Back in 1998 US based singer / songwriter Duane Harden and DJ / producer Armand van Helden teamed up for a track, which they called “You Don’t Know Me”. The track became a massive hit and is now considered one of the most popular vocal house classics of the 1990’s. In the USA “You Don’t Know Me” peaked at the #2 spot of the US Billboard Hot Dance Music chart. And in the UK, where the track came out on January 25, 1999, it even reached the #1 position in the UK Singles Chart!
During the Amsterdam Dance Event in October 2019, I sat down with Duane Harden, to talk with him about the story behind “You Don’t Know Me” and more. You will get to hear how he and Armand van Helden met, how long it took him to write the lyrics of the song, his future plans and more!
Enjoy and thanks for watching!

Do you remember hearing "You Don't Know Me" for the very first time?

it was one of its kind, sticking in your head all day, the cherry on a good night out at the club

Yes, in a local club which played house and trance, in 1999, sadly now it's pizzeria :D. DJs were great and You Don't Know Me was sort of our anthem back then, everyone of us youngsters could relate!

Yeap. My local nightclub at the time, Icon, Norwich, UK, around late 1998. When the tune dropped, the club went mental. Sadly, Icon closed in the early 2000.

Yes I do, first time I went into a Club was in January 99, it was played in the warm up, I had no idea what it was but it blew me away
This song is legendary and timeless. I loved it back in 1999 and still love it.
Armand Van Helden's best song and one of the best songs ever made regardless of genre
3:51 a track that was written in 15 mins, decades later and every word in this song still.relates to my life.
This was the song aged 15 that got me hooked on dance music and it still is so fresh. Incredible house record.

What a track right? Still amazing to hear it these days :)
It’s still one of the most meaningful songs of my life! Everything just hits home every time I listen to it! Instrumentally and the lyrically! just the perfect match!
#1 MOS Bangkok tune.
This AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME TRACK ... came out at a time in my life when things were really really crazy, i was almost homeless and SCARED. Never been homeless before but i kept praying ... The rest is history, all worked out.

Amazing tune. I remember buying it on the Saturday before it charted, in Jan ‘99. Nothing like that feeling of playing a new tune, which you couldn’t play before the release date, and only heard it on the radio.
Duane has such an infectious smile :)
Duane seems like a really nice guy! Absolute classic track and very informative video as ever!

I would love that, so I hope he is up for it once he's back in The Netherlands. Unfortunately he is not having any (confirmed) gigs in The Netherlands at the moment. But hopefully somewhere in the near future. Fingers crossed!

Awesome masterpiece. And the interview too...so, I will try to write a song in 15 minutes, but Duane took the better words to explain our deep soul, when we think nobody can understand us...from Barcelona (In a music shop near plaza catalunya where i listened these words for the first time) to Padoa, I have been falling in love vith this song since 1999. Well done!

Yes, when we were about to do its dance choreography in a studio because it was being launched on national television, MCA Universal Philippines gave us this music piece as we are their house dancers. I was 19 years old, it was 24 years back then, but it's one of the nostalgic tracks. Peace
Duane you are Amazing , your Soulful Vocals have got me through some tough times in my life , thank you for sharing that backstory . I am sorry to hear about the loss of your brother , i am sure he would have been so proud of you. 👍

Thank You very much for this information as a dancer this was one of the greatest. We promoted this music here in Manila under MCA Universal Philippines in early year 2000 included in the BIG 2 Dance Album.

Fantastic person 😀
What a sweetheart of a man Duane is....and yes lived that "house/techno" vibe in Boston during the same time...like up and down Landsdowne St (gay night @ Avalon (Sunday night), AXIS Monday night and that other club that was small and shut down fast................Duane DELUSIONAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...only because he thought and still thinks Armand made him......Duane you were the man then and still......Armand just another high end DJ without you......with his biggest claim to fame being the Ali G model....
beautiful story about the song

seeyouintheeighties Thank you so much! And I can only interview people that live close to me or people that visit The Netherlands, since I don’t have a travel budget for these vlogs. But there’s a lot of people that I have confirmed already for the next few weeks, so there will be plenty of new interviews at least until the end of March 😉 Stay tuned!
Tony Humphries played this like it was the most important track in his crates.

Does Armand still make or made bangers like these?
You MISSED IT ... if you weren't going out to NYC/NJ nightclubs when this was first out, the DJ would turn it down at certain parts and a crowd of 2,000 or better would be signing : YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW ME ... wow, you missed it!!!

Oh sorry AVH but such a ripoff, you don't get same approach to that specific sample yourself, he basically sampled a sample which makes it bit too much
