugal), summoned Archimonde into Dalaran (Kel'thuzad again), and summoned Kil'jaeden at the Sunwell (Kael'thas)." But of course, I would never say that, because that would be intellectually dishonest. I know those are black sheep whose actions are not condoned by most of the Kirin Tor.

    I agree with Kenji, they left the Alliance over a group of racists and besides the men under Garithos...what could they have done? The ones that disagreed. In the Military you follow orders without question and in times like these? If you question orders that could fall under fucking treason. So no one can really question Garithos orders purely because hes a Lord and has a claim to the Throne of Lordaeron by default since hes apart of the Peerage Lordaeron had. Also, High elves are racist as shit it's not like they can complain about Humans being racist towards elves when they are just as racist towards Humans and other races. In my mind, in my views the BLood elves are kind of hypocrites. THats not to say I defend Garthios's actions, I think the man is a hero but he has done wrong doings like any other Human being.

  • @Koryn_99

    @Koryn_99

    Taking the strongest of your people to leave your own war-torn country to go help the humans retake theirs first is so racist of them. High/Blood Elves don't send their allies on suicide missions, hoping they'll die. Just saying they're racist too is no argument. I don't know how that peerage stuff works so please enlighten me if you do. Garithos was the son and heir of a baron (though all their property was burned to the ground in the Second War), but does that mean he has a claim to the throne (apart from right of might, as the most powerful warlord in the area, and being a remnant from Lordaeron's former government)? During the Third War, The Alliance consisted of Lordaeron's remnants under Garithos, Dalaran hosting them in the damaged city, Kael'thas and the Blood Elves when he brought them back in after his father severed ties, Kul Tiras (though not present), Ironforge who sent aid to Garithos (because they could see he was pretty much all Lordaeron had left, excluding the Silver Hand who weren't present in the story at that time), and Stormwind who were way south rebuilding their kingdom. Kael'thas had no one else to turn to. All those he would have assumed would vouch for him let them all down and turned their backs on them, leaving them to die. Stromgarde and Gilneas left the Alliance between the 2nd and 3rd Wars, and Alterac was defunct. Garithos was the Alliance at that point, as far as it mattered to anybody in Lordaeron. BUT, the blood elves actually recognized that Garithos' actions were not representative of the sentiments of Ironforge and Stormwind, and in Burning Crusade, the Blood Elves actually tried to join today's Alliance, knowing that it was not the same people as the one that betrayed them in Dalaran. But the Alliance pretended to be interested in helping them, when really, they were only spying on them, with Night Elves occupying key positions of the Ghostlands, killing any Blood Elves who discovered them. That's why the Blood Elves gave up on today's Alliance. Not out of racism, but because the Alliance deceived them and purposely hindered their efforts in their own country.

  • @RhadaGhast100

    @RhadaGhast100

    Okay, Yeah I can help you with the Peerage, I don't know that much either so I could be wrong. House Menethil at the time of Garithos's campaign was all pretty much dead, Arthas was known as a Race traitor, His Sister is thought to be dead and the mother and father are dead also. So that means Lordaeron's throne is open. Noblemen swear oaths of fealty to the King and with no King...that means any Noblemen can claim the throne because they are apart of a Peerage. Since the peerage of england seems to be the one that Blizzard semi uses with all the different type of noblemen I will be going from Highest to lowest in a list I will also not be mentioning titles that are not seen in game so things like Archduke won't be used King/Queen Crown Prince/Princess Duke/Duchess Marquess (Not in-game or in lore, but given how they are pretty much Border lords, I think they may be in Warcraft but not sure) Count/Countess Viscount/Viscountess (Not in lore, but the Son or Daughter of a Count/Countess is known as Viscount/Viscountess) Baron/Baroness So Garithos has a claim purely due to Noble Blood, not sure how many Noblemen lived through Lordaeron, but thats just my knowledge of the Peerage. Also I agree, Humans can be dick heads but Blood elves to me is just as much of dickheads. Also I'm pretty sure Stormwind was apart of the Alliance also? However due to it being a medieval setting word does not spread that quickly and Stormwind would pretty much be unable to send help (Not sure if they knew till it was to late) Also I was not aware that the Blood elves in Outland tried to rejoin the Alliance, i knew they tried to rejoin the Alliance in mop after they have served in the Horde Military but...yeah.

    After the Second War, Anasterian and the denizens of Quel'thalas blamed the Alliance for its poor leadership and left. Yes, it was a douche thing to do as it started the domino effect for Gilneas and Stromgarde to leave as well. But once Arthas arrives and decimates 90% of their people, they become desperate to survive. 90% of the survivors then became blood elves, the remaining 10% still high elves. Kael leads his most able-bodied soldiers to fight in the New Alliance and become victims of Garithos' poor treatment and racism, and is often sent out on suicide missions. After getting help from Vashj and the Naga, help they so desperately needed for their mission, Garithos sentences them to death. After receiving help from them again, they flee to Outland to follow Illidan and find a way to satisfy their addiction made manifest after the fall of Quel'thalas. With Kael away and the Alliance more or less gone or unhelpful at this time, Lor'themar has to have his people hoin the Horde in order for their people still on Azeroth to survive. Kael betrays his own people so Lor'themar becomes the sole ruler of their people, and thus has to consider every option for his race's survival. Keep in mind that the entire population of the blood elves are the 9% of survivors of Quel'thalas' destruction at the hands of Arthas, so Lor'themar's task as leader is a VERY difficult task. Flash forward a few years; war has begun again; the Alliance and Horde are at each other's throats. Garrosh has become power hungry and mad, and has begun desecrating every land in his mad conquest for control. The blood elves, obviously still recovering from their near extinction, are used as tools and grunts for Garrosh's desire of power. Jaina, as leader of Dalaran and the Kirin Tor, has still chosen to let the Horde and Sunreavers operate in her city and keep it this way. Meanwhile, Lor'themar, seeing Garrosh heading down the same road as Kael'thas once did, asks Varian for a place among the Alliance for his people in order to survive the war. Garrosh, however, has a double agent which fucks up negotiations and makes the Sunreavers victims/suspects. Jaina, pissed off and not thinking clearly, goes around the streets of Dalaran, imprisoning any Sunreaver she came across and killing any that resisted without even letting them know why or what's happening, even killing dragonhawks to prevent escape. Alliance players are even sent to kill a blacksmith in her store and a mage at the bank trying to withdraw his savings before being struck down. Innocent lives imprisoned or eitherwise killed, with only a few (With luckily Aethas himself) free because of Rommath's intervention. After the Purge of Dalaran, Sunreaver corpses are on the streets and in their own homes. Some of them were even in imprisoned int he Violet Hold for the rest of the war and even still there. Again, blood elves are the remaining 9% of Quel'thalas original population, so Jaina's act was quite a blow to the blood elves. As a result of the Purge, the blood elves have forced their hand under the Horde banner to fight the Alliance, or specifically Jaina's "justice" at the Isle of Thunder. So tell me again why blood elves are the bad ones in this matter, considering their own circumstances.
